PETALING JAYA: Former deputy international trade and industry minister Ong Kian Ming has given the government three simple ways to make Malaysia attractive for foreign direct investment (FDI) again.
He said government agencies’ guidelines and goals for attracting investment needed to be continuously overhauled, pointing out that its definition of “strategic investment” was often outdated.
In a statement today, the Bangi MP also said there might not be clear enough guidelines for major manufacturing investments from the likes of China in sectors like steel, glass and even paper.
“What is the expected key performance index (KPI)? What is the expected impact on local industries and what are the environmental standards which need to be adhered to?

Guan Eng slams PN for creating ‘a state of permanent crisis’ |

PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional was accused today of being “in a state of permanent crisis” and Malaysia “in a permanent state of political crisis” as a result of being run by a minority government.
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, making the accusation, said the open split between Umno and PPBM, both partners in the PN government, showed that prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin had lost his parliamentary majority.
He said Malaysia was in a permanent state of political crisis for being in the hands of a minority government.
The loss of Muhyiddin’s majority had come despite PN having engineered defections of MPs from PKR, he said.

Using ECRL to swing voter support for MCA, MIC? |

Apparently, the Selangor state executive council has rejected the transport ministry’s proposal for the East Coast Rail Link to traverse a northern Selangor alignment.
The proposed route would have involved massive land acquisition in Selangor. Therefore, the state Exco’s approval was required.
At the centre of the ministry’s application is their preferred alignment for Section C of the ECRL. The route reads like this: Mentakab – Bentong – Janda Baik – Gombak – Rawang (Serendah) – Kapar – Port Klang – North port – West port.
From Gombak, the alignment is planned to go back up north, passing through Selayang north-west to Serendah, before making a south westward journey towards Batu Arang, Kapar, Meru and Port Klang.
Eventually, it would connect to North port after which it terminates at West port.
It all sounds very complicated, right?
Political ploy
Yes, indeed, as the zig-zag alignment in the northern part of Selangor was coined by none other than the sole MCA minister in the cabinet (Wee Ka Siong) who is also the transport minister.
At first glance, this alignment appears fairly innocent. But according to a few political analysts in Selangor, the alignment will have effect on at least five parliamentary seats in Selangor, not to mention many state seats too.
Those seats are: Hulu Selangor (P94), Gombak (P98), Kapar (P109), Selayang (P97), and Klang (P110) as well as several state seats within those parliamentary constituencies.
The parliamentary seat of Bentong (P89) will be the main target and so will be the four state seats of Bilut (N33), Ketari (N34), Sabai (N35) and Pelagai (N36) within that constituency.
In this dubious plan, Gombak will be turned into the central ECRL station to serve Kuala Lumpur passenger traffic.
A local political pundit was quick to point out that it was not only a poor decision, as the northern alignment will cost a lot more, but it was also a crafted and calculated proposal to serve the hidden political agenda.

BENTONG: Veteran DAP leader Leong Ngah Ngah has retained his position as Pahang DAP chief for a third three-year term.
The committee election which took place at the Pahang DAP state convention today also saw all seven DAP state assemblymen and two members of Parliament retaining their positions in the state leadership.
Bentong MP Wong Tack was among the five committee members appointed. He had obtained only 108 votes to finish in 16th position among the 34 candidates contesting.
The four other committee members appointed were Tanah Rata assemblyman Chiong Yoke Kong, Go Mong Nging, Chok Chuan Jun and Chiang Mei Soon.

Umno-PAS dream romance heading for the rocks? |

PETALING JAYA: The union of Islamic party PAS and Umno two years ago was a political romance that warmed the hearts of many Malays unhappy with the then ruling Pakatan Harapan coalition.
The alliance of the two parties in Muafakat Nasional gave birth to the idea of uniting the Malay community under a Malay-run government.
But the courtship came with much baggage.
Since the 1950s, both parties have been fighting for the attention of the same group of voters, with one claiming to be more Islamic than the other.
The rivalry intensified when Umno successfully wooed three PAS Terengganu state assemblymen to switch sides in 1961, causing PAS to lose control of the state government.
Since then, several MPs from PAS had jumped ship to Umno, and both parties remained wary of one another, said political analyst Kamarul Zaman Yusoff of Universiti Utara Malaysia.
However, all was forgiven with the formation of Muafakat Nasional in September 2019, an idea strongly supported by party leaders and grassroots. “It was seen as a fresh start,” he told FMT.
But the relationship became rocky again after PAS started working closely with ruling Perikatan Nasional.
“The current issue is that Umno does not like the fact of PAS joining PN. Umno wants PAS to be with them, as Umno has bad blood with PPBM,” he said.

