Speak up! Action or no action by BN leaders accused of corruption by Zahid?
Posted by: superadmin - 10-13-2022, 04:08 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

WOULD the five Barisan Nasional (BN) component leaders take action against the coalition’s chairperson Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who alleged all five are on the ‘waiting list’ to be charged in court?

The famous five, UMNO deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, UMNO Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hussein, MCA President Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, MIC President Tan Sri S.A. Vigneswaran and MIC Deputy President M. Saravanan has not responded to Zahid’s allegation.

Are they intending to stay silent on a huge accusation such as this? Or will they speak up and defend themselves? With a looming election, and in order to be in the good books of the public, all five should say something if they wish to clear their name of Zahid’s allegations.

Zahid who is UMNO president previously said that there is not only an UMNO ‘Court Cluster’ but a BN ‘Court Cluster’ and named all the five politicians on the waiting list to be charged in court.

In responding to his remark, DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang hopes that an independent panel agreed by BN, Perikatan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan will decide if BN Chairperson Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi speech at the recent MIC general assembly was ‘spun’ as the latter claims so.

“He (Zahid) said he made clear in the speech that he was talking about political persecution and selective prosecution. That is the risk to BN leaders that I was referring to if our enemies win the 15th general election.” said Kit Siang quoting Zahid.

Strikes, possible blackouts and a plunging currency: Brits are being hit by a wave of bad news
  • The U.K. economy shrank by 0.3% in August, the Office for National Statistics estimated Wednesday, potentially beginning what economists expect will be a lengthy recession through the winter.
  • Postal workers, rail workers and public barristers have all carried out strikes in recent months in protest over pay and conditions, as wages fail to keep up with inflation running at around 10%.
  • A worst-case scenario laid out by national electricity system operator the National Grid warned that households and businesses may face three-hour power outages over winter.

LONDON — “The brains of humans and other animals contain a mechanism designed to give priority to bad news,” former Nobel Prize-winning economist Daniel Kahneman once said.

For Brits, this mechanism has been taking a beating in recent months.

The Bank of England this week added to its emergency rescue package for British pension funds, while the government brought forward its medium-term fiscal policy plan, having plunged the markets into chaos with its widely-criticized announcements last month.

A number of pension funds were hours from collapse when the central bank intervened on Sep. 28, and policymakers continue to battle against market volatility with further expansions of the bond-buying scheme on Monday and Tuesday.

The spike in interest rate expectations following new Finance Minister Kwasi Kwarteng’s so-called “mini-budget” also caused mayhem in the mortgage market, leading banks to withdraw products and rates to surge for prospective homeowners.

askST: What is the XBB strain and how will it affect me?
Posted by: superadmin - 10-13-2022, 02:27 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: ads-mask-121022.jpg?VersionId=cD2U6kTw2v...k=Vtb_6BT3]

SINGAPORE - Singapore is facing yet another iteration of the mutated coronavirus - the BA.2.10 strain, otherwise more commonly known as the XBB strain - that is largely driving the current surge in cases.

There were 11,732 new Covid-19 infections on Tuesday, more than double the 4,719 the day before.
The Straits Times takes a look at what you need to know about the strain.

Q: What is the XBB strain? Where has it been detected?
A:
XBB is another Omicron sub-variant.

It has been detected in countries such as Australia, Bangladesh, Denmark, India, Japan and the United States since August 2022.

Q: What is the proportion of XBB cases here?
A: Figures from the Ministry of Health show that XBB currently makes up 55 per cent of infections here.

Q: Is it more serious than other Omicron sub-variants?
A: Based on preliminary local data, it is not, the Health Ministry said. However, the authorities are watching the new sub-variant very closely.

The number of severe cases has remained relatively low here, MOH noted. This is very likely due to the resilience built up through vaccination and previous waves of infection. The large majority of patients continue to report mild symptoms such as sore throat or slight fever, especially if they have been vaccinated.

Q: Should I get a booster jab?
A: Getting a booster jab will be beneficial if you are eligible for it.
Additionally, the roll-out of the bivalent version of Moderna's Spikevax vaccine here has also been brought forward by three days to Friday because preparations for its introduction were completed ahead of time.
Those eligible should get themselves protected.
Moderna's Spikevax targets the original Sars-CoV-2 strain of the virus as well as the Omicron BA.1 variant.
Preliminary data show that the Moderna bivalent vaccine is also effective against the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 variants, and others such as the Delta and Gamma variants.
This updated bivalent vaccine will replace the current vaccine formulation for all adults aged 18 and above.

Q: Can I still be infected with the XBB strain if I have been vaccinated?
A:
Yes. However, vaccination confers good protection, especially against serious illness.

Q: Will this be the last variant that will emerge?
A:
No. As more people get infected with the coronavirus, this will lead to more replication of the virus, creating the opportunity for more mutations that could eventually lead to new variants.

Singapore has got better at coping with the new Covid-19 waves, but remains on the lookout for potentially threatening new variants.

Designating China a ‘threat’ will be ‘diplomatic failure’ for Truss, will backfire on UK
[Image: 1b8569a9-85e7-406b-a2dc-36e2e79f5e12.jpeg]

Formally designating China as a "threat," if eventually announced by the UK government, is seen by Chinese observers as a clear shift that London is abandoning its pragmatism and bowing to Washington's long-term pressure of being hostile toward Beijing. They also believe it would be a bad move and a "diplomatic failure" for the new Prime Minister Liz Truss, if being anti-China is a tactic to shore up her faltering premiership before the next election, as such a decision will strike a heavy blow to the UK's staggering economy and eventually further impinge on Truss's rule.

China is to be formally designated a "threat" to the UK in a rewrite of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson's defense and foreign policy, the Guardian reported on Tuesday. Under Johnson, China had been categorized as a "systemic competitor" but the UK media said it seems like Truss wants to take a more hawkish stance quickly.
