KOTA BARU – The Kelantan government will not stop logging activities in the state as they are carried out in accordance with the terms and conditions stipulated under the National Forestry Act 1984, said Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah.
He said logging activities in Kelantan were conducted according to stipulated regulations.
Each state is given a quota by the National Forestry Council, and the condition that after trees are felled, reforestation must be carried out in the affected area, he added.
He said the trees had a set age after which they had to be felled to avoid them falling onto and destroying other growth.
“For example, if the quota given for this year is 3,000ha, we should not exceed 3,000ha. Otherwise, we will be subject to action by the National Forestry Council. The quota is not determined by the state, but the National Forestry Council.

Azam Baki should have told his brother to ‘f*** off’: Robert Phang |

KUALA LUMPUR – A former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) advisory board member has grilled the graftbusters’ chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, asserting that he is making a mockery out of the people and the country’s judiciary system by looking to clear himself of any alleged wrongdoings.
Tan Sri Robert Phang, now a prominent social activist and philanthropist, said Azam further convoluted the matter by implicating Anti-Corruption Advisory Board (LPPR) chairman Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang as the one who absolved him of any wrongdoing, suggesting LPPR as infallible.
He added that Azam breached MACC standard operating procedures (SOPs) by allowing his brother to use his share-trading account, saying such actions were equivalent to condoning an offence.
“101% he breached the rules. It concerns SOPs, because if my brother approached me (to use my trading account) and I was an MACC chief, I would tell him to f*** off.
“But now you allow him to carry on, so that’s the same as condoning an offence that amounts to the same punishment – in my view.
“He (Azam) is making a fool out of us, the system, and the entire judiciary. Letting him go is the easy way to go about it, but this case should be investigated by police or any other independent body, without fear or favour.

Drop in Xi’an cases indicates light of hope amid hard lockdown |

Xi'an, capital city of Northwest China's Shaanxi Province which was hit hard by a COVID-19 epidemic flare-up in the past weeks, saw a dim light of winning the battle against the resurgence as it reported 35 infections on Wednesday, a sharp drop from the previous day's 95 cases.
All the new cases were detected among people in quarantine or sealed-off areas, which is a signal of community transmission being controlled, local authorities said on Wednesday.
If the trend continues for a couple of more days without cases rebounding, the conclusion can be made that the previous control measures have worked, Wang Guangfa, a respiratory expert at Peking University First Hospital, told the Global Times on Wednesday.
Wang said the lifting of the lockdown should be carried out in a "precise" manner - normalcy should be restored to communities that have reported zero cases or have passed a certain quarantine period without new cases.

Shambolic MACC presser raises further questions about anti-graft body’s integrity |

KUALA LUMPUR – A special press conference by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to clear its name amid worsening public perception did anything but.
From barring certain media entry to disregarding the need for an independent probe into allegations of improprieties, the presser yesterday did not do the anti-graft body any favours.
From the get-go, the handling of the press conference was a complete disaster.
Several journalists who arrived for the event were greeted with a “no entry” message by MACC personnel at the front gate, who said only 40 “registered” practitioners had been given the clearance to do coverage at MACC’s main auditorium, which could fit 300 people (or 150, if social distancing is taken into account).
The Vibes was among those initially barred entry, alongside others, including from Malay Mail, The Malaysian Insight and Malaysia Gazette, who all knew nothing about the requirement to register.
An MACC officer, when contacted, informed that the top management had already decided which media organisations were allowed into the conference, in the name of public health measures.

Better to fire slacking ministers than axing 144 athletes, says MP |

PETALING JAYA: Instead of axing 144 athletes from the National Sports Council’s (NSC) training programme, the government should remove incompetent ministers and deputy ministers, an opposition MP said.
Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim, a former deputy youth and sports minister, said he had raised concerns over the lack of funding for the NSC’s training programme.
He said the ministry was only allocated RM17.5 million in 2020 for international sports championships such as the SEA Games in Vietnam, the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, and the Asian Games in Hangzhou this year.
This compared to RM75.5 million allocated in 2018.
In a statement today, Sim said that when he raised the matter in Parliament, its minister gave an assurance that athletes would not be neglected.
“Clearly, the minister had lied in Parliament when just a month after that, a total of 144 athletes were dropped from the national sports training programme,” he said, adding that some athletes claimed they were not consulted before the announcement.
He said it would be better to remove 10 ministers and deputy ministers to resolve the lack of funding issue.
“The salaries of the ministers and deputy ministers are more than enough to accommodate our athletes in their sports training programme,” he said.

