High Court quashes govt’s 1986 ban on ‘Allah’ use by Christians, affirms Sarawakian Bumiputera’s right to religion and non-discrimination
KUALA LUMPUR, March 10 ― The High Court today ruled that the Malaysian government's directive issued in 1986 with a total ban on the use of the word “Allah” in Christian publications is unconstitutional and invalid, and also declared orders to affirm Sarawakian Bumiputera Christian Jill Ireland Lawrence Bill's right to not be discriminated against and practise her faith.
Justice Datuk Nor Bee Ariffin, who has since been elevated to be a Court of Appeal judge, granted three of the specific constitutional reliefs sought by the Sarawakian native of the Melanau tribe.
The three orders granted by the judge include a declaration that it is Jill Ireland's constitutional right under the Federal Constitution's Article 3, 8, 11 and 12 to import the publications in exercise of her rights to practise religion and right to education.
The other two declarations granted by the judge today are that a declaration under Article 8 that Jill Ireland is guaranteed equality of all persons before the law and is protected from discrimination against citizens on the grounds of religion in the administration of the law ― specifically the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984 and Customs Act 1967), and a declaration that government directive issued by the Home Ministry's publication control's division via a circular dated December 5, 1986 is unlawful and unconstitutional.

MIC, MCA gunning for Tok Mat to lead Umno? |

PETALING JAYA: Najib Razak has been convicted and Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is facing numerous charges, so who will be the man to lead the Barisan Nasional campaign in the next general election? If the pundits are right, Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan could be the pointman for the coalition.
Speculation is rife that the coalition members have drawn up Plan B, which involves replacing Umno president Zahid with Mohamad, better known as Tok Mat.
“Members from MIC and MCA are suggesting that Tok Mat be the next choice as part of Plan B. There are some concerns over the court charges,” a source told FMT.
The source said there are fears that Zahid may be bogged down by the court cases, which are ongoing even during the emergency.

Probe PM over alleged offer of post to Tebrau MP, Lim tells MACC |

PETALING JAYA: Lim Guan Eng has challenged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to probe Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin for allegedly offering Tebrau MP Steven Choong an official position in return for supporting the Perikatan Nasional government.
The DAP secretary-general questioned if the anti-graft agency would “demonstrate its independence” by probing Muhyiddin, adding that MACC should at least state that party-hopping in exchange for favours was a corrupt practice.
He said Choong’s revelation was reminiscent of an audio recording released last year purportedly of Muhyiddin offering government posts and positions in exchange for support.
“Umno’s Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah also revealed that he rejected an offer by the prime minister to be Petronas’ chairman because it was unconstitutional.

Google pays tribute to Malaysian epidemiologist Dr Wu, inventor of the surgical mask |

KUALA LUMPUR, March 10 — Google Doodle today honoured the late Malaysian-Chinese epidemiologist Dr Wu Lien-teh, who invented the surgical face mask, on his 142nd birthday today.
Dr Wu, who was born to Chinese immigrant parents in Penang in 1879 on this day, went on to become the first student of ethnic Chinese descent to earn his medical degree from Cambridge University.
Dr Wu, a staunch advocate of medical advancement, is also Malaysia’s first Nobel Prize nominee in 1935.
He was at that time nominated for the prestigious award in Physiology or Medicine for his work to control the pneumonic plague.
This was after Dr Wu’s work in China, following his appointment to investigate an unknown epidemic at that time, which had affected north-western China. He later identified the disease to be a highly contagious pneumonic plague which had human to human respiratory transmission.
This discovery led Dr Wu to design and produce a special surgical mask with cotton and gauze, adding several layers of cloth to filter inhalations.
He had also advised people to wear his new invention and worked with government officials to establish quarantine stations and hospitals, restrict travel and apply progressive sterilisation techniques. Dr Wu’s work helped to end the pandemic, known as the Manchurian plague, by April 1911, merely four months after taking the task to address the outbreak.
Google also shared thoughts from Dr Wu’s great-granddaughter, Dr Shan Woo Liu, on the Doodle homage.
“We are honoured that Google is celebrating our great-grandfather’s birthday. Just over a century ago, he helped fight off a plague in China and developed techniques such as mask-wearing, that we still use today in our battle against Covid-19.

A Chinese school where Malay pupils outnumber others |

KUALA KANGSAR: Politicians often use vernacular schools as a lightning rod to win support from their ethnic community, even at the expense of sowing racial discord.
However, in a remote town in north Perak, many Malay parents thumb their noses at such sentiments by having their children educated at SJK © Khai Chee, about 12km from here.
The school, with an enrolment of 42 pupils from Year 1 to Year 6, could be an example of Malaysians opting for unity and quality education at the same time.
At least 27 of the pupils are Malay children from the surrounding villages, with three Indians and the rest Chinese. FMT could not get the exact figures as the headmaster declined to comment, saying the education department has directed them not to talk to the media.
According to the village folk, Malay students have outnumbered others at this school over the past decade.
Most parents met outside the gates cited two major factors in opting to send their children to a Chinese school although there was a national primary school only about 1km away.
One parent, who identified himself as Nurfitri, said he decided to send his second child to a Chinese school as he wanted her to learn how to mix freely with children of other races.
“I want my daughter to learn the culture of other races in Malaysia. Besides that, learning a third language in our country is important. I have been told by other parents who sent their children here that the quality of education is also good,” he said.

UM — the country’s highest ranked university — however fell 10 places behind from its 21st ranking in 2020 to its current 31st place.
Separately, THE said the ranking demonstrates the growing strength of secondary emerging countries heavily driven by Pakistan, China, and Russia.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 10 — The Perikatan Nasional (PN) government has failed in its duty to provide a stable and effective administration to the country despite being a Malay majority government, said Amanah vice president Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub.
In an exclusive interview with the Malaysian Insight, Salahuddin said the PN government faces constant turmoil, leading voters to question its integrity.
“It’s been a year since PN and Muafakat Nasional have been in control. What more do they want?
“Their government is 99.9 per cent Malay – from ministers to deputies, except for a fraction from MIC and MCA.

Rare meteorite that fell on UK driveway may contain 'ingredients for life' |

(CNN)A fireball that lit up the sky over the United Kingdom and Northern Europe on February 28 was an extremely rare type of meteorite. Fragments of the space rock discovered on a driveway in the Cotswolds could provide answers to questions about the early history of the solar system and life on Earth.
Almost 300 grams (10.6 ounces) of the meteorite have been collected from the small Gloucestershire town of Winchcombe by scientists, who said the rock was formed of carbonaceous chondrite. The substance is some of the most primitive and pristine material in the solar system and has been known to contain organic material and amino acids -- the ingredients for life.
