  Tianjin fights China’s first real battle against Omicron, puts Beijing on high alert
Posted by: superadmin - 01-10-2022, 03:00 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

North China's Tianjin Municipality, home to 15 million people and also a major gateway to Beijing, started massive nucleic acid testing early Sunday morning, ramping up a swift response to the new Omicron variant after the city detected 20 COVID-19 infections in a single day, with two identified as carrying the new variant.

Epidemiologists said it's the first real battle against Omicron on the Chinese mainland as  domestically-transmitted cases linked to the strain were discovered in local communities for the first time. The sudden outbreak also put adjacent Beijing on alert, creating huge uncertainty and high possibility of a spillover as the source of the outbreak remains unknown. But epidemiologists assured that as long as rapid tracing of the origin of the new viral chain is conducted and effective measures are put in place, the outbreak is expected to be extinguished before China's Spring Festival and 2022 Winter Olympic Games, which are only few weeks away.

  Let PSC review Azam Baki’s fitness to continue as MACC chief – William Leong
Posted by: superadmin - 01-10-2022, 02:43 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 02112020-KUL-parliament_02-SYEDA.jpg]

THE Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) chairman on Agencies under the Prime Minister’s Department had instructed the secretary of the Dewan Rakyat to fix a date for holding an inquiry into the allegations relating to the share transactions by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Tan Sri Azam Baki.

The secretary made an error in judgement by writing to the minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) for consent to allow the PSC to hold the inquiry.

The PSC reports to Parliament and not to the ministers. Parliament acts as a check and balance to the executive arm of the government. Parliament does not need the executive’s permission to act. Parliament is not the handmaid nor the rubber stamp of the executive.

Since the letter has been sent, I call on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to not obstruct the PSC’s inquiry. The prime minister, as a member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Major Public Appointments (the predecessor of the present PSC), which I chaired, is well aware of the importance and functions of the PSC.

The PSC as a bipartisan committee that carries out a scrutiny function to ensure that fit and proper persons are appointed to major public office.

Although by a different coalition, the prime minister ought to not discard the following cabinet decisions:

Cabinet decision on August 13, 2018, that the appointment of the MACC chief commissioner is to be considered by the Parliamentary Select Committee, and the chief commissioner’s performance and competency to be evaluated by the PSC and outside stakeholders;

Cabinet decision on July 31, 2019 to approve the standard operating procedure (SOP) for the PSC’s consideration on the appointment of the chief commissioner as stated below:

The Malaysian Human Rights Commission;
The Election Commission;
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission;
The Judicial Appointments Commission; and

Such other major appointments as may be decided by the prime minister.

  • A researcher in Cyprus has discovered a strain of the coronavirus that combines the delta and omicron variant, Bloomberg News reported Saturday.
  • Leondios Kostrikis, professor of biological sciences at the University of Cyprus, called the strain “deltacron.”
  • It’s still too early to tell whether there are more cases of the strain or what impacts it could have.

A researcher in Cyprus has discovered a strain of the coronavirus that combines the delta and omicron variant, Bloomberg News reported on Saturday.

Leondios Kostrikis, professor of biological sciences at the University of Cyprus, called the strain “deltacron,” because of its omicron-like genetic signatures within the delta genomes, Bloomberg said.

So far, Kostrikis and his team have found 25 cases of the virus, according to the report. It’s still too early to tell whether there are more cases of the strain or what impacts it could have.

  ‘Last chance’ for PM to act over Azam issue, says Kit Siang
Posted by: superadmin - 01-10-2022, 12:01 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: lim-kit-siang-ismail-asbri-collage-040921-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob must get the Cabinet to terminate the services of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Azam Baki if he is not prepared to appear before a special select committee to clear allegations surrounding his ownership of corporate shares, DAP leader Lim Kit Siang said.

Lim said it would be Ismail’s “last chance” to salvage his position as the prime minister amid a backdrop of several issues faced by his government.

In a statement, he said the Cabinet should also decide to convene a special Parliament sitting on Jan 21 to restore public confidence in the government’s anti-corruption programme and to receive, debate and decide on any report the Special Select Committee on Agencies in the Prime Minister’s Department might make on the controversy.

