Having spent so many years being incarcerated for reasons best known to Dr Mahathir Mohamad and the motley crew of his successors, Anwar Ibrahim finally became prime minister exactly a year ago, today – this, too, after a series of twists and only after our king stepped in.
Because of the inconclusive results of the last general election, and without a clear mandate, the prime minister had to reach out to his political rivals and do some horse-trading before he got appointed to the top job.
It was only after Umno (read: Ahmad Zahid Hamidi) finally backed him that the powerful East Malaysia bloc joined in and gave the prime minister the majority he needed to be appointed to the country’s top job.
From 1998 when he first got the boot as the deputy prime minister, to launching the “reformasi” movement, to forming his multiracial PKR party, and then being sent to prison on two occasions, our current prime minister stood head and shoulders above all the other Malaysian politicians for his reform agenda.

PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional is still trying to woo Umno leaders who opposed the party’s alliance with their one-time rivals in the unity government, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said.
“We are still trying to persuade them (Umno leaders), as not all of them back PH (Pakatan Harapan),” Hadi said.
Umno, the Barisan Nasional lynchpin, had rejected any cooperation with PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim and DAP before the 15th general election last November.
However, it decided to join forces with them in the unity government, with Anwar as the prime minister, after a hung parliament.
At a ceramah in Kemaman last night, Hadi, who is also PN’s deputy chairman, said Terengganu menteri besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar was named PN’s candidate for the by-election as part of the coalition’s goal to form the next federal government.

“WE rather remain single and have a good life than get involved with an irresponsible, useless man.”
This was the response from several women who spoke to The Vibes following the statement from PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man that the high number of unmarried women in the country was “cause for concern” and that polygamy was a “way out”.
The PAS lawmaker made this statement in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday, drawing criticism from female MPs, including Hannah Yeoh and Yeo Bee Yin.
“There is nothing wrong with being single. Women these days rather pursue their careers and live a happy, carefree life, indulging in the finer things like dining and travelling.
“We certainly do not feel lonely and there is no reason for us to be the second or third wife to anybody,” said Noraini, 36, who is a lecturer at a private college in Kuala Lumpur.
She said she was offended by Tuan Ibrahim’s statement and described him as “someone who lives in a cave”.

Isn’t it ridiculous to expect Anwar to perform miracle within one year or should he? |

IN THREE days’ time (Nov 24), Malaysia’s 10th Prime Minister (PMX) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will clock his first anniversary or 20% of his term in office (assuming that there is no repeat of any untoward conspiracy to overthrow the government of the day).
With all the political and socio-economic challenges faced by the unity government in recent times, the key question now is whether it is justified for Malaysians – whether they voted for him or otherwise – to demand the fruits of reforms from him within the short spell of 365 days.
At a glance, given the depth of the rot that Malaysia has endured over the span of 66 years since Merdeka, the task is humongous. It took Indonesia 25 years after the collapse of President Suharto’s government before they see the country moving ahead.
Such is the length of time that Anwar has waited to become Malaysia’s PM. Do we dare to therefore expect anyone – be it Anwar or any other PM – to deliver the outcome within just one year? Dream on!
Sure, the initial excitement is over, and people have come to grip with reality. It is not surprising that people start to doubt if Anwar can deliver his reforms, especially given the narrative of the propagated propelled by his enemies. Politics is after all a game of perception and psychological warfare.
A recent HarakahDaily article highlighted that PAS will be producing a report card for the Madani government. Most Malaysians would not give credence to PAS’ own report card but to the Islamist party’s leadership, this is an essential tool to keep its supporters in the PAS fold.

Accepting support from Bersatu defectors could open door to massive political instability
![[Image: harapan-ppbm-bersatu-logo-131022-1.jpg]](https://media.freemalaysiatoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/harapan-ppbm-bersatu-logo-131022-1.jpg)
THE decision by the Pakatan Harapan (PH) leadership to accept all the four Bersatu MPs who have begun to support the unity government by way of a loophole in the anti-party hopping law is fraught with danger and could even lead to a Sheraton 2.0 move.
The anti-party hopping law which was rushed through the legislature has a number of loopholes, one of which can be manipulated by the defecting MPs under the guise of wanting parliamentary allocations for their constituents to go against their own party.
This could even turn out to be a trap by the opposition Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition to test the effectiveness of the anti-hopping legislation.
If these four MPs can now support the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim administration, why can’t it also be vice-versa?
The unity government is still holding on to a two thirds majority even though MUDA MP Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman’s refusal to render support meant that there is currently one seat short of a two thirds majority.
Having been convicted on corruption charges recently, the Muar MP is definitely not going to support the unity government any longer and may even hope that PN will capitalise on the void.
Even then, there is no valid reason to invite trouble by admitting Bersatu Party MPs to shore up the already overwhelming support for the unity government.

Bersih chairman resigns after his team loses badly in steering committee poll |

ACTIVIST Thomas Fann has attributed his resignation as chairman of Bersih to what he perceives as a vote of no-confidence by the reform group’s endorsing NGOs to his aspiration to elevate Bersih from a people's movement to a “people’s institution”.
Fann had won the seat uncontested for another term in the steering committee polls just ten days ago.
He said he has had time to reflect, and it is clear to him that his leadership and efforts to evolve Bersih into a “people’s institution” were rejected by the majority of the endorsing NGOs of Bersih.
In a letter to the steering committee and endorsing NGOs today, he noted that the five contested positions of deputy chair, treasurer and three committee member posts were won by all four candidates led by Wong Yan Ke, who stood against the team that Fann had put forward.
