Hamzah ‘purposely delayed’ Pejuang registration, court told
Posted by: superadmin - 05-31-2021, 05:26 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR: The legal team for Dr Mahathir Mohamad-led Pejuang told the High Court here that home minister Hamzah Zainudin “purposely delayed” his decision on the party’s registration so that it would not be able to contest in the election.

Lawyers Rafique Rashid Ali and Mior Nor Haidir Suhaimi argued that it is not an uphill task for the minister to decide on Pejuang’s appeal on the registration.

They said that after the Registrar of Societies (RoS) rejected Pejuang’s application to register the party on Jan 6, Pejuang had immediately lodged its appeal to Hamzah, as required under Section 18 of Societies Act.

“After 116 days, there was still no reply from him. Such a matter (Pejuang’s appeal) can be easily decided within seven days.

Minister interfered in MRB land deal, says former chairman
Posted by: superadmin - 05-31-2021, 05:24 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Days after the Malaysian Rubber Board (MRB) denied claims of a “land scandal”, plantation industries and commodities minister Khairuddin Aman Razali has again been accused of interfering with the board’s handling of two parcels of land it owns.

Former MRB chairman Ahmad Nazlan Idris has said that the minister did get involved in the matter. Ahmad Nazlan denied that he had any connection to the scandal, saying his contract had been terminated by then.

There have been allegations that Khairuddin approved the lease of two plots of land at Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur owned by the MRB, below the market rate. The minister has since lodged a police report over these allegations.

Ahmad Nazlan, who is also Jerantut MP, maintained that the MRB’s board of directors viewed this issue seriously and had formed three task forces while taking steps to improve the running of LGM Properties Corporation (LGMPC), a corporation owned by MRB.

“However, the minister interfered and allowed LGMPC to run as usual,” the Umno MP claimed in a statement today.

At least 22 people shot, 2 fatally, after assailants get out of an SUV and fire assault rifles at a club, police say

[Image: 210530112523-09-hialeah-florida-shooting...ge-169.jpg]

(CNN)Police are asking for the public's help in finding whoever opened fire at a Florida club early Sunday, killing at least two people and wounding at least 20 more, Miami-Dade Police Department Director Alfredo Ramirez III said.

Shortly after midnight, a white Nissan Pathfinder pulled up to the El Mula Banquet Hall near Hialeah and three people "stepped out of the vehicle with assault rifles and handguns and started firing indiscriminately into the crowd," Ramirez said.

A Miami-Dade officer covers a body outside a club that was rented out for a concert.
"The result is 20 to 25 victims with gunshot injury wounds, and two deceased on the scene," he said.

Five victims were taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Florida. Two of them are in critical condition, according to hospital spokesperson Kerting Baldwin.

As Covid cases surge, another call for a unity government
Posted by: superadmin - 05-31-2021, 10:37 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: A social scientist formerly with the World Bank has reiterated his call for a unity government to be formed even as the nation prepares itself for a full lockdown after a surge in Covid-19 cases.

Lim Teck Ghee, who made a similar call last year, said a unity government is “achievable” and is urgently needed to deal with Malaysia’s many crises.

It could also prove to be an antidote to the current political polarisation, he said. “It can help correct the country’s current political divide,” he told FMT when asked if a unity government was possible in the current political environment.

“A unity government can’t do any worse than our present government,” he said.

Dream of an independent bloc gains ground despite the odds
Posted by: superadmin - 05-31-2021, 10:31 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Partyless politicians, activists, and prominent national figures could well shape the country’s future direction if an unlikely plan involving independent candidates in the next general election takes off.

However, political observers have doubts whether it will come to pass.

The plan for an independent bloc was cobbled together by a group of prominent people who feel the way forward would lie in like-minded independent MPs forming the majority in the Dewan Rakyat, leading to a government “of the people and for the people” rather than a party-controlled executive prone to patronage politics.

“The idea is gaining speed among certain circles, more so since there is this notion that people are sick of politicians and that results of the next elections could be favourable to independents since the ‘big three’ are likely to clash,” said one political observer in the know.

Veterans group questions cancellation of double-tracking contract
Posted by: superadmin - 05-31-2021, 10:21 AM - Forum: Local News - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Is the government willing to bear full responsibility for any rail accidents that might arise because of the delay in completion of the Klang Valley Double Tracking Phase 2 contract, a veterans group said today.

Retired brigadier-general Mohamed Arshad Raji, president of the National Patriots Association, posed the questions following a warning by the railway workers union over the project, which has been held up in a contract dispute.

Arshad questioned why the government had cancelled the contract awarded to Dhaya Maju-Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera (Dhaya Maju-LTAT), and asked if the contractor had failed in their work.

“If work was progressing normally, why terminate the contract and award it to some other contractor? If escalating cost is the problem, why couldn’t a cost review be undertaken, rather than terminating the contract?” he said.

