Coronavirus outpacing vaccine effort, says WHO, after G7 doses pledge
Posted by: superadmin - 06-15-2021, 09:52 AM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: 3500.jpg?width=620&quality=85&auto=forma...5a61b450e3]

The World Health Organization has warned that Covid-19 is moving faster than the vaccines, and said the vow by G7 countries to share a billion doses with poorer nations was simply not enough.

“This is a big help, but we need more, and we need them faster. Right now, the virus is moving faster than the global distribution of vaccines,” World Health Organization (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told journalists. “More than 10,000 people are dying every day ... these communities need vaccines, and they need them now, not next year.”

Global health leaders also warned the pledge was too little, too late, with more than 11bn shots needed.

Faced with outrage over disparities in jab access, the Group of Seven industrialised powers pledged during a weekend summit in Britain to take their total dose donations to more than a billion, up from 130m promised in February.

Malaysia’s plan to fast-track jabs at workplaces slammed
Posted by: superadmin - 06-15-2021, 09:03 AM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia's move to start inoculating workers in key economic sectors against Covid-19 before the completion of vaccinations for senior citizens and front-liners has drawn criticisms from several opposition politicians.

Mr Khairy Jamaluddin, the national coordinating minister for immunisation, said on Monday (June 14) that the government will begin vaccinating industry workers from Wednesday, as part of measures to reduce infections in workplaces that continue to dominate the number of new clusters.

Vaccine centres will be opened for the manufacturing, construction, plantation, retail and hospitality sectors.

  End the Emergency now
Posted by: superadmin - 06-15-2021, 08:58 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: frontliners-covid19-exhausted-tired-bern...0521-1.jpg]

From Ashraf Abdullah

The Emergency has failed. And that is a fact.

Therefore, it has to be revoked immediately. To allow a failed process to continue will be senseless, immoral even. A dereliction of duty.

When the Emergency was first sought, the government’s excuse was that it will help expedite efforts to end the Covid-19 pandemic. Although not many, some people believed it.

However, since then, have things improved? Far from it. In fact, it became so bad that it almost crippled our healthcare system.

When the Emergency was proclaimed on Jan 12, Malaysia had 28,554 active coronavirus cases and 555 deaths. When this article was being written, the number of active cases stood at 73,324 with 3,908 deaths. The number of active cases more than doubled and deaths increased by seven times.

ICUs at government hospitals are filled to the brim. government resources are stretched to breaking points. Doctors, nurses and other hospital staff have no rest.

No more excuses to extend emergency, say analysts
Posted by: superadmin - 06-15-2021, 08:54 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The recent surge in Covid-19 cases, coupled with the sluggish economy, has deprived Putrajaya of any more excuses to extend the state of emergency, according to political analysts.

They also urged the government not to use the Sarawak state elections as an excuse to prolong the state of emergency.

Analyst Azmi Hassan said the rakyat were told that the emergency would end in August and “they are now waiting for that. But with the Sarawak state elections coming this year, the government may use it as an excuse to advise the King to extend the state of emergency.

“But this can be curtailed if the King declares an emergency in a particular area.”

Upko says Mageran can’t bring political stability
Posted by: superadmin - 06-14-2021, 09:08 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KOTA KINABALU: Upko is the latest political party to reject Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s proposal for a national operations council similar to the Majlis Gerakan Negara (Mageran) to temporarily take over the reins of the country.

Upko president Wilfred Madius Tangau said the matter was among nine issues he raised at a virtual audience today with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah.

Madius said he was prepared to explain the party’s decision to its Warisan Plus allies.

“Our explanation is simple – we are not convinced Mageran can bring political stability because it does not involve the people, does not involve Parliament.”

Madius said if Mageran is formed, it would rely only on its members who would need to ensure it makes no mistakes.

Should mistakes be made, Madius said the people would be angry and this could lead to an uprising not only against Mageran but possibly the royal institution.

‘Stubborn Malaysia’ in the way of reform and growth, say economists
Posted by: superadmin - 06-14-2021, 05:56 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

[Image: Noor-Azlan-Ghazali-Ramon-Navaratnam.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s persistent stubbornness has gotten in the way of important reforms that have long been mooted but never executed, economists say.

Speaking at a webinar hosted by the Jeffrey Cheah Institute on Southeast Asia, Noor Azlan Ghazali, head of the economics and management cluster of the National Council of Professors, said the pandemic has laid bare problems that have needed addressing for decades, but have lingered due to this inflexibility at various levels.

“Report after report, blueprint after blueprint … anyone proposing another study should forget about it, we all pretty much know what needs to be done for the country,” he said.

Noor Azlan noted that recommendations like boosting competitiveness, creating high-skill jobs and closing the income gap have been on the docket for years, but were never properly addressed.

Palm oil futures facing biggest drop in 16 months
Posted by: superadmin - 06-14-2021, 04:53 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

[Image: FMT-KELAPA-SAWIT-ESTATE-SALAK-SENDAYAN-170419-10.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian palm oil futures are on track for their biggest drop in more than 16 months after they fell nearly 10% in morning trading today.

The benchmark palm oil contract for August delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange fell RM363, or 9.9%, to RM3,300 a tonne by the midday break, extending losses into a sixth session and hitting its lowest since Feb 4.

Last week, palm oil posted its first weekly drop in three weeks, falling 11.3% on worries over tepid June exports and forecasts of higher stocks and output.

“Crude palm oil futures on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange are trading sharply lower following bearish momentum in CBOT (Chicago Board of Trade) soy oil futures,” Anilkumar Bagani, research head of Mumbai-based vegetable oils broker Sunvin Group, told Reuters.

Hisham’s act of social distancing from the govt
Posted by: superadmin - 06-14-2021, 03:45 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: FMT-HISHAMMUDDIN-HUSSEIN-ASEAN-FOREIGN-M...-37-09.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Foreign minister Hishammuddin Hussein’s criticism of the government yesterday could be an indication that he is distancing himself from the Perikatan Nasional-led administration, says an academic.

Universiti Malaya socio-political analyst Awang Azman Pawi said Hishammuddin’s criticism of the government was a “rare” event.

Hishammuddin had criticised the government bureaucracy yesterday, saying it was a “key barrier” to the implementation of the country’s vaccination efforts. He also spoke on the need for consistency in SOPs and the pursuit of mass testing, something health experts and political leaders have been calling for.

Awang Azman told FMT it appeared as if Hishammuddin was trying to distance himself from the PN-led government.

Israel's new prime minister is sworn in, ending Netanyahu's 12-year grip on power
Posted by: superadmin - 06-14-2021, 02:26 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 210613094510-01-israel-knesset-vote-06-1...ge-169.jpg]

Jerusalem (CNN)Naftali Bennett was sworn in as Israel's new prime minister on Sunday, after winning a confidence vote with the narrowest of margins, just 60 votes to 59. His victory ends a 12-year grip on power by former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the country's longest-serving leader.

After four elections in two years, Bennett's incoming government breaks a long political deadlock and ushers in the most diverse coalition Israel has ever seen, including the first Arab party to serve in the government. In his speech before the Knesset confidence vote, Bennett celebrated the diversity and warned of polarization within the country.

"Twice in history, we have lost our national home precisely because the leaders of the generation were not able to sit with one and another and compromise. Each was right, yet with all their being right, they burnt the house down on top of us," Bennett said. "I am proud of the ability to sit together with people with very different views from my own."
