  Appoint talented non-Malays as vice-chancellors
Posted by: superadmin - 06-15-2021, 07:57 PM - Forum: Stop Racism and Religious Bigotry - No Replies

[Image: Universiti-University-Malaya-020519-3.jpg]

From Kua Kia Soong

So, there are five vice-chancellor posts in public universities that are vacant now and there seems to be a problem trying to find the right candidates. For a country that is hoping to become a high-income society soon, one wonders what the problem is.

Some have put it down to the question of political appointments, just like finding a CEO for a government-linked company (GLC). We know it is not just an issue of political patronage as we have had ruling coalitions under Barisan Nasional, Pakatan Harapan and now Perikatan Nasional and they all refuse to confront the elephant in the room, namely blatant racial discrimination.

Before May 13, 1969, there were two non-Malay vice-chancellors at Universiti Malaya – Huang Li Song (1965-66) and Chin Fung Kee (1966-67). After the Emergency following the riots and the introduction of the so-called “quota system”, with the amendment (8A) to Article 153 of the Federal Constitution, there was no mention in the amendment nor in the New Economic Policy that the vice-chancellors of public universities must be Malay.

Still, the record speaks for itself – since 1969, every single vice-chancellor or deputy vice-chancellor for that matter, in all our public universities has been Malay.

With such a blatant racial bar on promotions and meritocracy, is it surprising that since 1971, many non-Malay academics have left for other countries to find a more level playing field that puts competence first and where their capabilities are acknowledged and celebrated?

Nonetheless, is it really the case that there are no non-Malay academics left in the country today who are qualified to be vice-chancellors in any of the 20 public universities in the country? How long must Malaysian citizens put up with this charade of trumpeting lofty sounding education philosophies while practising such overt and embarrassing racial discrimination?

Where a meal without beans is incomplete!
Posted by: superadmin - 06-15-2021, 04:59 PM - Forum: Travels - No Replies

In Brazil, poverty, colonisation and modernism turned beans into the culinary symbol of this continent-sized nation.

In mid-February this year, if it weren't for the pandemic, hordes of Brazilians and travellers would have packed out Carnival street parties and sambadrome parades for five uninterrupted days of music and dancing. Those in Rio or São Paulo would certainly have come across the black bean-based feijoada, Brazil's flagship stew and an omnipresent meal in south-eastern Carnival celebrations. In Bahia's capital, Salvador, revellers would have likely feasted on acarajé, a typical Afro-Bahian fritter made of black-eyed peas.

"Ten out of 10 Brazilians prefer beans," says the theme song of a 1979 soap opera – not surprisingly, called Wonder Bean. Poetic license aside, the truth is there is no food so popular in Brazil as beans. More just than a favoured ingredient, they are the culinary symbol of our national identity.

Beijing tells Nato to stop hyping up China threat
Posted by: superadmin - 06-15-2021, 04:50 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

China has accused Nato of slandering its peaceful development after alliance leaders warned about "systemic challenges" coming from Beijing.

China's actions, including expanding its nuclear arsenal, threatened "rules-based international order", Nato said.

It was the first time Nato had placed China at the centre of its agenda.

In its response, China said its defence policy was "defensive in nature" and urged Nato to "devote more of its energy to promoting dialogue".

"Our pursuit of defence and military modernisation is justified, reasonable, open and transparent," China's mission to the European Union said in a statement.

It added that Nato should view China's development in a "rational manner" and "stop taking China's legitimate interests and rights as an excuse to manipulate bloc politics, create confrontation and fuel geopolitical competition".

Major US mall owner files for bankruptcy
Posted by: superadmin - 06-15-2021, 03:11 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

[Image: 1617719207916?e=2159024400&v=beta&t=u6YB...vQW5_6JUE4]

New York (CNN Business)Washington Prime Group, a major mall owner of more than 100 locations across the United States, filed for bankruptcy, citing pandemic-related shutdowns.

The Columbus, Ohio-based company filed for Chapter 11 late Sunday, saying Covid-19 "created significant challenges" and that the move is "necessary." Washington Prime secured $100 million in new funding to support its day-to-day operations so it can "continue in the ordinary course without interruption."

"The company's financial restructuring will enable Washington Prime to right size its balance sheet and position the company for success going forward," said CEO Lou Conforti. "During the financial restructuring, we will continue to work toward maximizing the value of our assets and our operating infrastructure."

