PETALING JAYA: The Pakatan Harapan presidential council has urged Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to stop defending the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Azam Baki.

“Azam has gone from being an anti-corruption enforcer to a lawbreaker, and the prime minister must stop defending him,” it said in a statement today.

“His only option now is to take leave until investigations against him are complete,” it added.

US’ trade with China surges 28.7% in 2021

US’ trade with China surges 28.7% in 2021, but widening deficit proves tariffs ‘a failure’
[Image: 108bb331-7302-48b0-97db-1deabb7f691a.jpg]

Trade between China and the US soared by 28.7 percent and amounted to $755.6 billion in 2021 - maintaining a strong growth momentum and contributing 12 percent to China's record $6 trillion foreign trade for the year despite tariffs and bruising political tensions between the world's two largest economies.

The number, which comes just one day ahead of the second anniversary of the signing of the phase-one trade deal between China and the US, shows a strong complementarity between the world's two largest economies, while it is also a demonstration of China's goal to fulfill its commitments under the deal over the past two years, observers said.

According to Chinese Customs data released on Friday, China's exports to the US increased by 27.5 percent in 2021, while imports grew by 32.7 percent, reaching $179.53 billion.

Malaysia’s total approved investments surpass RM177 bil in 2021

[Image: YBhg_Dato_Arham_Abdul_Rahman__CEO_of_MIDA.JPG]

KUALA LUMPUR – One should be unperturbed if Malaysia is unable to beat its total approved investments garnered in 2021.

This is because the country is expected to post a stunning amount for its approved investments for last year.

Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) chief executive officer Datuk Arham Abdul Rahman said that the total, which will be announced on March 8, surpasses the performance of the past three years.

“Malaysia has displayed a strong resilience in the face of unprecedented challenges because the pandemic offered the country a unique opportunity,” he said.

Umno faction pushing for Johor polls ‘to put pressure on PM’
Posted by: superadmin - 01-15-2022, 09:45 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Early Johor state elections may be used to trigger a general election this year, according to political analyst Azmi Hassan, while another analyst, Awang Azman Pawi, is positive that a general election will be “done and dusted” by July.

Azmi, a former Universiti Teknologi Malaysia lecturer, said those in favour of an early general election are likely to go all out to press for Johor state elections soon as Barisan Nasional is likely to win more seats in the state.

They are aware that Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, an Umno vice-president, may only call for national elections in 2023, while he consolidates his power.

However, “the PM’s divided support and instability in Umno may see calls for a general election growing if BN does better in Johor,” he said.

The Johor state government, led by Barisan Nasional, has a majority of only one seat following the death of Kempas state assemblyman Osman Sapian of Bersatu in December.

DAP asks Terence Naidu for written report on drug incident
Posted by: superadmin - 01-15-2022, 09:40 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Perak state assemblyman Terence Naidu has been asked to submit a written report on his arrest for allegedly testing positive for illegal substances, says Perak DAP chairman Nga Kor Ming.

Nga said the Perak leadership and the DAP national leadership can then “be informed of the factual situation accordingly”.

In a statement this evening, he said DAP was serious about the conduct, character and integrity of its elected representatives “and that they should be exemplary in their ways” for having been entrusted by the people to lead them.

He said he had contacted Terence this evening and confirmed that he was arrested and detained by the police last night at a pub in Bandar Perai Jaya, Penang.

He was released on police bail today after the magistrates’ court denied a police application to hold him in remand for four days.

Let me live like everyone else, says woman raised by Chinese teacher
Posted by: superadmin - 01-15-2022, 09:35 AM - Forum: Inspiring Stories - No Replies

[Image: Chee-Loi-Han-and-Rohana-Abdullah-Metro.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: A Muslim woman who was singlehandedly raised by a Chinese kindergarten teacher is ruing the fact she is being punished for her parents’ mistake, by being deprived of Malaysian citizenship.

Rohana Abdullah said this included being forced to drop out of school because she did not have proper documents, Harian Metro reported.

At one point, Rohana said she endured severe anxiety and even attempted suicide to escape her troubles.

The only thing that stopped her from taking her life was the effect it could have on her adoptive mother, Chee Hoi Lan, 83, a single woman who has brought her up as a Muslim.

Rohana, 22, was two months old when she was abandoned by her Indonesian mother, a domestic worker at the kindergarten where Chee worked. “My father, a Malaysian, disappeared when I was little,” she said.

CJ says accused telling their side of story online won’t matter in court, evidence will talk

PUTRAJAYA, Jan 12 — A contempt proceeding can be initiated against those with court cases seen to be vilifying the judiciary, Chief Justice of Malaysia Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat said but admitted it is usually initiated very sparingly.

She also insisted that any accused’s attempt to paint a picture of their cases in press conferences or online will not matter in their court hearings, since the judiciary will decide based on pieces of evidence that have been presented there.

“It depends on the extent of the statements that they make,” she told reporters when asked about out-of-court statements on judgments made by accused persons.