MCO violations: How Neelofa and husband Haris kept drawing police attention
Posted by: superadmin - 05-31-2021, 08:06 AM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: neelofa_pu_riz_seremban_court2_2005.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR, May 31 — Celebrity entrepreneur Noor Neelofa Mohd Noor and her Islamic televangelist husband, Haris Ismail, have repeatedly come under police investigation after their alleged violations of the movement control order (MCO) made headlines.

Amid growing public criticism against preferential treatment for VIPs, Malaysians with internet access have been quick to point out the alleged breaches. One keyboard warrior even started an online petition to demand that Neelofa and her husband, better known as PU Riz, be punished with jail time for their repeated violations.

Here is a list of the couple’s violations — admitted and alleged — so far.

On March 27, Neelofa married PU Riz at the Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur, with some 200 guests reportedly attending the hotel event.

Videos and images depicting the attendees failing to maintain the required one-metre physical distance and sitting shoulder-to-shoulder were later circulated on social media.

The wedding was also attended by Islamic Affairs Minister Datuk Zulkifli Mohamad who has refused to comment on the alleged breaches at the event.

A day after the wedding, Dang Wangi police chief Mohamad Zainal said the police have started investigations under Section 21A of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act.

A month later, Neelofa was fined RM20,000. Twenty of her family members were also fined RM1,500 each, resulting in RM30,000 collectively for ignoring the minimum physical distance during the ceremony to prevent spreading Covid-19.

How control of the economy corrupted Umno
Posted by: superadmin - 05-30-2021, 08:35 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: rosli-khan-column-300x400-210819-NEW.jpg]

After the formation of Barisan Nasional in 1973,  prime minister Abdul Razak Hussein appointed Hussein Onn as the new finance minister in 1974, taking over from MCA leader Tan Siew Sin, who had occupied the post since 1959. For the first time since independence, Umno controlled the country’s purse.

When Hussein became PM, after the death of  Razak, he brought in Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, then chief executive of Petronas, to be the new finance minister in 1976.

Hussein Onn had a strategy. In exchange, he appointed MCA leader, Lee San Choon, as the new transport minister on Nov 1, 1979.

Since then, the transport portfolio has remained with an MCA leader, except when Pakatan Harapan won GE14 and the post went to Loke Siew Fook of DAP.

Transport to riches
The continued dominance of MCA in the country’s business and financial matters has been well documented. As the Chinese controlled almost all the commercial activities in the country, MCA frequently set the agenda and influenced public policy on commerce and industry.

The Umno-led government was simply the political administrator. They had no choice but to “kow-tow” to the “towkays” in MCA, the centrifugal force built around the leader who also controlled the transport ministry.

Govt makes U-turn on vaccine choice
Posted by: superadmin - 05-30-2021, 05:22 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The government has decided against allowing people to choose their vaccine, National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme coordinating minister Khairy Jamaluddin said today.

On Thursday, Khairy said Putrajaya was looking at adding a feature to the MySejahtera app to allow the public to have the vaccine of their choice.

“We thought about (allowing people to have a choice) initially, but now the concern is to increase and ramp up the (vaccination) numbers. So, we will just give whatever we have,” he said.

“If we give them an option, maybe that will slow things down,” he said at a press conference after visiting the vaccination centre at the Malaysia International Digital Entrepreneurs Centre (Mitec) in Kuala Lumpur.

The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) had earlier supported the idea of having people choose their vaccine, telling FMT that it would be better in case those who are hesitant decide against getting vaccinated at all.

“Giving people the chance to select their vaccines would instil greater confidence in Malaysians that they are receiving an effective vaccine and not one of the dregs,” it said.

Currently, there are three vaccines available to Malaysians, from Pfizer-BioNTech, Sinovac and AstraZeneca.

While AstraZeneca was earlier taken out of the national programme and only open to voluntary sign-ups, this decision has since been reversed due to the high demand seen once applications opened up in a number of states.

Apple’s massive success with CarPlay paves the way for automotive ambitions
Posted by: superadmin - 05-30-2021, 12:00 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

  • Apple introduced CarPlay in 2014 as a way to integrate the iPhone and a car’s dashboard.
  • In the United States, over 80% of new cars sold support it, Apple said last year.
  • Apple’s success with CarPlay explains the automotive industry’s interest in rumors that Apple plans to build its own car.

[Image: 106890059-1622220111077-gettyimages-6927...=740&h=416]

In the early 2010s, automotive manufacturers and their suppliers were excited about building sophisticated apps for car dashboards that went beyond a CD player and a tiny LED screen.

Partnering with companies like Microsoft, car makers started to come up with services for maps, music, and on-road assistance, often bundled into an upgrade package. They entered into large consortiums to create industry standards to connect smartphones to cars.

Then Apple came in and changed everything.
