Pele congratulated Cristiano Ronaldo after the Portugal forward's hat-trick against Cagliari took him past the Brazilian legend's tally of goals scored in official matches
Ronaldo netted three times inside the opening 32 minutes to take his career total to 770 - three clear of Pele's tally of 767.
"Life is a solo flight. Each makes his own journey. And what a beautiful journey you are having. I admire you a lot, I love watching you play and this is no secret to anyone. Congratulations on breaking my record of goals in official matches," Pele posted on Instagram
.
Some reports suggest this is a world record tally but that is disputed by the Czech Football Association, which claims former Austria and Czechoslovakia striker Josef Bican is football's true all-time top scorer with 821 goals.
Meanwhile, data from Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation (RSSSF) says Bican scored 805 career goals. But among them were 27 goals for Rapid Vienna's reserve and amateur teams, as well as strikes which were not in official international games. Remove those and Bican finished his career on 759 goals - short of Pele and Ronaldo's total.

PETALING JAYA: Umno has rebuffed calls to negotiate with Perikatan Nasional (PN) some 13 parliamentary seats it lost through defections.
According to a Sinar Harian report, Umno elections director Tajuddin Abdul Rahman said his party has already decided to contest in and retake the seats.
“Umno’s stand is to take back all the areas (lost through) defections. So, when we want to take them back, there is no need for discussions,” he said.
He was commenting on PN information chief Azmin Ali’s invitation to Umno to negotiate the 13 seats, which are among the reasons for their fallout.

Myanmar declares martial law in Yangon townships after deadly day |

YANGON, Mar 15 — Myanmar’s junta late yesterday imposed martial law in two densely populated Yangon townships after at least 18 protesters were killed in one of the deadliest days since the February 1 coup.
Yesterday’s violence brings the number of people killed in mass protests since the military wrenched civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi from power to around 100, though activists and rights groups believe it could be higher.
The junta has repeatedly justified its power grab by alleging widespread electoral fraud in November’s elections, which Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) party won by a landslide.
State-run media announced late yesterday that Yangon’s massive Hlaing Tharyar township and the neighbouring Shwepyitha township will be placed under martial law.

Sarawak PKR calls for legislative reforms to disqualify defecting reps, impose 10-year ban from polls
KUCHING, March 15 — Sarawak Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) has called for legislative reforms that will disqualify any elected representative who defects and switches allegiance, and prohibit them from contesting in an election for the next 10 years.
In hitting out at the recent defections by opposition members of Parliament, it said the failure of former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to implement any significant constitutional and legislative reforms during Pakantan Harapan’s (PH) 22 months in power has allowed party-hopping among MPs to be perpetuated.
It said politicians who defect are pursuing personal power and wealth instead of focusing on solving and managing issues affecting the people as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We condemn mid-term party-hopping among members of Parliament and perceive it as an insult to voters and a gross breach of parliamentary integrity.

Trump pressured Georgia investigator to find 'the right answer' in baseless fraud push
(CNN)In a phone call to the Georgia secretary of state's office in December, then-President Donald Trump urged a top investigator to find fraud in the 2020 presidential election, telling her that she would be "praised" for overturning results that were in favor of Joe Biden, according to audio of the call obtained by CNN.
The report is the latest example of Trump's extraordinary efforts to influence Georgia election officials as they certified the results, even though there is no evidence of widespread fraud in the election. Trump's actions have drawn the attention of Georgia's Republican secretary of state, Brad Raffensperger, as well as a Fulton County prosecutor who has launched a criminal investigation.
"When the right answer comes out, you'll be praised," Trump tells Frances Watson, the chief investigator at the Georgia secretary of state's office, in a six-minute conversation on December 23, according to the Journal.
"I won everything but Georgia. And I won Georgia, I know that. By a lot. And the people know it. And something happened there. Something bad happened," Trump reportedly told Watson during the phone call.

PETALING JAYA: The country’s democracy and quality of leadership is deteriorating with more MPs acting based on personal interests instead of values and principles, said Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan.
Declaring that the country belongs to all Malaysians and not to any individual or parties, he urged all Malaysians to stand up and collectively do everything within their means to “rectify” the situation and bring about a progressive democracy.
Mohamad, or Tok Mat as he is often called, said freedom of speech and expression in Malaysia was “diminishing” with the various emergency ordinances in place.
He added that recent events involving the suspension of Parliament and the disabling of the constitution pointed towards a “worrying decline in democracy”.

KUALA LUMPUR, Mar 14 — Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said today’s defections will not save the ruling Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition from its impending downfall.
The former minister said no political movement can sustain itself in the long run by building support on the back of defections, as he accused the government led by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin of luring MPs into its fold in a desperate bid to retain power.
Khaled insisted that the recent defections by three PKR Members of Parliament to the ruling coalition had only exposed PN’s frailty, and would merely delay the inevitable.
“Such is their strategy to strengthen PN. But be assured, all this will merely end up a strategy to delay PN’s downfall, not to consolidate it,” the Umno VP said in a statement issued this afternoon.

PETALING JAYA: Anwar Ibrahim says he has chosen not to respond to the many attacks against him by Mohamed Azmin Ali as he does not want to take things personally.
“I am not taking it personally. As you can see, I have not been responding to his relentless attacks on me,” he told Mingguan Malaysia in an interview published today.
“The people are intelligent enough to assess the actions of senior minister and international trade and industry minister Azmin Ali.”
He said his focus now was totally on the party’s political battles, which need a lot of attention.

IPOH, Mar 14 — Perak DAP chairman Nga Kor Ming today urged the Pakatan Harapan (PH) presidential council to allow the party to contest eight parliamentary seats and 25 state seats in the 15th general election.
Nga said this was to win back the state government which he claimed was stolen from the Perak PH coalition.
“We hope and request Perak Amanah chairman Datuk Asmuni Awi and Perak PKR chairman Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak will give away the requested seats to allow us to contest in the next general election and win back the government.
“And we hope this will be blessed by the PH presidential council,” he said in his speech during the Perak DAP party convention at Ipoh Convention Centre.
