Scientists say it will take weeks to tell how dangerous Omicron really is. Here's why
Posted by: superadmin - 12-01-2021, 08:02 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

(CNN)As soon as South Africa announced the spread of a new and troubling variant last week, scientists went to work.

By the time the World Health Organization had named the new lineage Omicron, multiple teams of researchers had already duplicated the work of the laboratories in Durban and elsewhere, and mapped out the genetic changes that made Omicron the new bad actor of the coronavirus family.

Although many of those mutations were familiar from other variants, scientists still were not sure whether they make Omicron substantially different from previous variants -- especially the super-dominant Delta variant.

It will take weeks of testing to tell what added superpowers, if any, these mutations give Omicron.

Malaysia Cup: KL City dethrones JDT in final
Posted by: superadmin - 12-01-2021, 07:37 PM - Forum: Football - No Replies

[Image: Malaysia_Cup_KL_champion-KL_City_FC_Twitter.jpeg]

KUALA LUMPUR − Kuala Lumpur (KL) City FC produced a scintillating brand of counter-attacking football to stun favourites and defending champions Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) with a 2-0 score in the final of the prestigious Malaysia Cup and end their 32-year title drought at the national stadium in Bukit Jalil last night.

After absorbing everything thrown at them by the star-studded JDT, the City slickers tore the formbook to shreds when Zhafri Yahya and skipper Paulo Josue struck in the 66th and 74th minutes respectively to make sure of victory on a historic night.

The City Boys’ against-the-odds victory, which came on the 100th anniversary of the Malaysia Cup competition, also earned them a place in Asia’s secondary club football tournament − the AFC (Asian Football Confederation) Cup − next season.

KL City, who were known as Kuala Lumpur FA before the privatisation of Malaysia League (M-League) clubs, managed to bag a hattrick of Malaysia Cup wins during their heyday when they defeated Kedah in the final on all three occasions in 1987, 1988 and 1989.

With almost 20,000 fans watching from the stands, the first half saw the Southern Tigers launch a series of assaults on the KL City goalmouth but the City Boys managed to ward them off with some gutsy defending, desperate tackles and outstanding goalkeeping by Kevin Ray Mendoza.

‘Putrajaya, is it true only Malays can be IGPs?’
Posted by: superadmin - 12-01-2021, 06:28 PM - Forum: Stop Racism and Religious Bigotry - No Replies

[Image: m_kula_segaran_roketkini_pic_06082021.PNG]

KUALA LUMPUR – Former cabinet member M. Kula Segaran wants the current federal government to state its stand on whether only Malays can be appointed as Inspector-General of Police (IGP) under its helm.

This is after Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri M. Saravanan suggested during his ministry’s wind-up for Budget 2022 yesterday that non-Malays cannot become the head of the police force.

In a statement today, Kula Segaran said Saravanan’s remark in the Dewan Rakyat was dangerous, unfair, completely incorrect and misleading.

“Nowhere in the federal constitution is written what Saravanan has asserted in Parliament.

“In fact, even the position of prime minister is to be filled by any citizen of Malaysia as long as one has the majority support as an MP,” he said.

Kula Segaran said Saravanan should have instead highlighted that the proper criteria of appointing an IGP should be based on qualification and meritocracy.

“Is this what is being discussed in the cabinet? Will this be made policy if the Barisan Nasional (BN) government strengthens its grip on Putrajaya? Do the other races and other Bumiputeras in Sabah and Sarawak not matter when it comes to top jobs?

Why didn’t Thomas take action on Zeti-Jho Low link, says MP
Posted by: superadmin - 12-01-2021, 06:18 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Former Attorney-General (AG) Tommy Thomas has been asked to explain his failure to act against then Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) governor Zeti Akthar Aziz over the 1MDB scandal, when he claimed her involvement was “public knowledge”.

Klang MP Charles Santiago of DAP said there had always been questions about Zeti’s role in the scandal and that Thomas’s claim came as “no surprise”.

“The question that arises is why he (Thomas) did not act in the 20 months that he was the AG,” Santiago told FMT.

Teacher accused of rape jokes sues ex-student for defamation

Teresa Kok urges education minister to make stand clear after teacher accused of rape jokes sues ex-student

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 1 — Seputeh MP Teresa Kok is pushing the education minister to take an official stand on the case of a teacher who sued his former student for alleged defamation after she called him out for making light about rape.

The veteran lawmaker said she was appalled to read that the teacher, Khairul Nizam Sanuddin, had filed a defamation suit against teenager Ain Husniza Saiful Nizam, who highlighted his remarks about rape on her social media accounts.

“I think this is the first case in Malaysia where a male teacher has actually sued his student.

“The legal action by Khairul Nizam indicates that despite the media onslaught on his action, he is nonchalant and still feels what he did is proper. His legal action has made a mockery of the teaching profession in Malaysia,” Kok said in a statement last night.

These are the world's most expensive cities in 2021
Posted by: superadmin - 12-01-2021, 11:56 AM - Forum: Travels - No Replies

[Image: http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.cnn.com%2Fcnnnext%2Fdam...-osaka.jpg]

(CNN) — All over the world, it's been a tough year on wallets.

Supply-chain blockages and changing consumer demand have pushed up the cost of living in many of our biggest cities, according to new research published Wednesday, and inflation is the fastest recorded over the past five years.

One city has been experiencing more rapid change than most, jumping from fifth place to first in this year's Worldwide Cost of Living index released by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).

The Israeli city of Tel Aviv topped the rankings for the first time, overtaking last year's leader Paris, which is now tied in second place with Singapore.

The EIU attributes Tel Aviv's sharp rise on the index to increases to grocery and transport prices and the strength of the Israeli shekel against the US dollar.