Lim said Malaysia had suffered “two infamies” – the 1MDB scandal and former prime minister Najib Razak, who was convicted in the SRC International corruption case, opening an international conference.

“Let us not suffer a third infamy where the MACC chief loses all public confidence,” the Iskandar Puteri MP added.

  Warisan offers itself to those turned off by BN, PN, PH
Posted by: superadmin - 01-10-2022, 10:28 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: A Warisan leader has urged the people to give the party and its ally Muda a chance at the next general election, saying they can provide leadership that is lacking in the country.

“Malaysians are badly in need of a new hope, a new direction, a new choice especially for those who don’t want to vote Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH),” said Warisan vice-president Junz Wong.

Wong, a former state minister, said Malaysians in general still wanted changes but were no longer looking at PH, as shown by the results of the state elections in Melaka and Sarawak, where PH suffered huge losses.

“In Melaka, there was an almost 30% reduction in Chinese and Indian voter turnout, and even MCA and MIC managed to win seats. In Sarawak, we can see that even the Chinese community rejected the DAP. This tells us that the people are disappointed with PH,” he told FMT in a recent interview.

  Without a partner in sight, PBM’s prospects look dim
Posted by: superadmin - 01-10-2022, 10:19 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: LARRY_SOON_LARRY_SNG_WEI_SHIEN_PH_PKR_JU...122020.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Parti Bangsa Malaysia, the party led largely by ex-PKR figures, will struggle in the next general election as none of the “big three” coalitions is likely to welcome them into their fold, says a political analyst.

Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid of Universiti Sains Malaysia said reports of PBM’s wish to join Barisan Nasional was an “act of desperation” by those linked to former PKR leaders Azmin Ali and Zuraida Kamaruddin.

PBM president Larry Sng has since said it was a motion from delegates, and that the party leaders had yet to decide on the matter.

However, Ahmad Fauzi said non-Malay ex-PKR members who joined Bersatu with their Malay compatriots had faced a dilemma as Bersatu is Malay-centric and does not value multi-racialism highly in the context of internal party politics.

  Law minister under fire over defence of Azam
Posted by: superadmin - 01-09-2022, 06:54 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: R-Sivarasa-Wan-Junaidi-Tuanku-Jaafar.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has got his facts and law wrong in defending top graft-buster Azam Baki over his ownership of corporate shares, a PKR MP has claimed.

Sungai Buloh MP R Sivarasa told FMT that Wan Junaidi was wrong on the value of shares owned by Azam, as well as on the laws on share ownership by public servants.

Yesterday, Wan Junaidi said the shares owned by Azam were “not expensive” when they were acquired in 2016 — priced between 30 sen and 33 sen each — and that the one million units were valued at RM330,000 at the time.

However, Sivarasa said records show that shares and warrants were bought under Azam’s name between 2015 and 2016 in two public listed companies. This, he said, would have been worth some RM2 million.

For the record, Azam has said that he did not purchase the shares and that his brother had used his share account to purchase them.

  ‘We have your back, Azam’: MACC expresses support for its chief
Posted by: superadmin - 01-09-2022, 12:11 PM - Forum: Politics - Replies (1)

[Image: Azam_Baki_-_bernama_pic.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has thrown its backing to its embattled chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki amid allegations of impropriety involving the top dog.

In a memorandum of support issued this morning, the anti-graft body said the commission is united in defending the institution and its chief for the sake of its continued fight against corruption, and called for an immediate end to the ongoing imbroglio.

The statement was jointly signed by MACC’s three deputy chief commissioners – Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya (operations), Datuk Seri Norazlan Mohd Razali (prevention) and Datuk Junipah Wandi (management and professionalism).

“We represent the whole of MACC in stating our stand of supporting Azam’s leadership,” the statement read.

“We are of the view that the allegations and attacks made against him are motivated by the politics of revenge, to tarnish MACC’s image and reputation.

“We urge all quarters to stop the attacks and allow the due legal process to be carried out fairly, transparently and equitably.”
