Vote for a government that is not corrupt
Posted by: superadmin - 09-27-2021, 11:58 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

From Moaz Nair

Corruption at any level of society is dishonourable and unlawful. It is a symptom of a deep problem in society that can cause many conflicts which indirectly affect the economy, investment, enforcement, the legal process, and even ethnic division. It results in poor civic consciousness among the people that will in due course debase the whole society.

Unfortunately, there are politicians and officials who still consider corruption an acceptable way of life. Insatiability has blinded them when it comes to money and wealth.

Corruption is now perceived to be strappingly rooted in the nation’s culture. A very senior politician was once quoted as saying, “Corruption is a form of lubricant. It helps work get done faster.”

Ex-FDA adviser called 'probably the worst drug approval decision in recent US history

The road to Aduhelm: What one ex-FDA adviser called 'probably the worst drug approval decision in recent US history' for an Alzheimer's treatment

[Image: 210910142140-dr-aaron-kesselheim-restric...er-169.jpg]

(CNN)Dr. Aaron Kesselheim had been on an advisory committee for the US Food and Drug Administration for a half-dozen years, but he had never been to a meeting like this one.

The FDA establishes advisory committees to assist the federal agency with one of its most important duties: deciding whether to approve the distribution of new drugs. The stakes of these decisions are enormous. Based on the outcome of the FDA's deliberations, patients may gain access to lifesaving medicines, and manufacturers may reap billions in profits. Kesselheim, a professor at Harvard Medical School, was one of the members of this committee because of his expertise on pharmaceuticals that address diseases of the brain, including Alzheimer's, the irreversible, progressive brain disorder that destroys memory and thinking skills, and eventually causes death. Alzheimer's is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States.

Race wide open as Germany votes in post-Merkel election
Posted by: superadmin - 09-26-2021, 04:45 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

BERLIN – Germans voted today in one of the most unpredictable elections in its recent history, with Angela Merkel’s conservatives and the centre-left Social Democrats in a tight race for her crown as she prepares to leave the political stage.

The epochal election ushers in the end of 16 years in power for Merkel and places Germany, a byword for stability, in a new period of uncertainty.

Opinion polls show the race for the chancellery headed for a photo finish, with Merkel’s CDU-CSU conservative alliance on around 23%, just behind the centre-left Social Democrats on 25 percent – well within the margin of error.

“We will certainly see some surprises on Sunday,” said Nico Siegel, head of the Infratest Dimap polling company.

Despite the SPD’s lead in the polls, a victory for the conservatives “can’t be ruled out”, he said.

“The race for first place is wide open.”

Polls opened at 0600 GMT and will close at 1600 GMT.

China cops detain top execs of troubled HNA Group
Posted by: superadmin - 09-26-2021, 04:41 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

BEIJING – Chinese police have detained two top executives of the debt-laden HNA Group on suspicion of “illegal crimes”, said the conglomerate, as the government further cracks down on the country’s corporate sector.

The transport and logistics giant said chairman Chen Feng and CEO Tan Xiangdong have been detained on southern China’s Hainan Island, where the firm is headquartered.

“Measures have been enforced against (Chen and Tan) in accordance with the law for suspected illegal crimes,” said the company in a statement issued late Friday, without elaborating on the alleged offences.

It said its operations remain “stable” and “have not been impacted”.

The group – which owns Hainan Airlines, one of China’s biggest carriers, and is the country’s largest private aviation conglomerate – filed for bankruptcy in January and is in the middle of a restructuring process overseen by the local government after struggling to resolve a drawn-out cash crisis.

China ups funding oversight of Evergrande housing projects
Posted by: superadmin - 09-26-2021, 04:36 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

[Image: Evergrande_-_shanghai_-_sept_2021_-_reuters.JPG]

BEIJING – Several local governments in China have set up special custodian accounts for property projects by the country’s most indebted developer Evergrande to protect funds earmarked for housing schemes from being diverted, reported media outlet Caixin.

Reeling under a US$305 billion (RM1.27 trillion) debt, the property giant missed a payment deadline on a dollar bond last week, and its silence on the matter has set global investors wondering if they will have to swallow large losses when a 30-day grace period ends.

The special accounts have been set up since late last month in at least eight provinces where Evergrande has the most unfinished projects, said Caixin today, citing a source close to the developer’s management team.

These include Anhui, Guizhou, Henan, Jiangsu, and cities in the southern Pearl River Delta, it said.

The accounts aim to ensure homebuyers’ payments are used to complete Evergrande’s housing projects and not diverted elsewhere, such as to creditors.

In some southern cities like Zhuhai and Shenzhen, the offices of the Housing and Urban‑Rural Development Ministry are also involved in overseeing and reviewing the funds used in such projects.

Hadi Awang expected to retain top post in PAS elections, says source

PETALING JAYA: Abdul Hadi Awang is expected to retain his post as PAS president during the 67th PAS annual general assembly and central leadership elections in November.

A source close to the matter told FMT that those who opposed Hadi had left the party in 2015 to form Amanah and since then “PAS has been harmonious”.

“Usually, the president’s post is not challenged. The only exception was in 2015 but that rival camp lost and has since left PAS,” he said.

Hadi, 73, has held the president’s post since 2002.

[Image: Saifuddin-Abdullah-Ahmad-Azam-Ab-Rahman.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR: Ahmad Azam Ab Rahman, commissioner to the Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC) of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), has been appointed as Wisma Putra’s special adviser on Afghanistan.

In announcing this, foreign minister Saifuddin Abdullah said Azam’s experience and networking could help Wisma Putra to obtain first-hand information on Afghanistan.

“Currently, other than providing information and advice, he also helps Wisma Putra to facilitate humanitarian efforts by Malaysian NGOs.

“Looking at the prevailing uncertainties, it is crucial for us to keep in contact with reliable sources. This is where Azam has an upper hand.

“This is very important so that we have proper understanding of the latest developments. Definitely, Wisma Putra will be utilising many sources but his experience and networking will help us to obtain additional important information.”

He announced the appointment at the KL Conference on Afghanistan: Re-emergence of a Nation, held virtually today.