Everyday goods and services

The 2021 Worldwide Cost of Living index tracks the cost of living across 173 global cities -- 40 more than last year -- and compares the price of more than 200 everyday products and services.

Data for the survey, which has been carried out for more than three decades, is gathered by EIU's global team of researchers each March and September.

The index is benchmarked against prices in New York City, hence cities with currencies that are stronger against the US dollar are likely to appear higher in the rankings.

Zurich and Hong Kong are at Nos. four and five respectively, having held the top spot last year alongside Paris. New York, Geneva, Copenhagen, Los Angeles and Osaka round up the rest of the top 10.

The upper rankings rankings continues to be dominated by European and developed Asian cities. The lowest-ranking cities are mainly in the Middle East, Africa and less wealthy parts of Asia.

3 dead, 8 injured in shooting at Michigan high school, undersheriff says
Posted by: superadmin - 12-01-2021, 11:47 AM - Forum: Stop the Wars and Terrorism - Replies (1)

[Image: 211130160340-01-oxford-school-shooting-1...ge-169.jpg]

(CNN)A 15-year-old boy is in custody after three students died and eight were injured in a shooting Tuesday afternoon at a high school in Oxford, Michigan, authorities said.

The Oxford High School students killed were a 16-year-old boy, a 14-year-old girl and a 17-year-old girl, Oakland County Undersheriff Michael G. McCabe said at a news conference.

Eight others were shot, one of whom is believed to be a teacher, McCabe said. Of the eight injured, two are currently in surgery and the other six are in stable condition with various gunshot wounds, McCabe said.

"I think this is every parent's worst nightmare," said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who added that shootings at schools are "a uniquely American problem that we need to address."

"My heart goes out to the families. This is an unimaginable tragedy. I hope we can all rise to the occasion and wrap our arms around the families, the affected children and school personnel and this community," Whitmer said.

The suspect, a sophomore at the school, was taken into custody without incident five minutes after authorities responded to the shooting, McCabe said. His parents have hired an attorney and have not permitted him to talk to police, McCabe said.

Proposal for PKR-Amanah merger submitted, but leaders haven’t deliberated: Anwar
Posted by: superadmin - 12-01-2021, 11:38 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 01122021-KUL-ANWAR_IBRAHIM_TINJAU_PASAR_...mar-11.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – A formal proposal on a merger of two Pakatan Harapan component parties – PKR and Amanah – has been submitted but their leaders have yet to put the matter up for discussion.

PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that any proposal for the good of the two parties is feasible but it will have to be deliberated upon.

However, Anwar said the merger idea has not been brought up for discussion although there are members who are talking about it openly.

When pressed whether there has been a formal proposal, he said: “Yes, yes it was submitted and it is in the knowledge of the leaderships of Keadilan (PKR) and Amanah. But we have not explored this further.”

Asked if the official deliberations between the two parties have started, he said: “Not yet, not yet. Some members are throwing around some ideas.”

“Whatever views that we hear, we will discuss. There is no problem,” he told reporters after visiting the morning market at Taman Bukit Angkasa, Kg Kerinchi in Lembah Pantai here.

Also present were his wife and former party president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil.

National reset tough because of ‘ketuanan’ elephant
Posted by: superadmin - 12-01-2021, 11:19 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 9d24ae3eb6c6993b7061eb5abd7a96e2.jpeg=s800]

MS: A veritable Gordian knot of socio-economic and political problems which have their roots in a toxic "master race-master religion" ideology will continue to slowly disable and kill the nation because the poison has leached into anything and everything considered Malaysian.

The latest ‘Keluarga Malaysia’ budget which unashamedly discriminates against the minorities offers the best evidence as to how blatant (and normalised) it has become - the tabling of which is not known to have raised as much as a muted whimper from the signatories of this proposal.

For all we know, they may well have (privately) felt some unease but given their status, they opted not to raise any dust by voicing anything that could come across as disapproval. If that were so, it would simply reconfirm their political acumen, their survival instincts and their ability to gloss over injustice and wrongdoing even when it happens right before their eyes.

But now that they have agreed to assemble, ostensibly to right the wrongs they witnessed, worked with, enabled and immensely profited from - ordinary Malaysians are supposed to heave a collective sigh of relief... Finally!

But personalities aside, something else is also troubling. The two euphemisms they have used in this proposal - "social contract" and "affirmative action" - are euphemisms which have been bandied about by bigoted politicians and their functionaries to justify and rationalise the imposition of unjust rules and laws which in turn have pushed the country into the hole it is in now.

By referring to those notions the way they did, are they in fact legitimising them and putting it out that no "reset" will in fact question them? I don't know... but it does appear to be so.

So, no. A "national reset" is not possible because the ‘ketuanan’ elephant prancing about the corridors in Putrajaya will remain unmentionable while those attempting to do so simply have not earned the reputation to do what is right even if it hurts them.

PKR, Amanah should consider merging as single party: Najwan
Posted by: superadmin - 11-30-2021, 08:04 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Najwan_Halimi-Najwan_Halimi_Twitter.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – The leadership of PKR and Amanah should consider proposals of becoming a single party, said former Selangor PKR Youth chief Najwan Halimi.

He said both parties had similar political directions in upholding reform agendas, social justice, as well as championing the rights and welfare of the common people.

“The entry of Amanah into PKR will surely help raise support and build the confidence of the people especially the Malays in rural areas, specifically in the bid to win their support in the upcoming general election,” Najwan said in a statement posted on social media.

“Through the merger, there will surely be a consolidated machinery for both parties at the grassroots level, while solving the issue of seat allocations that has all this while been a challenge to both parties.”
