KUALA LUMPUR: Perak Umno wants to win back its former strongholds in Larut, Bagan Serai and Bukit Gantang, all held by PPBM top guns who defected from Umno.
Perak Umno chief Saarani Mohamad expressed disappointment that Umno members in these constituencies were “stolen” by PPBM.
“Umno members were stolen. Weren’t there other Malays for them to steal?,” he asked at the party’s general assembly.
Home affairs minister Hamzah Zainudin is Larut MP while deputy health minister Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali is Bagan Serai MP. The Padang Serai seat is held by Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal.
All three had won in GE14 under the Barisan Nasional ticket while being members of Umno.
“Umno Perak will contest in Larut, Bagan Serai and Bukit Gantang,” he said to a loud applause from the floor, and shouts of Hidup Umno (long live Umno).
Former Umno president Najib Razak was also seen seated at the front row among the audience.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 28 — Veteran Umno politician Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah today said his party will battle all political parties that are not on its side in the 15th general election and that includes current ally PAS.
The Gua Musang MP said Umno has made the choice to sever ties with Bersatu, the anchor party in the ruling Perikatan Nasional (PN) and that PAS — which is also a component of the coalition — should make up its mind on who it wants to partner instead of trying to cosy up with both.
“We have already made the decision to not be with PN. Therefore, we will fight PN and if PAS is still with PN, we will fight them, what else can we do?
“But if they are with us through Muafakat Nasional, then they have to separate themselves from PN,” he told reporters during Umno’s 75th annual general assembly here.

Serpents, warlords and endless betrayal in Umno |

PETALING JAYA: Many emotions were left unfelt, many desires unfulfilled, after the first day of the Umno general assembly, but more suspense lies in store as different factions struggle for control of Malaysia’s biggest Malay-based party.
Epithets such as “hypocrite”, “enemy”, and “hate politics” had rung out even while calls for “unity” resounded in the assembly hall as party leaders vented their frustration about the current state of affairs in Umno.
But behind the veil are tales of hidden betrayal among friends, secret handshakes with enemies, and the seemingly never-ending struggle to stay at the top.
To ordinary folk, the two-day general assembly, in Umno’s diamond jubilee year, is a show of solidarity within a party founded on Malay interests which developed multiracial appeal through its leadership of Barisan Nasional (BN).

Bigger coalition needed for stable govt, says Saifuddin |

KUANTAN: There is a need to establish a larger coalition of political parties with as many members as possible to ensure a stable government, Pahang PPBM leader Saifuddin Abdullah said today.
Saifuddin, who was appointed chairman of Perikatan Nasional Pahang last night, said: “We are now in a situation in which there are parties who are part of the PN-led government, but not in the PN coalition, and that is raising a lot of questions.
“As for PPBM, it is better to be in a PN government and the coalition as well.”
Saifuddin’s comment comes at a time when Umno members at their general assembly are seeking to sever Umno’s relationship with PPBM. Umno has also questioned the stance of PAS, which is its partner in Muafakat Nasional. The Islamic party is also a member of PN.

PETALING JAYA: Penang’s manufacturing industry will be badly hit if the Kedah government’s plan to store water in the state picks up steam, industrialists said.
They said ample supply of water is crucial for the manufacturing sector, which is the backbone of the state’s economy.
They were commenting on the plan to build 14 water storage areas along Sungai Muda to ensure sufficient water for Kedahans and padi farmers along the river, a move which could potentially reduce water supply to Penang and its 1.7 million residents.
About 80% of Penang’s water is extracted from the part of Sungai Muda that flows in the state, and SME Association of Malaysia president Michael Kang said any measure to stem this supply will “definitely affect” the manufacturing sector, which contributes about 43% to the state’s GDP.

PETALING JAYA: Dr Mahathir Mohamad and certain ministers in the previous government opposed moves to keep promises made in Pakatan Harapan’s election manifesto despite efforts by other ministers pushing to fulfil the pledges, said DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.
Lim, who was finance minister in Mahathir’s cabinet, said: “When we talk about policies that we were trying to implement, we did face resistance. Not only from the prime minister but also other ministers.
“Some of us were trying our best to get Cabinet consensus on this but it was difficult. So it took some time.”

KUALA LUMPUR, March 28 — Putrajaya Umno deputy division chief Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz has been named as the sole individual suspended six years by the party’s supreme council by two separate newspapers.
Both Utusan Malaysia and Sinar Harian separately cited Umno election director Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman as their source following the disclosure by party secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan after their supreme council meeting last night.
Tun Faisal neither affirmed nor refuted the reports.
“I’m waiting for the official statement from the Umno supreme council,” he told Utusan Malaysia when contacted afterwards.

YANGON, March 28 — Across Myanmar, opponents of the ruling junta today mourned the killings of at least 114 people by security forces in the bloodiest day since the military coup on February 1, but vowed to keep protesting to end army rule.
Children were among those killed yesterday, Myanmar’s Armed Forces Day, according to news reports and witnesses, in a crackdown that drew renewed criticism from Western countries and was denounced by the US envoy as “horrifying”.
“We salute our heroes who sacrificed lives during this revolution and We Must Win This REVOLUTION,” one of the main protest groups, the General Strike Committee of Nationalities (GSCN), posted on Facebook.
Yesterday also brought some of the heaviest fighting since the coup between the army and the ethnic armed groups that control swathes of the country.
