After Mahathir’s attack on chopsticks, what’s next? Banana leaf?
Posted by: superadmin - 01-05-2022, 10:44 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

By Mariam Mokhtar.

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad unleashed a disgraceful diatribe against the Chinese, and claimed that they had failed to assimilate because they wanted to preserve their own community, customs and ways.

Referring to the use of chopsticks by the Chinese in Malaysia, he said, “The Chinese eat with chopsticks; they don’t eat with their hands. They have not adopted the Malaysian way of eating food. They retained the chopstick which is an identity with China, not with Malaysia, and many other things.”

Dr Mahathir is scraping the bottom of the barrel with his latest attack on the Chinese.

What’s next on his agenda? Banana leaf?

Since when was eating with hands the Malaysian way of eating food? Malaysia is a melting pot of many cultures, but eating with hands in Malaysia is synonymous with the Malays and Indians.

So, what prompted Dr Mahathir’s latest launch against the Chinese? Is he preparing early for GE15 and pitting Malays against non-Malays?

It was Dr Mahathir’s divisive policies and his affirmative action plan, which destroyed race relations in Malaysia.

Under him, the Bureau Tata Negara (BTN), a propaganda tool, was used to brainwash impressionable and innocent young minds into adhering to his Ketuanan Melayu policy.

The society was divided into Malays and non-Malays. Why blame the chopsticks?

Here are some pertinent questions for Dr Mahathir.

If Chinese Malaysians stopped using chopsticks to eat their food, would they be given equal status as Malaysians in Malaysia?

Would the Chinese have greater access to scholarships and a place at public universities including Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM)?

Would Chinese children be accorded places in Mara boarding schools?

Would the New Economic Policy (NEP) be disbanded?

Does it mean the Chinese are no longer required to hand over 51% equity in their companies to Malay businessmen?

If the Chinese willingly gave up their chopsticks, would a non-Malay be made Vice Chancellor of a public university, or the CEO or chairman of a GLC?

Would he be made the head of the armed forces?

Could the most qualified and principled Chinese become prime minister?

Would Chinese who refused to eat with chopsticks be allowed to set up a law firm and practice syariah law, especially if he had read syariah law at university?

If the Chinese volunteered to forego eating with chopsticks and opted to eat with their hands instead, would Dr Mahathir ensure they would not be called “pendatang” anymore?

Conversely, are Malays who work in an office environment and are required to wear suits failing to assimilate because they are trying to be western?

Why not require them to wear Baju Melayu instead?

Why has Dr Mahathir picked on the use of chopsticks by the Chinese when in reality, it is the quota system, the racist agenda, the NEP and the Ketuanan Melayu policies that have discouraged assimilation?

The majority of Malays refuse to visit a Chinese household during festive days like Chinese New Year because many dread the presence of dogs, but more importantly, they have been indoctrinated by ignorant ulamas that they cannot eat or drink from the crockery and glasses of non-Muslims.

The Chinese family will accommodate their Malay/Muslim friends with paper plates or disposable cups and cutlery, but to no avail.

Many Malays refuse to attend Chinese weddings because they are “fearful” of being served haram food, despite their Chinese hosts making special arrangements to order food and separate crockery and cutlery from a halal caterer for their Malay/Muslim guests. Many Malay guests do not turn up, despite saying they will attend.

If Dr Mahathir wants to see a fine example of assimilation, all he has to do is visit Sarawak.

They promote unity through racial diversity. Family members intermarry people of different faiths and cultures. On festival days, the same family sits at the dining table and can be seen eating with chopsticks, their hands, or with fork and spoon. This would be a very rare sight in Semenanjung Malaysia.

Dr Mahathir’s greed for power resulted in the controversial Project IC of the 1990s.

In this politically motivated move, many Filipinos became Malaysians overnight. Illegal migrants were given Malaysian identity cards provided they voted for the ruling party. Citizenship was exchanged for votes.

Project M (M for Mahathir), as it is also called, destroyed the racial and religious harmony and demography of Sabah. Is this what Dr Mahathir means by assimilation?

Today’s Malay is a confused being. Some have abandoned their Malay culture and adopted Arab dresses, mannerisms and speech.

Why does Dr Mahathir not censure the Malays about their failure to assimilate a Malaysian identity?

