Forget the phases, just open businesses, bosses tell Putrajaya
Posted by: superadmin - 08-10-2021, 03:39 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Business owners have urged Putrajaya to open all economic sectors and forgo its earlier plans to use different phases under the national recovery plan (NRP) as indicators to ease restrictions.

This comes as the Klang Valley, the heartbeat of the country’s economy, remains under lockdown in Phase 1 since June 1 while other smaller states have moved on to Phase 2 and even Phase 3.

Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) president Syed Hussain Syed Husman said the government should instead zoom in, isolate and treat those in red zones.

“The authorities should adopt a combined strategy of rapid vaccination and open businesses with strict SOPs.

Majority doubtful, PM must call early Parliament sitting, says lawyer
Posted by: superadmin - 08-10-2021, 12:01 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: dewan-rakyat-parlimen-bernama-100821-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: A lawyer has echoed calls for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to reconvene a Parliament sitting sooner than later now that Umno has disclosed two letters by party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Abdul Shukor Ahmad said democracy demands that Muhyiddin prove his majority support either to the King or in the Dewan Rakyat.

“Last week, Muhyiddin announced that he still enjoys support and will convene a Dewan Rakyat sitting in September.

“However, that sitting must be held sooner than later due to prevailing circumstances,” he told FMT.

Shukor said this in response to the documents dated July 30 and Aug 4 published on Umno’s website yesterday.

Umno leadership just caretaker until party polls are held, says RoS
Posted by: superadmin - 08-10-2021, 11:08 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Umno-flag-bendera-umno-fmt-100520-1-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: The Umno Supreme Council can only carry out the party’s administrative work and function in a caretaker capacity until the party elections are held, says the Registrar of Societies (RoS).

RoS director-general Jasri Kasim said policy decisions must be brought to the general assembly first before implementation because of this caretaker status.

According to Utusan Malaysia, Jasri said RoS had received a letter of explanation from Umno regarding the decision to postpone the party elections for 18 months, which was previously considered as invalid as the postponement decision was made after the expiry of the term of the incumbent Supreme Council for the 2018-2021 term on June 30.

He said RoS will examine and review the explanation letter first because the party had submitted new information. While the content of the letter could not be revealed, he said, RoS would look into it one by one.

Why so many Covid-19 cases are dead on arrival
Posted by: superadmin - 08-10-2021, 10:46 AM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: 4_ISLAM_FUNERAL_COVID19_FMT_29072021.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: An overwhelmed health system, a breakdown in contact tracing and a lack of awareness on comorbidities are the likely reasons for the recent rise of “brought-in-dead” Covid-19 cases, say two doctors.

Malaysian Medical Association president Dr Subramaniam Muniandy said those who have other illnesses suffered more with Covid-19.

“But a lot of people in this country do not recognise or know of their comorbidities,” he told FMT, adding that diabetes and hypertension were especially common.

“Having regular medical check-ups is not a practice in our country. People don’t usually look for a doctor until they are sick.”

Subramaniam explained that this was why it was important for people to get vaccinated, as it increased resistance against the virus and protected those with comorbidities from becoming seriously ill.

3 factors Putrajaya must consider before reopening economy
Posted by: superadmin - 08-10-2021, 09:19 AM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Putrajaya needs to consider several factors objectively before deciding to reopen economic sectors, after clusters in the manufacturing sector had led to a surge of Covid-19 cases in Selangor, a health think tank says.

The Galen Centre for Health and Social Policy said the government must ask itself three things:
  • Is the epidemic under control?
  • Is the healthcare system able to cope with a resurgence of cases that may arise after the relaxing of measures and reopening of sectors?
  • Is the public health surveillance system able to cope, detect, manage cases, and identify areas where there is a resurgence of cases?
These three questions, Galen CEO Azrul Mohd Khalib said, could help determine whether restrictions can be released slowly or not at all.

