Maszlee all but confirmed as PKR’s pick for Johor MB
Posted by: superadmin - 02-12-2022, 11:48 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – Simpang Renggam MP Maszlee Malik is set to become PKR’s choice for Johor menteri besar in the upcoming state election.

Multiple sources have told The Vibes that the former education minister, who recently joined PKR, is also currently the opposition’s frontrunner for the top post.

Any final decision on the matter will depend on upcoming discussions between the Pakatan Harapan (PH) component parties, as approval must be obtained from DAP and Amanah.

The two parties are said to have other prospective candidates in mind, and a compromise may have to be made for the coalition to reach a consensus.

Johor PKR chief Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh confirmed that his party has finalised a name for the menteri besar position, but stopped short of naming him, pending discussion among PH’s top brass.

He said that both DAP and Amanah have yet to be officially informed of PKR’s pick.

“As far as we are concerned, we need to discuss this with our PH partners first. We won’t divulge details yet. It is not for us (PKR) to announce ourselves,” he told The Vibes today.

Health Ministry offers Sinovac boosters on walk-in basis from Monday
Posted by: superadmin - 02-12-2022, 11:35 AM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: 25052021_-_KUL_-_sinovac_Covid19_Vaccine...ien-10.JPG]

KUALA LUMPUR – In a bid to encourage the uptake of Covid-19 vaccine booster shots, the Sinovac jab will be made available Monday onwards at all offsite vaccination centres (PPVs) under the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme.

According to the Health Ministry’s subsidiary ProtectHealth Corporation Sdn Bhd, the free booster is available on a walk-in basis for those who received Sinovac as their first and second dose.

In a statement, the company said those who are eligible and want the Sinovac booster can refer to the list of offsite PPVs at its website.

“However, the Health Ministry is recommending Pfizer boosters for Sinovac recipients as they offer a higher level of protection.” – The Vibes, February 12, 2022

Malaysia’s political theatre: it’s all about power
Posted by: superadmin - 02-12-2022, 11:02 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: ZAHID-HAMIDI-PELANCARAN-PAU-FMT-061219-7.jpg]

From Murray Hunter

There is one thing in common with the “Sheraton Putsch” that removed Pakatan Harapan from power, the substitution of Muhyiddin Yassin with Ismail Sabri Yaakob as prime minister and the dissolution of the state assemblies of Sabah, Melaka, and now, Johor.

These events were solely about who should rule. They were not about any fundamental disagreements over policy. They were tactical lunges for power.

The Malaysian political arena is structured in such a way that encourages power plays. Government and politics in Malaysia require various parties to collaborate on mutual objectives, yet compete with each other at the same time. Alliances are made and broken on a regular basis on both sides of politics.

The Malay political environment is influenced by history, a resulting culture that resonates a disposition towards power fixation, a consistent behaviour to these beliefs, and corresponding outcomes based upon power dynamics.

PKR ‘desperate’ for Johor victories after polls setbacks, say analysts
Posted by: superadmin - 02-12-2022, 10:56 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: PKR is “desperate” to win as many seats as possible in Johor, which is why several PKR leaders have spoken out against giving Muda what are seen as easy seats in the state elections, says an analyst.

James Chin of the University of Tasmania’s Asia Institute said many in PKR are unhappy that the leaders had been considering giving “good seats” to Muda, as the PKR members believed their party could do well in Johor.

He said PKR was not strongly against working with Muda but was simply “in big trouble” after its dismal performance in the Melaka and Sarawak elections where it lost in all seats contested.

Cracks deepen but PH can’t afford a break-up, say analysts
Posted by: superadmin - 02-12-2022, 10:51 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: anwar-ibrahim-pakatan-harapan-pkr-hq-twi...20-1-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: A political analyst says cracks in Pakatan Harapan are deepening, but the former ruling coalition is unlikely to break up because its main component parties are too weak to stand on their own.

“DAP cannot win the hearts and minds of Malay voters. Amanah is a small party and PKR is at its weakest point,” said Council of Professors fellow Jeniri Amir.

