CYBERJAYA: Former education minister Maszlee Malik has criticised the education ministry for not having a holistic plan to revitalise the country’s education system.
When asked about his biggest concerns surrounding education, the Simpang Renggam MP said he was worried about the system’s “lack of direction, uncertain future and unclear direction”.
Warning that the pandemic-interrupted classes over the past two years will have a long-lasting impact on students, Maszlee noted that the education ministry had not drawn up post-Covid-19 education plans for this “lost generation”.
“The loss of learning over these past two years will have an impact for the next five, 10, 20 years,” he told FMT.
“(But) if they (education ministry) carry on doing ‘business as usual’, even though the impact of Covid-19 has been very severe, there is nothing we can expect from them.

PETALING JAYA: The country would be “politically stable” if Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) do not have many seats, PAS election director Sanusi Md Nor said today.
Describing Barisan Nasional as backstabbers despite being a partner of the governing coalition, Sanusi said BN, especially Umno, was the cause of many disputes.
BN is a greedy coalition partner, demanding posts as ministers and in government companies, he said.

Attempting to kidnap US media to serve his own anti-China agenda, Rubio further jeopardizes US media’s crumbling credibility
Infamous US anti-China senator Macro Rubio is spouting his trademark nonsense again. In an op-ed for Fox News Friday, Rubio hit out at the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) for what he believes favorable coverage of China during the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games.
He accused NBC of "reciting Chinese Communist Party talking points in its broadcasts of the Winter Olympics from Beijing," saying NBC "could just as easily be named the 'National Beijing Corporation.'" His simple and groundless evidence is that when covering the February 4 opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics, NBC analysts described so-called "first-hand accounts and verified reports of Beijing's human rights abuses" as "allegations," and the network cited the Chinese government as saying "accusations of genocide are the lie of the century."
The Chinese side has refuted the Western slander of "Uygur genocide" with solid evidences and data, which was not mentioned in NBC's Olympics coverage. The US broadcaster was simply quoting one sentence of Chinese government's response to the accusations of "genocide," but even this was unacceptable to Rubio, seen by him as an act of "peddling a hostile regime's propaganda" and "a capitulation to the Party, motivated by corporate greed."

Chinese bitcoin miner exodus faces hurdles as equipment remains stuck from shipment delays, tariffs and legal quagmire - As many as 2 million cryptocurrency mining machines are stuck in China’s Sichuan province, lawyers estimate, after a government crackdown halted operations
- Miners trying to move to North America are losing millions of dollars while waiting to export machines through complex shipping routes to avoid tariffs
A massive exodus of bitcoin mining equipment from China is facing hurdles as millions of machines remain stuck over complex relocation procedures, according to lawyers handling such cases.
The country’s cryptocurrency mining industry continues to deal with delays in getting their operations up and running again since the government started clamping down on related activities last May. The bitcoin mining crackdown has already pushed much of this activity offshore, but large mining operations are finding it difficult to get their pricey, specialised hardware out of the country.
Compounding their troubles is the fact that miners are losing potential revenue each day the machines are offline, to the tune of about 170 yuan (US$26.70) in profit per machine by one estimate. For the largest operations, this means a loss of millions of dollars that can never be recuperated.

Why manners matter: Top tips for raising kind kids |

The benefits of teaching kids to be considerate early on go well beyond good manners, with research suggesting that raising young children to be kind is crucial for their development.
Having a child that knows when to say please and thank you is just one aspect of why parents should be raising kids to be considerate toward others from an early age.
A study by academics in the psychology department at the Canadian University of British Columbia, published in 2012, examined the effect on toddlers when they demonstrated “prosocial” behavior, which refers to showing kindness and generosity toward others.

DAP to face disaster if it drops performing Johor reps: Ronnie Liu |

KUALA LUMPUR – It is a clear recipe for disaster should DAP continue with its game plan to drop performing incumbents and prevent them from defending their seats in the Johor polls, as previously seen in the Melaka and Sarawak elections, said Ronnie Liu.
In a statement today, the DAP central working committee member said his party must address cronyism in the party’s candidate selection process.
“In Sun Tzu’s The Art of War, we cannot have a divided army. DAP should select the best man (or woman) for the seat and not the best seat for a crony.”
In view of the challenging situation, Liu said his party should instead focus and mitigate losses to avoid a total wipe-out in the southern state.
DAP must refrain from replacing performing assemblymen in their current seats or promising them a “promotion” to another state seat deemed to be “safer”, he added.
“Avoid dropping performing reps in safe seats to be transferred or ‘promoted’ to another ‘safer’ state seat or a promise of a future parliamentary seat in GE15 and be replaced by a newbie or rookie.
“It is noted that leadership has met up with some incumbents to avoid replacing them.
“Take the opportunity to close ranks by bringing back some old guards who are still young, efficient, effective and efficacious reps.”

Better safe than sorry: Khairy on Malaysia’s cautious steps in declaring endemic phase
KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia is taking prudent steps before it decides to declare the country’s transition from the Covid-19 pandemic to the endemic phase, said Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.
He said this careful approach included ensuring that Covid-19 cases in Malaysia, especially those involving hospital admissions, did not continue to surge.
“We are monitoring other countries like Sweden and Denmark. In my opinion, they might have declared an end to the Covid-19 pandemic too early. For example, in Denmark they declared that Covid-19 was not a threat to public health but cases needing hospitalisation increased rapidly.
“That’s why for the Health director-general (Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah) and I, we prefer to be cautious. Some say our approach is conservative and others say too conservative, but for us it is better to be safe than sorry,” he told a press conference after launching the Mass Urology Surgery Initiative at Hospital Selayang yesterday.
If in the next two to three weeks the Omicron wave had little effect on hospital admission rates with most cases showing mild symptoms, the government might be more confident to move to the endemic phase, he added.