Dr Mahathir said many Indians and Arabs “became Malays” by sacrificing their own ethnic identities to adopt the Malay language, customs and names.

He said, “They were accepted by the Malays as Malays, even though it’s obvious they are not Malays.”

Doesn’t he know that the Indians and Arabs need not sacrifice their own ethnic identities?

It is alleged that many Indians rejected their own culture and became pseudo Malays because of the privileges that come with becoming a Malay/Muslim.

The former Indian, on becoming Malay, or rather a pseudo Malay, will find a whole new world of opportunities that were previously unavailable to him as a non-Malay. These incentives may be government aid for the small trader, scholarships and housing allocations.

One has only to think of the former husband of the teacher, Indira Ghandi, whose former husband denounced his own Hindu religion and Indian ethnicity to become a Muslim.

Eleven years after kidnapping his youngest child from her mother (Indira), the police claimed that he could not be traced and brought to justice.

The police were prepared to ignore a court order instructing them to find the convert husband.

This sort of “assimilation” brought more division in the society and unhappiness to this particular family.

So, what is Dr Mahathir’s definition of assimilation?

As a former PM, he is not promoting unity and he has failed miserably to show leadership by example.

What a shock! Man rents out shoplot for RM1,600, gets RM695,000 TNB fine
Posted by: superadmin - 01-05-2022, 08:54 AM - Forum: Local News - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR: A 70-year-old landlord was slapped with a RM695,000 fine by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) after his tenant was suspected of tampering with the electricity meter for bitcoin mining activities.

Wu Tuan Chiang said he rented his shoplot at Bandar Puteri Puchong to an “IT system solution company” for RM1,600 a month in May 2019.

After receiving the notice from TNB, he found that his shoplot had been vacated since December 2020 and he had not been able to trace the tenant.

Wu was among 10 building owners who took their case to MCA’s Public Services and Complaints Department head Michael Chong.

At a press conference here today, Chong said the 10 owners had jointly accumulated electricity fines totalling a whopping RM1,758,000 following the misuse of their properties.

He appealed to TNB to look into the complaints of these “small-time’ property owners.

Traders that use nails, staples to secure food packages can be fined, jailed: health DG

KUALA LUMPUR – Food traders who use nails, staples, or other similarly dangerous materials to secure food packaging can be charged in court, said Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

He said any trader convicted of the offence could be fined not more than RM10,000 or jailed not more than two years or both under Regulation 36 under the Food Hygiene Regulations 2009.

Besides, Dr Noor Hisham added, a heavier punishment could be imposed if the materials were found in the food.

“Section 13 of the Food Act 1983 states that any person who prepares or sells any food that has in or upon it any substance that is injurious to health commits an offence and shall be liable, on conviction, to a fine not exceeding RM100,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 10 years or both,” he said in a statement today.

PKR man mocks Mukhriz’s track record after remarks on Anwar
Posted by: superadmin - 01-04-2022, 08:29 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: A PKR man has mocked Pejuang president Mukhriz Mahathir’s track record after his remark that opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim was no longer in contention for the race to be prime minister.

This comes after Mukhriz said Anwar’s time had passed, noting that a lot of people have been saying this, including those within Pakatan Harapan (PH).

“It’s time for a new set of people to take over,” Mukhriz told BFM in an interview yesterday.

Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim reminded Mukhriz that he couldn’t even complete his stint as Kedah menteri besar, “not once, but twice”.

Study reveals up to 43 times higher death rate among unvaccinated
Posted by: superadmin - 01-04-2022, 06:27 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: A Malaysian study on Covid-19 deaths found that unvaccinated Malaysians had a 43.2 times higher mortality rate than individuals fully vaccinated with Pfizer and 12.5 times higher than those given Sinovac doses.

According to health news portal CodeBlue, the study analysed Covid-19 deaths by vaccination types and status in the country between February and September last year and found the total Covid-19 age-standardised mortality rate (ASMR) was 47.5 per 100,000 population for the unvaccinated group.

ASMR adjusts for differences in the age distribution of the population.

The study by Nur Asheila Abdul Taib et al. was published in the medical journal The Lancet – Regional Health Western Pacific on Jan 1.

It analysed 20,823 Covid-19 deaths between Feb 24 and Sept 14 last year. The median age of those who died was 61 years.