Shares of Washington Prime (WPG) plunged as much as 55% in early trading. The stock is down 60% for the year.

Temporary closures and relaxation of rent to some of its tenants were the causes of the bankruptcy. Washington Prime, which warned this move was coming in recent regulatory filings, said it's using Chapter 11 to "implement a comprehensive and consensual financial restructuring" to deleverage its nearly $1 billion in debt.

Shifting consumer habits and the pandemic rattled the retail industry over the past year. Two other mall owners, CBL Properties (CBLPRD) and PREIT (PEI), both filed for bankruptcy last year and cited similar problems. All three mall owners were hurt by some majo

he Emergency Cannot Be Extended – The Monarchies Are More Powerful And Smarter
Posted by: superadmin - 06-15-2021, 02:15 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Malay-Rulers-Malaysia-Monarchies-Sultans.jpg]

Last October, when King Sultan Abdullah rejected the ruling Perikatan Nasional government’s request to declare a State of Emergency, the monarch had also warned MPs against destabilizing the government. At lightning speed, PAS Islamist party president Abdul Hadi Awang lectured the Opposition to obey the royal advice and stop politicking.

This February, when King Sultan Abdullah decreed that Parliament can reconvene even during the Emergency period, the monarch had also reminded the government that Malaysia practises the democratic system based on the principle of the supremacy of the Constitution. This time, however, PAS supremo Hadi disappeared and no longer talked about obeying the royal decree.

The so-called Malay-centric Perikatan Nasional government is not only illegitimate, but is also being led by munafiq (hypocrite) leaders, especially the snake oil salesman Hadi Awang. When it suits them, they will lecture until foaming at the mouth that people must obey the King. When it’s against them, they will keep quiet and treat the King like dirt.

Review tax policy on health supplements, think tank tells govt

PETALING JAYA: A think tank has called for the government to review the tax policy on dietary and health supplementary products following a global rise in demand during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Center for Market Education (CME) said in its latest policy paper that an increased awareness in personal health and protection against diseases had a positive impact on the demand for dietary supplements.

However, despite the growth in demand, Malaysia still lagged behind its Asian counterparts, it said in the paper titled “Dietary Supplements in the Malaysian Context: Policy Recommendations for Enhancing Freedom of Choice and Healthcare Savings”.

“Less than 30% of the (Malaysian) population consumes dietary supplements compared with countries like South Korea (60-70%), Taiwan (40-50%) and Australia (40-50%).

Despondent at the end or beginning of hope
Posted by: superadmin - 06-15-2021, 10:14 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

From Akhramsyah Muammar Ubaidah Sanusi

It is easy to be disgusted to see what is happening to our country. The whole world is suffering, but where others move forward, despite the misery, even sprinting with hope in the all too short periods when the pandemic eases about them, we remain confused and directionless.

It is also easy to partake in the common hobby of our people, pointing fingers at those we blame for our suffering. The politicians, both in power or deprived of it, being those often pilloried. Also those in power by station, by job, by role, and now, ultimately, also by birth.

It is not so easy it seems to channel the anger now brewing among us into something more. Resignation and apathy seem easier paths for many, helpless and increasingly penniless. We crave the stability we have now lost, forgetting how ungrateful we were when we once had it.

We have little choice really, easy or not. Now our future seems to rest in the hands of nine gentlemen so detached from our daily lives that it should be easier to fear or despise them. But we are so driven by desperation that so many hope, while also confused as to what really we should hope for.

Whatever happens at the Istana where too few of our citizens will ever tread in the coming day or so, we cannot allow ourselves to continue to believe that our fate is in the hands of others. We have now been reduced to laying hope for the future on the nine monarchs.

The world is laughing at us with pity.

[Image: 5200.jpg?width=620&quality=85&auto=forma...6e203e4243]

Dangerously hot temperatures across the US south-west will continue to climb this week, reaching higher than 120F (49C) in some areas, exacerbating the region’s already-dire drought conditions and increasing the risk of new fire ignitions.

Extreme heat will be felt across much of Utah, along with southern and central California, Nevada and Arizona.

More than 48 million people across the west are now under heat advisory watches or warnings from the National Weather Service, which is predicting that statewide records will be broken in Nevada and Arizona, along with hundreds of new daily record-high temperatures set in cities in the coming days.
