PETALING JAYA: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong has used his Merdeka Day message to urge Malaysians to put aside their differences to battle the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah noted that irresponsible parties who flout SOPs and rules will hurt communities and potentially derail the national recovery plan.

He advised the rakyat, leaders and the government to reject differences of opinion and set aside political disputes to “fight and gain independence from the pandemic”, according to a statement issued by the Comptroller of the Royal Household, Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin.

“In line with the theme of this year’s Merdeka Day celebration which is Malaysia Prihatin, His Majesty calls on the government to continue formulating and arranging action plans to help the affected rakyat and restore a healthy economic climate.

“The rakyat should continue to be protected in order to stand agile in the face of the negative impact of this crisis,” the statement said.