Extend olive branch instead of provoking Penang, Kedah MB told |

PETALING JAYA: Penang deputy chief minister P Ramasamy has told Kedah menteri besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor to extend an olive branch to Penang to resolve its raw water spat instead of continuing to provoke the state.
The DAP man pointed out that Penang has come to Kedah’s aid by dispatching personnel and a water tanker to assist several areas in the state currently hit by water shortage.
He said 25 personnel from Penang’s water authority were mobilised under the 60th Royal Water Engineers Regiment (RAJD) to supply treated water as well as lay and repair pipes from March 21 to April 5.
“It is abundantly clear that Sanusi, despite his big talk of punishing Penang with muddy water, has abandoned the people in his state to suffer water shortage.
“If good sense prevails, as a result of this humanitarian gesture by Penang, Sanusi should stop provoking Penang. In fact, he should wave the olive branch towards Penang.
“Let us see whether the current drought in Kedah leading to water shortage can knock some sense into Sanusi’s head,” he said in a Facebook post today.

Three things we learned from: Umno’s 75th AGM |

KUALA LUMPUR, March 29 — Umno held its second annual general assembly since losing its place as Malaysia’s premier political party over the weekend, amid talks of division within its ranks and questions about its future.
Observers predicted that the 75th assembly, meant to be held last year but delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic, would be one of bloodletting between three squabbling factions.
One side favours remaining in Perikatan Nasional and then there are those who do not. The third appears less interested in this for or against schism and is instead pushing for a leadership overhaul, according to some party insiders. This faction, however, is smaller in number.
How did the leadership respond? The tone adopted by Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in his policy speech provided some clues.

YOURSAY | Sabah, Sarawak must wake up to reality of PAS' agenda |

BobbyO: Sarawak politicians should wake up to the reality that they are supporting an allegedly racist party. If they continue to support PAS, then it clearly shows their selfishness. They are more concerned about protecting their own interests than the nation’s. This also includes Sabah politicians.
The real agenda of PAS is to bring division between the various races and only fight for the rights of one race. This is despite other races having contributed blood, tears and finances to the success of this nation.
Today, PAS wants to claim the nation for themselves after 60 years of hard work put in by our forefathers and the generations that followed.
PAS could not even rule one state and make it a success story after umpteen years. Yet, today they want to take over the whole nation.

Zahid knocks Annuar as ‘a pest’, dares him to quit |

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has taken aim at federal territories minister Annuar Musa, describing him as a pest and a backstabber, and challenging him to resign his post.
Zahid did not name Annuar. He merely spoke of “a minister who’s not on stage but who has stabbed Umno in the back” and challenged him to resign from the Cabinet.
“If he’s a man, he should resign as minister,” said Zahid, drawing cheers and applause from the crowd. “This is a pest. If it wasn’t for Umno, he wouldn’t be in such a position.”
However, Zahid later said he was confident that Umno ministers in the Cabinet remained loyal to the party.
Although Annuar was not named, there was little doubt about who Zahid meant. Annuar has come under fire from his party colleagues for being too PPBM-friendly.
Umno Supreme Council member Mohd Puad Zarkashi has previously accused Annuar, who is a former Barisan Nasional secretary-general, of being PPBM’s weapon within Umno.
Puad said Annuar had been openly hitting out at Umno and Zahid Hamidi to make the party look divided and claimed that Annuar was executing the “enemy’s game plan”.

Zahid says Umno no longer at crossroads after formalising split with Bersatu for GE15 |

KUALA LUMPUR, March 28 — Umno’s official decision to end its political cooperation with Bersatu for the 15th general election meant the party is no longer divided on the matter, president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.
Speaking to the press after the conclusion of the party's 75th annual general assembly this weekend, Zahid said the motion introduced to the delegation and the party leadership today to sever ties with Bersatu was unanimously accepted.
“Because the general assembly is the highest governing body in Umno, as stated in its constitution, once it has decided on a huge policy, its members must fully abide on decision that was made by the party
“And because of that, there shouldn’t be any claims or rumours out there that Umno is at a crossroads. Umno is not at a crossroads. The decision made by the general assembly has been very clear,’’ he said.
Zahid also said the party was considering another ultimatum, which is to immediately withdraw support for Perikatan Nasional the moment the Emergency is lifted on August 1 or earlier, but added that this will be discussed at length in the next supreme council meeting.