Zahid swore he won’t back Anwar, says Ahmad Maslan
Posted by: superadmin - 08-10-2021, 09:15 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has sworn to party MPs that he would not support Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister, or become a partner of Pakatan Harapan (PH), Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said tonight.

Speaking at an online talk show, Ahmad said Zahid had made the oath at a recent meeting with several Umno MPs to explain the party’s decisions over the past week.

“There are accusations that the president is leading Umno to be with PH and DAP. The president took an oath in God’s name (Wallahi, Wabillahi, Watallah) in front of Umno MPs that he would not support Anwar as prime minister or be with PH or DAP.

“I was there. The president didn’t want to meet the MPs in big groups for fear of flouting SOPs, so he met them one by one or in pairs to inform them about the party’s direction,” he said.

Think twice before jumping ship, MPs told
Posted by: superadmin - 08-10-2021, 09:04 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Any MP planning to jump ship in support of Perikatan Nasional should think twice before doing so, according to academician Azmi Hassan.

Azmi said defecting MPs are likely to be punished at the next general election (GE15) for going against the wishes of their voters and party. “Especially those from Umno and PKR,” he told FMT.

He said Umno grassroot members were not likely to forgive MPs who stood shoulder to shoulder with Perikatan Nasional. “The same with MPs from PKR. They may not get voted in again for going against the wishes of the party,” he said.

He advised MPs to seek the mandate of their voters before making the jump. “Once their voters agree with the jump, they do not have to worry about being punished in the next GE as that is what the voters want,” he said.

Muhyiddin offered Tok Mat the DPM post, claims Ahmad Maslan
Posted by: superadmin - 08-10-2021, 09:01 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had previously offered the deputy prime minister’s post to Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan, the party’s secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said last night.

Speaking at an online talk show, Ahmad said the offer was turned down by Mohamad, who is widely known as Tok Mat. Ahmad said Mohamad wanted to abide by the Supreme Council’s decision to reject the post.

“It is true that he rejected it out of respect for decisions made by the party,” said Ahmad, without elaborating when the offer was made.

He also admitted that Umno had proposed last October that Muhyiddin give the deputy prime minister’s post to an Umno candidate, though this proposal fell on deaf ears.

Earth is warming faster than previously thought, scientists say, and the window is closing to avoid catastrophic outcomes

[Image: 200824025528-02-wildfires-0823-super-169.jpg]

(CNN)As the world battles historic droughts, landscape-altering wildfires and deadly floods, a landmark report from global scientists says the window is rapidly closing to cut our reliance on fossil fuels and avoid catastrophic changes that would transform life as we know it.

The state-of-the-science report from the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says the world has rapidly warmed 1.1 degrees Celsius higher than pre-industrial levels, and is now careening toward 1.5 degrees — a critical threshold that world leaders agreed warming should remain below to avoid worsening impacts.

Only by making deep cuts to greenhouse gas emissions, while also removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, can we halt the precipitous trend.

"Bottom line is that we have zero years left to avoid dangerous climate change, because it's here," Michael E. Mann, a lead author of the IPCC's 2001 report, told CNN.

Unlike previous assessments, Monday's report concludes it is "unequivocal" that humans have caused the climate crisis and confirms that "widespread and rapid changes" have already occurred, some of them irreversibly.

That is due in part to the breakneck pace at which the planet has been recently warming, faster than scientists have previously observed. Since 2018, when the panel published a special report on the significance of 1.5-degrees, greenhouse gas emissions have continued mostly unabated and have pushed global temperatures higher.

Even under the IPCC's most optimistic scenario, in which the world's emissions begin to drop sharply today and are reduced to net zero by 2050, global temperature will still peak above the 1.5-degree threshold before falling.

In a statement, UN Secretary-General António Guterres called the report "a code red for humanity," and noted the 1.5-degree threshold is "perilously close."

"The only way to prevent exceeding this threshold is by urgently stepping up our efforts, and pursuing the most ambitious path," Guterres said.