Did Azam breach stock ownership laws? |

PETALING JAYA: The Securities Commission (SC) has been urged to investigate whether top graft buster Azam Baki breached stock ownership laws when he let his brother use his share trading account.
The call for a probe was made by lawyers Rafique Rashid Ali and M Manoharan as well as Subang MP Wong Chen and Klang MP Charles Santiago.
Azam, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief, said at a press conference yesterday that he had willingly given his brother permission to buy shares using his account and that he had explained the matter to the Anti-Corruption Advisory Board.
Speaking to FMT, Rafique referred to Section 25 (4) of the Securities Industry Central Depositories Act (Sicda), which states that securities accounts must be in the name of the benefiting owner.
“Azam’s press conference must now be subjected to investigation by the Securities Commission,” he said.

Could microclots help explain the mystery of long Covid? |

One of the biggest failures during the Covid-19 pandemic is our slow response in diagnosing and treating long Covid. As many as 100 million people worldwide already suffer from long Covid. That staggering number will eventually be much higher, if we take into account that diagnoses are still inadequate, and that we still do not know what the impact of Omicron and future variants will be.
Patients with long Covid complain of numerous symptoms, the main ones being recurring fatigue and brain fog, muscle weakness, being out of breath and having low oxygen levels, sleep difficulties and anxiety or depression. Some patients are so sick that they cannot work or even walk a few steps. There is possibly also an elevated risk of stroke and heart attacks. One of the biggest sources of concern is that even mild and sometimes asymptomatic initial Covid-19 infection may lead to debilitating, long-term disability.
Since early 2020, we and other researchers have pointed out that acute Covid-19 is not only a lung disease, but actually significantly affects the vascular (blood flow) and coagulation (blood clotting) systems.
A recent study in my lab revealed that there is significant microclot formation in the blood of both acute Covid-19 and long Covid patients. With healthy physiology, clots may form (for instance, when you cut yourself). However, the body breaks down the clots efficiently by a process called fibrinolysis.

[UPDATED] Abu Zahar dares Gomez to prove misconduct emails claim |

PUTRAJAYA – Despite evidence to the contrary, Anti-Corruption Advisory Board (LPPR) chairman Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang has doubled down that he did not receive any documentary proof alleging impropriety involving the anti-graft body’s top guns.
Abu Zahar said no emails pertaining to claims of misconduct, supposedly sent by former Consultation and Corruption Prevention Panel (PPPR) member Prof Edmund Terence Gomez, had reached him.
Both PPPR and LPPR are independent oversight bodies under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
The Vibes had, on Sunday, published the email trails between Gomez, the LPPR secretariat and PPPR chairman Tan Sri Borhan Dolah that took place last November.
In a tell-all press conference today, Abu Zahar challenged Gomez to provide evidence he had indeed sent those emails detailing the impropriety.
“Please, come over and show me whatever it is. I have explained, and I then got an officer to confirm. We have not been shown (those emails).

Only independent probe can clear Azam, says anti-graft watchdog |

PETALING JAYA: An anti-corruption watchdog has rejected the Anti-Corruption Advisory Board’s (ACAB) move to clear top graft-buster Azam Baki of any wrongdoing over his ownership of corporate shares.
Earlier today, ACAB chairman Abu Zahar Ujang said it was satisfied with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner’s explanation that his share account was used by his brother to purchase shares.
Abu Zahar said ACAB found no conflict of interest and that Azam did not have any pecuniary interest in the purchase of the shares, which was made in the open market in 2015 and transferred to his brother’s account the same year.
However, Center to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4) said the ACAB’s inquiry did not amount to an independent probe to ascertain “the truth and details”.
“Only an independent probe will suffice to clear his (Azam) name and restore the integrity of MACC,” C4 executive director Cynthia Gabriel told FMT.
