PETALING JAYA: The total development cost of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project is RM74.96 billion, says the transport ministry.

This amount involves the total construction cost of RM50.27 billion and other development costs which come up to RM24.69 billion, it said in a statement.

The other development costs include interest during construction, land acquisition, transfer of utilities and connection charges as well as operating expenses.

It maintained that the RM74.96 billion total cost was lower than the original cost of RM85.97 billion when the project was first launched in 2017.

‘Let me undertake the ECRL project for half the price’

I would like to urge transport minister, Loke Siew Fook, to be fully transparent about the cost elements that make up the East Coast Rail Link’s (ECRL) mammoth RM75 billion price tag.

This new figure eclipses all the previous figures quoted by former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamed and Loke himself (when they were in the previous PH government) and Wee Ka Siong, who took over from Loke in March 2020.

Even after Wee amended the route by swapping the south alignment for a more northern route, the cost quoted was only RM55 billion.

The total development cost of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project is RM74.96 billion, which includes RM50.27 billion for construction and RM24.69 billion for other development costs. This reduction from the initial RM85.97 billion highlights effective cost management, similar to what can be achieved through thorough commercial estimating services. Understanding these costs helps stakeholders make informed decisions throughout the project's lifecycle.
