China's economic recovery gains pace in Oct with forecast-beating retail sales, industrial output data
![[Image: 8a20804e-4e38-43fa-97d2-a39f74aa7069.jpeg]](https://www.globaltimes.cn/Portals/0/attachment/2023/2023-11-10/8a20804e-4e38-43fa-97d2-a39f74aa7069.jpeg)
China on Wednesday reported better-than-expected retail sales and industrial data for October, underscoring that the world's second-largest economy has been "running on abundant steam" to maintain the strong recovery momentum through the year despite multiple impediments including subdued global demand, flared-up geopolitical tensions and a slowing property sector.
With a raft of fiscal and financial stimulus to bear more fruits and a tone-setting meeting that outlines top policy priorities for the coming months, Chinese observers predict that the country's GDP growth could reach 5 percent or above in the fourth quarter, depending on how the 1-trillion-yuan ($138 billion) special treasury bonds issuance could be executed in 2023 and 2024.
The upbeat economic readings indicate that China is on track to meet the annual GDP growth target of around 5 percent for 2023. It arguably also speaks volume for the prodigious role that China is set to play in the global economic axis this year, which analysts said would prickle every lie fabricated by Chinese doomsayers - ranging from the "economic collapse" rhetoric to the hype of "economic slump rippling across the globe."
In October, China's value-added industrial output increased by 4.6 percent year-on-year, beating market expectation of 4.3 percent, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Wednesday. The index is also higher than a reading of 4.5 percent in September.

Stop chasing rankings, boost quality of lecturers, universities told |

PETALING JAYA: Academics have urged local higher education institutions to improve the quality of their programmes and lecturers instead of chasing high university rankings, after Malaysia’s oldest institution of higher learning fell out of the top 10 in a prominent global index.
Former Malaysian Academic Movement secretary Rosli Mahat said universities had resorted to unethical research practices and spending large resources to boost their positions in global university rankings.
He claimed that universities were encouraging “citation padding” and “gifted and forced authorship” to increase their publication scores.
Citation padding is an attempt to legitimise one’s work by adding references to reputable papers. Gifted authorship refers to the crediting of individuals who did not contribute to the research for favour, while forced authorship refers to a situation where a student is coerced by his superior to share the credit even though the student did all the work.
“The current research does not look at (producing) new knowledge, but focuses on getting works published. They will consider: ‘How many papers can I produce from this project?’

Dr M did nothing to curb graft in Umno, says youth leader |

PETALING JAYA: An Umno leader has denounced Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s refusal to accept responsibility for the party’s “culture of bribery” as “hypocrisy”, saying the former Umno president did nothing to tackle the problem when in office.
Umno Youth permanent chairman Wan Agyl Wan Hassan said as president at the time, Mahathir had both “the power and the duty” to take all steps to combat corruption within the party.
“He was the one who controlled everything and could have put a stop to any wrongdoing,” he told FMT.
“You (Mahathir) were the head of the government and the party. You had the final say on all matters. So, if there was corruption in Umno then, you, as prime minister and party president, ought to have taken action,” said Wan Agyl.

YOURSAY | If not for DAP, Dr M wouldn't have been PM again |

GanMu: For a man of his stature, it is unacceptable for former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to say “I used DAP, they used me too”.
There was no such thing as who was using used who. DAP, PKR, Amanah, and Bersatu all came together voluntarily with a clear objective to face the election as one under Pakatan Harapan with the sole aim of winning the election.
This was an honourable coalition of respectable parties.
Mahathir, however, appears to have forgotten this and, as usual, is going after DAP.
Now that he has befriended PAS, DAP has become his new enemy. Very cunningly, he has left out PKR, Amanah, and Bersatu.
The more he runs down DAP, the stronger it will become. Although he talks about gratitude, I would like to think that he is an ungrateful man.
If not for DAP, including others, he would never have dreamed of becoming prime minister again.
Having been prime minister of a multi-racial country - a prime minister for all - for more than 20 years, there is still no feeling of compassion nor love for others. It is all about himself and what he can do to gain attention.
BlueFish0451: It is a lie that DAP used Mahathir. DAP and Harapan were there and fought every election, including the 14th general election.
Mahathir jumped out of a sinking ship to form Bersatu and took advantage of Harapan by joining forces with them and reaching an understanding to hand over power to PKR president Anwar Ibrahim later.
After winning the election, Mahathir became the prime minister and his small and new party took most of the cabinet seats while others nicely allowed him the prerogative.
Mahathir planned the Sheraton Move to stop the demand to honour the handover of the prime ministership to Anwar.
The Harapan government collapsed as a result. Even though Muhyiddin Yassin took over the prime minister’s position, to this day, no one is certain whether he snatched it from Mahathir or that was all part of the scheme.
Mahathir’s sudden resignation also remains a question mark.

PETALING JAYA: Former law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has told Perikatan Nasional not to blame anyone over the anti-hopping law, saying the so-called flaws in the legislation were known and accepted by all parties when the bill was passed.
Wan Junaidi said when the bill was drafted, he had insisted on including a clause that MPs would automatically vacate their seat if they were to go against the stand of their respective parties in the Dewan Rakyat.
However, the clause was rejected by PN, the opposition coalition, causing the clause to be dropped from the bill when it was tabled in the Dewan Rakyat, he was quoted by Astro Awani as saying.
Last week, Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin described the anti-hopping law as flawed as it lacked provision for action against MPs who went against their party’s stand. He called for a review of the law, saying it contained critical weaknesses that could be exploited.

Can we expect a good government out of the PAS, Bersatu alliance? |

JUST barely a year ago, most of the Cabinet ministers in the unity government, including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (PMX), Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook and Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu were in the Opposition camp.
Most of them from Pakatan Harapan (PH) have been in the Opposition for many decades.
Now, the Opposition comprises of Perikatan Nasional (PN) lawmakers, mainly from Bersatu and PAS although non-Malay Gerakan is also part of the PN set-up.
By observing the passion that drives the Opposition members, it is possible to know whether they would eventually make good cabinet ministers when they form a new government.
