Zahid must make ‘big sacrifice’ for Umno’s sake, says analyst
Posted by: superadmin - 06-14-2021, 09:08 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi should consider making a big “sacrifice” for the sake of the party and make way for other leaders, says a political analyst.

Mustafa Ishak, a former politics professor, said the reality is that Zahid and Umno will face an uphill task of overcoming the perception linked to Zahid’s trial on 47 charges of money laundering and criminal breach of trust involving millions from Yayasan Akalbudi.

Had it not been for the corruption case, Zahid would have naturally been Umno’s candidate to be prime minister, said Mustafa in response to a proposal by former minister Zaid Ibrahim that Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah should be appointed interim prime minister of a new government.

Mustafa said although Zahid was Umno president, others such as Tengku Razaleigh, deputy president Mohamad Hasan, vice-president Ismail Sabri and former vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein were more likely candidates for the top position.

Malaysian employers urge Putrajaya to set up Covid vaccine research centre
Posted by: superadmin - 06-14-2021, 09:03 AM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 — Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) has called on the government to set up a national vaccine research centre employing local experts and resources to ensure a long-term vaccine supply for the country.

MEF president Datuk Dr Syed Hussain Syed Husman JP lauded the government’s move in setting up various centres for vaccination, such as mega centres, mobile units and vaccination centres at private clinics and hospitals as well as in mobilising the armed forces medical corps under the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme.

“But while we plan the infrastructure of vaccine logistics and centres, there should also be a comprehensive strategy for the supply of vaccines.

Biogen Alzheimer’s drug and the battle over dementia treatment of the future
Posted by: superadmin - 06-13-2021, 07:38 PM - Forum: Health News - No Replies

  • FDA approval of Biogen’s Alzheimer’s drug Aduhelm has sparked a major controversy in dementia treatment.
  • More than 6 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s or other dementias, the sixth-leading cause of death in the U.S., and by some industry estimates the number of sufferers could double in the decades ahead.
  • Several high-profile FDA panel advisors quit after the controversial Biogen drug approval, which could generate billions of dollars in sales, but others advisors and dementia experts say it may be a more hopeful moment for the brain disease pipeline.

The FDA’s approval of Biogen’s Alzheimer’s drug Aduhelm was a landmark moment in the life of Dr. Paul Aisen. The director of the Alzheimer’s Therapeutic Research Institute at USC has spent the past three decades focused on treating the neurodegenerative disease, and in recent years helped shepherd this particular drug through the various phases of clinical trials.

But sitting in his sun-drenched office in San Diego in early June, he felt slightly confounded by the manner in which the Food and Drug Administration early June approved its use on an “accelerated” basis, which is usually reserved for cancer medications. This meant its clinical benefits were considered likely, but approval for long-term use would be subject to more extensive study in a fourth phase of trials.

Highlighting the “unusual nature” of the regulator’s green light, given that an advisory board of experts had strongly, and publicly, opposed the approval, Aisen, who works as a paid consultant to Biogen, insists there were still “a lot of questions that I have — that do not yet have answers.”

The Latest: Virus infections are rising sharply in Moscow
Posted by: superadmin - 06-13-2021, 07:07 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

MOSCOW — The tally of new coronavirus infections in the Russian capital rose more than 1,000 from the previous day as Moscow heads into a week in which many businesses will be closed under a mayoral order.

The national coronavirus taskforce said Sunday that 7,704 new infection cases were recorded, continuing a steep spike that has alarmed city officials. At the beginning of June, Moscow was recording about 2900 new cases a day.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin on Saturday ordered businesses that do not operate on weekends to remain “non-working” through the end of this week and closed food courts and children’s play areas. He also ordered restaurants and bars to be limited to takeout service from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Nationwide, 14,723 new infections were reported Sunday, about 1200 more than a day earlier. Overall, Russia has reported about 5.2 million infections and 126,000 deaths.

There’s ‘religious thuggery’ in the country, says Ramli Ibrahim
Posted by: superadmin - 06-13-2021, 06:48 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Classical dance legend Ramli Ibrahim said there was some form of “religious thuggery” occurring in the country, in the wake of a talk he was due to give to students at a local university being cancelled at the last minute.

He felt it was difficult to rectify the situation as those in power, including those in schools and institutions of higher education, had been indoctrinated.

“Everyone is in this flow, and that is why the situation cannot be stopped anymore,” he said.

Ramli also took a dig at the former Pakatan Harapan administration for failing to reset and reform a system “which is a kind of cancer” that has infected the education system, among others.