More SUVs than ever are being sold worldwide, half of them electric
Posted by: superadmin - 01-04-2022, 11:53 AM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

NEW YORK, Dec 29 ― SUV sales have reached a new record in 2021, with a market share of 45 per cent worldwide. While this boom in sales looks to be somewhat of a setback in efforts to reduce CO2 emissions, it's important to note that nearly half of the models sold this year are electric, either 100 per cent electric or plug-in hybrid. It's a statistic that bodes well for a segment which has never seen such popularity and such a range of choices.

For 2021, SUVs alone account for almost half of all car sales worldwide (45 per cent). They are currently particularly popular in the United States, Europe and India.

At a time when automakers are moving more or less rapidly to all-electric, there has never been more choice on the market for electric SUVs. Nearly one in two SUVs sold worldwide is now an electric vehicle. This is obviously still a drop in a bucket for a global fleet where combustion engine vehicles represent 98 per cent, but the trend is showing a change in direction.

Uphold MACC Act’s credo to promote integrity and accountability – Gobind Singh Deo
Posted by: superadmin - 01-04-2022, 11:12 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob must break his silence and address the concerns raised about Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki.

The matter was raised by Sungai Buloh MP R Sivarasa last month and subsequent to that, a member of the MACC’s Consultation and Corruption Prevention Panel, Edmund Terence Gomez, resigned in protest because of a purported lack of action over the allegations.

Section 2 of the MACC Act 2009 states clearly that the principal objects of the act are to promote the integrity and accountability of public and private sector administration by constituting an independent and accountable anti-corruption body which is the commission.

Section 5 thereafter provides for the appointment of the chief commissioner who shall be responsible for the direction, control and supervision of all matters relating to the commission.

Azam Baki should be terminated if unprepared to face PSC: Kit Siang
Posted by: superadmin - 01-04-2022, 10:51 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang has called for Tan Sri Azam Baki’s termination as Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner if he continues to evade the scrutiny of the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) on Agencies under the Prime Minister’s Department.

Lim, in prompting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to act upon the matter, said Azam must answer to the recent allegations of conflict of interest against him, or have him terminated as MACC chief.

“Azam should publicly explain why he is afraid of appearing before the PSC on Agencies in the Prime Minister’s Department in response to allegations made against him, affecting his commitment to integrity,” Lim wrote in a statement today.

The Iskandar Puteri MP suggested Ismail Sabri discuss the ultimatum for Azam at the next cabinet meeting, and for the prime minister to initiate constitutional amendments that will see the MACC fall under the purview of the Parliament instead of the Prime Minister’s Department.

“Ismail Sabri should present this proposal for cabinet approval at the cabinet meeting tomorrow… or will there be no cabinet meeting tomorrow?

Umno leaders jostle for starting positions as GE15 push begins
Posted by: superadmin - 01-04-2022, 09:31 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The heat is on in Umno as members jostle for seats and party positions as well as trying to pick the “right horse” as they clamour for a general election to be held this year, according to party insiders.

Two Supreme Council members told FMT that there are two factions within the party: those close to vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who is the prime minister, hope he will speed up party elections as soon as possible; the other faction, aligned to party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, wants party polls to be held after the next general election (GE15).

The Ismail faction wants early elections in the hope that he would become party president and thus have the final say in selecting election candidates.

“If Zahid remains the Umno president, they fear they might not be picked as candidates,” one Umno leader said.

YOURSAY | PAS wants to have its cake and eat it too
Posted by: superadmin - 01-04-2022, 09:28 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 027983a12a40f4e48d6414ebd37324f0.jpg=s800]

BobbyO: PAS is worried that Umno might sweep even Kelantan, seeing how they got rejected in Malacca and Sarawak.

Now, they fear that they will lose many more seats as they will be facing Umno and the opposition in the next elections. As a result, they may lose the lucrative positions that they hold at the federal level.

They have always used the unity of Muslims as an excuse to gain power. One day, they are hoping they can replace Umno and Bersatu at the federal level.

The sad fact is they have failed big time in ruling Kelantan. Their ministers are clueless as to how to run a ministry.

Yet, they are sitting in their lucrative positions enjoying the perks and benefits while the ummah (Muslim community) is suffering out there - firstly from the Covid crisis and now the floods.