He said PKR lost a lot of its strength when those linked to former deputy president Azmin Ali quit the party.

Recent issues in Johor, such as PKR’s choice to forego using the PH logo and the party’s unhappiness over Amanah’s surrendering of the Puteri Wangsa seat to Muda, also showed the state of disunity in the party, he said.

A BN loss in Johor will stop ‘court cluster’ comeback, says Muhyiddin
Posted by: superadmin - 02-11-2022, 05:50 PM - Forum: Politics - Replies (2)

PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin claims that the only way to stop Umno’s “court cluster” is for Barisan Nasional (BN) to lose in the upcoming Johor polls.

“If Umno wins in the Johor state elections, they will urge the prime minister to dissolve Parliament and hold a general election (GE15),” the Bersatu president said in a Facebook post.

“When Parliament is dissolved, the person with the power to decide which candidate will contest and lead the party in the elections is the president of the party, not the PM.”

We’ll help you bring ballot boxes home: activists offer EC helping hand
Posted by: superadmin - 02-11-2022, 03:43 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 20210326-election_commission_worker_ball...ernama.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – A coalition of civil society groups dubbed Undi Johor today launched a support campaign for the upcoming polls, intending to “fill the gaps left by the inefficiency of the Election Commission”.

The Op Undi Johor campaign has offered to help the EC transport ballot boxes back from Singapore for the election.

The campaign will also see the creation of a “Pulang Mengundi” (Come Back and Vote) fund to subsidise transportation for students and youths returning to Johor to vote.

“Due to the failure of government agencies, it is time for the rakyat to jaga rakyat (for the people to look after the people),” said Raja Ahmad Iskandar Fareez at a press conference today.

The group has also called for an extension of the registration period for postal voters, which the EC set from February 9 to February 18.

Earlier this week, Undi Johor issued four demands to the EC, namely to facilitate the smooth return of overseas voters, establish overseas polling stations, allow early voting on campus for students, and enable postal voting for Johoreans in East Malaysia.

These demands, according to the group, went unanswered and as a result, the group today issued a statement calling EC chairman Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh “a shame” for failing to take steps to improve the election process since the pandemic began.

“The EC’s inaction harks back to the dark days prior to the 14th general elections,” said Raja Ahmad Iskandar Fareez of the think-tank Research for Social Advancement.

U.S. inflation data is like a ‘punch in the stomach’ for the Fed, says Citi economist
Posted by: superadmin - 02-11-2022, 03:04 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

  • The latest U.S. January inflation data came in like a “punch in the stomach” for the Federal Reserve, said the global chief economist of Citi Research Nathan Sheets, adding that means the next rate hike could be as aggressive as 50 basis points.
  • The U.S. consumer price index for January surged to 7.5% year-over-year, according to the Labor Department. Both headline and core CPI rose 0.6%, compared to estimates for a 0.4% increase by both measures.
  • “These inflation data today came like a punch in the stomach for Jay Powell and his colleagues,” Nathan Sheets told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Asia” on Friday.

The latest U.S. January inflation data came in like a “punch in the stomach” for the Federal Reserve, which raises the possibility for an aggressive 50 basis points rate hike in March, the global chief economist of Citi Research said.

The consumer price index for January, which measures the costs of dozens of everyday consumer goods, rose 7.5% year-on-year, the Labor Department reported Thursday.

“This inflation data today came like a punch in the stomach for Jay Powell and his colleagues,” Nathan Sheets told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Asia” on Friday, referring to the Fed chairman.

“Their narrative is that as the year progresses, we should see inflation start to abate and to come on down. And there was not even a hint of that in the January data,” he added.

The monthly CPI rates also came in stronger than expected. Both headline and core CPI rose 0.6%, compared to estimates for a 0.4% increase by both measures.

Even with the challenges posed by the highly contagious omicron variant, inflation still remains high, and more progress needs to be made to bring inflation down to 3% for this year, Sheets said.