“It is all a kind of religious thuggery that is happening at the moment.

Anwar slams Dr M over Mageran proposal
Posted by: superadmin - 06-13-2021, 06:40 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: anwar-ibrahim-tun-mahathir-mohamad-fmt-081218-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has hit out at former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad over his proposal for a Majlis Gerakan Negara (Mageran) to be set up to temporarily govern the country.

In a video posted on Facebook, Anwar said there was no rationale for Mageran to be established at the expense of democracy or parliamentary proceedings, adding that it would give rise to authoritarian and dictatorial powers.

“Don’t sacrifice the people just because we want a shortcut to power through the use of the Emergency or Mageran,” he said.

The PKR president said continuing with the Emergency would cause the economy to suffer even more, and result in the confidence among foreign investors and local players to decline even further.

He said Malaysia needed a stable system of government with clear direction and the guarantee of civil freedoms to be established in order to boost investor confidence.

“Maintaining the Emergency and enacting laws without any (parliamentary) debates and with just two or three individuals deciding the fate of 32 million people will not help revitalise our economy,” he added.

Commenting on the opposition party leaders who were granted an audience with the King recently, Anwar said the details of their discussions cannot be revealed, but their stand on certain matters can be publicly stated.

“Some people are taking advantage of this situation though. When asked if they agree with the Emergency, they say no. But they then call for a Mageran under the framework of an Emergency,” he said, taking a jibe at Mahathir.

Former Umno strongman describes PN govt’s situation as ‘weird and unique’
Posted by: superadmin - 06-13-2021, 04:44 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: FMT-syed-hamid-albar-spad-ex-spad-29032019-8.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Former Umno stalwart Syed Hamid Albar, who is now with Bersatu, said Perikatan Nasional (PN) admitted that the current situation of the government is “weird.”

“I have never seen such a government in any part of the world. Where is the collective responsibility when a person places one foot here and puts the other on the opposite side?” he told Utusan Malaysia in an interview.

He was referring to the current scenario where vocal Umno members, who are not in the administration, are at odds with those holding positions in the government or agencies linked to it.

“In my opinion, we should not have such a government. It is weird and unique.”

Help the govt, don’t push for polls, Tajuddin tells Umno
Posted by: superadmin - 06-13-2021, 04:39 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Umno should help the government and focus on the fight against Covid-19 instead of pushing for a fresh general election, says the party’s elections director, Tajuddin Abdul Rahman.

In a statement, the Pasir Salak MP said calls for a general election would only complicate the Perikatan Nasional government’s efforts to curb the spread of the virus.

“As the Umno elections director, I am committed to helping the government in the national agenda and freeing the people and the country from this pandemic.”

He said the Umno machinery in state and parliamentary constituencies should be mobilised to help the government.

Tajuddin said the high number of Covid-19 cases demanded that Umno focus on the safety and well-being of the people.
“The country is facing a spike in cases and deaths.

Posted by: superadmin - 06-13-2021, 02:12 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

SINGAPORE: A Malaysian man who had completed his vaccination regime in February is among the 18 new Covid-19 cases reported yesterday in Singapore, according to the republic’s health ministry (MOH).

Labelled as Case 64169, the 57-year-old man, who is asymptomatic, works as a land rigger at Jurong Port Pte Ltd.

“His case was detected when he was tested for Covid-19 on June 10 as part of rostered routine testing (RRT). He was immediately isolated when his antigen rapid test (ART) result came back positive, and a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test was administered on the same day.

“His PCR test result came back positive on June 11. His serology test result is negative. His cycle threshold (Ct) value was very high, which is indicative of a low viral load,” said the ministry.

MOH noted that another test taken on June 12 came back negative for Covid-19 infection.

Hishammuddin urges govt to issue pandemic related emergency approvals faster, speed up vaccination

KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 — Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein today called for more ‘agility and flexibility’ in Malaysia’s governance to adapt quickly and be more decisive, having weathered the Covid-19 pandemic for at least a year now.

Commemorating the 450th day since the first movement control order (MCO) was implemented nationwide, Hishammuddin said the greatest tragedy for Malaysia would be if Malaysians were unable to reflect on their own mistakes and weaknesses.

As time went on, Hishammuddin said Malaysia may have lost that delicate balance between prioritising public health and our economic interests as pandemic fatigue sets in.

“Today, 450 days on — we must look back and reflect. The unknown is no longer as mysterious as it was last year.
