Trump’s grip on GOP sparks fears about democratic process
Posted by: superadmin - 06-04-2021, 09:50 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

Seven months after Election Day, former President Donald Trump’s supporters are still auditing ballots in Arizona’s largest county and may revive legislation that would make it easier for judges in Texas to overturn election results.

In Georgia, meanwhile, the Republican-controlled state legislature passed a bill allowing it to appoint a board that can replace election officials. Trump loyalists who falsely insist he won the 2020 election are running for top election offices in several swing states. And after a pro-Trump mob staged a violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol to halt the certification of Democrat Joe Biden’s election victory, Republicans banded together to block an independent investigation of the riot, shielding Trump from additional scrutiny of one of the darkest days of his administration.

To democracy advocates, Democrats and others, the persistence of the GOP’s election denial shows how the Republican Party is increasingly open to bucking democratic norms, particularly the bipartisan respect traditionally afforded to election results even after a bitter campaign. That’s raising the prospect that if the GOP gains power in next year’s midterms, the party may take the extraordinary step of refusing to certify future elections.

  Donald Trump is getting worse
Posted by: superadmin - 06-04-2021, 09:19 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

The evidence is everywhere.

CNN's Dana Bash reported Thursday morning that former President Donald Trump is "more obsessed than ever with the 2020 election," with one former Trump aide telling her that the former President is only listening to "the bottom of the bottom of the crazies in the barrel."

That follows on reporting from The New York Times and The Washington Post that Trump is convinced that he will, at some point this summer, be reinstated as president once a variety of kooky and non-credible audits come to, uh, fruition.

"Trump has become so fixated on the audits that he suggested recently to allies that their success could result in his return to the White House this year, according to people familiar with comments he has made," wrote the Post.

Trump himself has been sending out a slew of statements on the topic -- blasting Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey and Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich, both Republicans, for not doing more to support the ridiculous recount in Maricopa County. And on Monday, Trump blasted this out: "Great work is being done in Georgia revealing the Election Fraud of the 2020 Presidential Election. But, we must not allow ANYONE to compromise these ballots by leaving the building unsecured, which was done late Friday. Republicans and Patriots must protect this site and the Absentee Ballots." (For more on the situation with Georgia's absentee ballots, read this.)

GUANGZHOU, China — China has given its approval to Ant Group to operate a consumer finance company, a key positive step in the forced restructuring of its business just months after regulators slammed the breaks on its record-breaking listing.

Ant will hold a 50% stake in the new entity and contribute 4 billion Chinese yuan ($625.93 million) in registered capital, the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission said on Thursday.

Another six shareholders will contribute 4 billion yuan and hold the remaining 50%. The company will be registered in the southwestern city of Chongqing with a total registered capital of 8 billion yuan.

The business will be able to give out personal loans and issue bonds among other things. The consumer finance company will also house Ant’s credit businesses Huabei and Jiebei. These are critical for the company and previously big drivers of revenue.

Ex-Petronas boss ousted from ExxonMobil board – after 3 months
Posted by: superadmin - 06-03-2021, 05:31 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin, the former chief executive officer of national oil company Petronas, will be removed from ExxonMobil’s board after being rejected by voters.

The ouster comes just three months after his appointment in February this year, which made him the first non-American member of the board.
According to industry newsletter Energy Voice, Wan Zulkiflee’s exit came after ExxonMobil activist investor Engine No. 1 expanded its presence on the US oil giant’s board to three seats, according to preliminary vote tallies.

Meanwhile, a source with knowledge on the matter said Wan Zulkiflee was among three directors who were considered as not being a right fit for the board.

Have a heart, says MP over fines for delivery riders
Posted by: superadmin - 06-03-2021, 05:23 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - Replies (7)

PETALING JAYA: Enforcement authorities must exercise discretion and be compassionate when issuing compounds to e-hailing workers, Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh said.

In a statement today, she said six e-hailing delivery riders had complained that they were compounded at two different locations while eating at an open field by the side of the road.

She said their compounds stated that they had to go to the district health office to pay the amount.

“I appeal to enforcement officers to exercise discretion, and understand the reality out there. Their (delivery riders’) income is not enough to pay compounds,” she said.

  Glamping Business
Posted by: onikka - 06-03-2021, 02:50 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (14)

Hi everyone, my partner and I have been brainstorming ideas for a business as we have some money to invest and want to use it to go self employed.
Today we discussed setting up a glamping business, as we have potentially got some land we could use in the countryside.
We’re thinking wooden huts with beds, electricity supply for kettle, heater. Water supply and maybe hot tubs.

The question is, how much would we be looking at spending on getting the water and electricity supply set up?
And would we need to build a toilet block for guests too, or would it be cheaper to install toilets into the huts?

It’s a very vague idea at the moment and we have a lot of research to do, but thought we’d ask here to see if anyone had any experience with this kind of business.

Thank you
