PETALING JAYA: Civil servants who fail to get vaccinated against Covid-19 by Nov 1 could face the sack, said the Public Service Department (JPA).

Previously, JPA had only warned of “disciplinary action” for federal civil servants who were not fully vaccinated by Nov 1.

In a Bernama report today, JPA director-general Mohd Khairul Adib Abd Rahman said failure to comply with the department head’s instructions to get vaccinated on or after Nov 1 “may result in disciplinary action or termination of service”.

The report cited a JPA circular uploaded to its website yesterday.

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court will hear submissions by the government and three others if it can decide a suit against the existence of vernacular schools without calling witnesses.

Lawyer T Gunaseelan said Judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali would hear parties via a virtual proceeding before a ruling is made.

“Parties have filed written submissions and bundles of authorities. We will make oral submissions on Friday afternoon,” he said.

Gunaseelan, who is appearing for the Malaysian Chinese Language Council, Malaysia Tamil Neri Kalagam and Gabungan Persatuan Pelajar Tamil Malaysia, said the dispute could be determined by merely filing documents,

Johor PKR man slams Melaka PH as ‘opportunistic, irresponsible’

[Image: fmt-HASSAN-ABDUL-KARIM-new-14319-12.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: A PKR MP from Johor has hit out at the Melaka Pakatan Harapan leadership over the political crisis in the state, accusing the coalition’s state chapter of being “opportunistic and irresponsible”.

In a statement, Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim said he had disagreed with Melaka PH’s attitude from the start of the crisis.

“Melaka PH was opportunistic and irresponsible, dragging out this crisis until the Melaka state assembly was dissolved and now to a state election.

“I also believe that the central PH leadership failed to manage this crisis well and failed to give the right guidance and leadership. Now, what is happening in Melaka is a fiasco,” he said.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 19 — Former Pengkalan Batu assemblyman Datuk Norhizam Hassan Baktee will not get the chance to contest next month’s Melaka state election as a Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate if DAP has its say.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said his party is firmly against Norhizam and will take up the matter to the PH presidential council, Malay news site Astro Awani reported today.

“Some have asked and I have firmly stated that DAP has completely rejected the former Pengkalan Batu assemblyman as a candidate in the next state election.

MELAKA, Oct 18 — The distribution of seats involving PAS for the Melaka state election is expected to be known in a week’s time at the latest after discussions are held between PAS, Umno and Bersatu.

Melaka PAS commissioner Datuk Kamarudin Sidek said the discussions, to be managed by the PAS Central Technical Committee, were aimed at preventing more than two-cornered fights, thus harming the chances of all the component parties under the auspices of Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Muafakat Nasional (MN).

“PAS is in MN and PN, which also include Umno and Bersatu the collaborative relationship among all component parties is still intact. So, the issue of seat distribution for the Melaka state election should involve all parties concerned.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang held a video conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday, and said China hopes the upcoming new administration of Germany would maintain a positive and pragmatic policy toward China to reinforce the mainstream of cooperation of China-Germany ties.

This is the latest interaction between Chinese leaders with Merkel after Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Merkel by video link on October 13 and praised Merkel's contributions to China-Germany relations and China-EU ties.

Li told Merkel that the two sides should keep using the inter-governmental consultation mechanism to expand and strengthen cooperation, and China is willing to work with Germany and other countries to jointly deal with climate change and strengthen international cooperation to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

China will be more open, and hopefully the two sides can remain open to each other, to safeguard the rules-based multilateral trade system together and the stability of the global industry and supply chains, Li said.

Revive plan to stop child marriages, urge women’s groups
Posted by: superadmin - 10-19-2021, 10:12 AM - Forum: Local News - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The government needs to revive the national plan on child marriage launched by the Pakatan Harapan administration to put a stop to underage marriages, said women NGOs.

Sisters in Islam (SIS) said since the change of government in February 2020, there had been no clear indication if the women, family and community development ministry would implement the national strategic plan in handling child marriage and its causes.

“The government must revisit and act on the plan which was launched in January last year,” a SIS spokesperson told FMT.

The national plan was set up to address six main causes of underage marriage in the country.

How the spirit of Capt Speedy landed in an unholy row
Posted by: superadmin - 10-19-2021, 10:10 AM - Forum: Stop Racism and Religious Bigotry - Replies (3)

PETALING JAYA: A Malaysian-made whisky, a rarity in itself, which won international awards last year became the target of complaints days after its international launch at an online event.

Complaints started circulating on social media about its name, Timah, which some construed to be a contraction of Fatimah, daughter of Prophet Muhammad.

Objections were also made about the label’s imagery, of colonial-era police chief and administrator Tristram Speedy, known as Captain Speedy.

The social media comments led to the Consumers’ Association of Penang calling for a ban on its production, saying the use of the name Timah, which means tin in Malay, was offensive to Muslims.

Others, including Penang mufti Wan Salim Wan Mohd Noor and religious affairs minister Idris Ahmad, also chimed in.

Mahathir one of the causes of disunity, says DAP man
Posted by: superadmin - 10-19-2021, 09:59 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad was accused today of being one of the factors for the existence of disunity in the country.

Perai state assemblyman P Ramasamy of DAP said Mahathir had been “singing an old tune” about prioritising the Malays as being in the country’s best interest.

“Mahathir continues to state the same thing repeatedly, but many people may have already grown tired of these statements,” he said in a Facebook post this evening.

He said that Mahathir was one of the main drivers of a system that put the Malay and Umno political elite at a great advantage, referring to the New Economic Policy and its aftermath that was under Mahathir’s stewardship.

Biden cannot slander China's Xinjiang policy while seeking cooperation with China
Posted by: superadmin - 10-18-2021, 07:59 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 0259c3cd-e6ce-4876-b6e3-f6092a743b92.jpeg]

US President Joe Biden once again hyped China's Xinjiang policy on Friday as he delivered a speech at the dedication ceremony for the Dodd Centre for Human Rights at the University of Connecticut. Some analysts believe the US has been hoping a thaw with China in recent days, but Biden's rhetoric raises questions over Washington's sincerity.

"Sadly, when we look around the world today, we cannot say that the specter of atrocity is behind us," Biden claimed, "We see today the patterns, the choices playing out around the world even as we speak: the oppression and use of forced labor of the Uyghurs in Xinjiang…"

Biden's words fully embody the duality of his administration's China policy. On the one hand, it hopes to ease tensions with China and seek China's support and collaboration on subjects such as climate change, trade and global governance. On the other hand, in regard to the so-called human rights and ideology issues, the Biden administration has repeatedly piled pressure on China and hyped the "China threat" theory, in a bid to contain China, as well as ramp up the cohesion of the US alliance system and restore the US' international credibility and global leadership.
