EC must be free of executive, party influence, says Perak ruler
Posted by: superadmin - 03-21-2022, 02:37 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, has called for a “free and fair” election process.

He said while voting is the responsibility of the public, they must be assisted by the Election Commission (EC).

“The EC must maintain its impartiality and transparency whenever an election is conducted.

“It must remain an independent body free of executive or party influence to ensure a free and fair election,” he said when launching a book, ‘Pilihan Raya Demokrasi Malaysia: Tanding, Pilih, Menang, Tadbir’, co-authored by former EC chairman Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman.

Sultan Nazrin said it is important the EC instils public belief to ensure voters are confident in casting their ballots.

To encourage voting, he said, the public must be confident that the process is free from interference and tampering and have a complete understanding of politics.

Gobind Singh tallies most votes at DAP committee polls
Posted by: superadmin - 03-20-2022, 08:49 PM - Forum: Politics - Replies (7)

SHAH ALAM – Gobind Singh Deo garnered the highest number of votes during the DAP central executive committee elections (CEC) here this evening.

Despite gaining 1,782 votes out of 2,179 ballots, the Puchong MP is not guaranteed the secretary-general post as it is likely to go to Anthony Loke Siew Fook, who ranked third with 1,625 votes.

This is due to an understanding between party leaders that the reigns of the party will be helmed by the former transport minister.

While Gobind topped the list, outgoing secretary-general Lim Guan Eng had placed eighth among the top 30 CEC members with 1,311 votes.

Lim was behind Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim, Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun, and Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, among others.

US hegemony: the culprit of Ukraine crisis
Posted by: superadmin - 03-20-2022, 06:39 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: a808ab23-c712-444f-bcfa-53145b638650.jpeg]

"Let the gull'd fool the toils of war pursue, where bleed the many to enrich the few," wrote the 18th-century English poet William Shenstone.

That is what is exactly happening during the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Whether it's the people of war-torn Ukraine, sanction-ridden Russia, or insecurity-ingrained Europe, all have suffered greatly. The US, the culprit of the Ukraine crisis, has been constantly taking advantage of others' misfortune to maintain its hegemony.

Every why has a wherefore. Edward Carr, a leading British scholar of international relations, reminded people more than 80 years ago that the US was a master in using kindness to disguise selfishness. Boasting abundant resources, strong industry and geographical advantage, Ukraine could have achieved development. While the country pursued a relatively balanced policy in the early years of its independence, the US supported and incited the Orange Revolution in 2004 and the Square Revolution in 2014 to push for a pro-Western agenda, splitting Ukraine politically from within and geopolitically between Russia and Europe. It is really thought-provoking that the "Gateway to Europe" has become one of the poorest countries in Europe, the frontline of NATO's eastward expansion, and the fault line of "color revolutions" and conflicts.

Thanks to 10 passersby, Taiwanese woman gets back RM75,000 she lost after dropping backpack while on scooter

KUALA LUMPUR, March 18 ― A Taiwanese woman, who initially lost NT$510,000 (RM75,731) on a Taipei street after dropping her backpack, managed to get the money back thanks to 10 passersby.

The woman, identified by her surname Zhuo, had borrowed NT$500,000 (RM74,246) from friends to start an eatery shop.

The 42-year-old, however, unknowingly dropped her backpack containing the borrowed NT$500,000, her own NT$10,000 (RM1,485), debit cards, and identification documents while riding her scooter at the New Taipei Boulevard in Xinzhuang district on Tuesday evening.

To make matters worse, the money was scattered on the road as the backpack was not properly zipped up, Taiwan News reported.

Antarctica records exceptionally high temperatures: experts

PARIS – Eastern Antarctica has recorded exceptionally high temperatures this week, more than 30°C above normal, said experts.

The Concordia research base at Dome C of the Antarctic, which is at an altitude of 3,000 metres (9,800 feet), on Friday registered a record -11.5°C (11.3 Fahrenheit), Etienne Kapikian, a meteorologist from France-Meteo tweeted.

Normally, temperatures fall with the end of the southern summer, but the Dumont d’Urville station on Antarctica registered record temperatures for March with 4.9°C (40.82F), at a time of year when normally temperatures are already sub-zero.

Gaetan Heymes of France Meteo described the unseasonably mild weather as a “historic event”.

And geoscientist Jonathan Wille wrote on Twitter: “And there it is, Concordia broke its all time record temperature by 1.5°C.

Things you should know about the famous MoU – Charles CJ Chow
Posted by: superadmin - 03-20-2022, 05:15 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 20210210-handshake-business-hiring-pixabay.jpg]

HERE are things that you should know about the famous memorandum of understanding (MoU) made between the federal government and Pakatan Harapan on September 13, 2021.

First, the MoU does not expire on July 31, 2022. It is in force until Parliament is dissolved. Clause 2.1 of the MoU states: “Terpakai sehingga pembubaran Parlimen Malaysia yang ke-14.”

Currently, the date of dissolution is not known. It can be any date between now and May 2023.

The government merely agreed that it shall not dissolve Parliament before July 31, 2022. After that date, if it decides not to dissolve Parliament, the MoU will still continue to be in force.

Hence if the MoU does not expire on July 31, 2022, then there is no question of extension, as mentioned by some people. It subsists for the life of the current Parliament or until it is repudiated.

Now let’s look at the other terms of this agreement.
The government wanted only two promises from Harapan:
(i) Harapan will support the Budget 2022 and supply bills; and
(ii) Harapan will prevent a no-confidence vote.

In other words, keep the government in power and give it the money to spend.

Rise again: outgoing chairman calls on DAP to learn from losing Johor polls
Posted by: superadmin - 03-20-2022, 01:13 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

SHAH ALAM – Outgoing DAP chairman Tan Kok Wai has characterised the Pakatan Harapan coalition’s crushing defeat in the Johor state election on March 12 as a minor setback that can be easily be overcome in the future.

Addressing the DAP national congress at the IDCC Convention Centre in Shah Alam today, he pointed to the party’s failure in winning any seats in Johor in the elections of 1995, 1999 and 2004 while only landing one seat in Penang each time.

“What is important is that we learn from these defeats and rise again,” said Tan, who is Cheras MP and a former special envoy to China under the PH government from 2018 to 2020.

He praised the coalition as being a model of political cooperation and a defender of the people’s welfare.

He added that while Barisan Nasional (BN) might be attempting to ride on the momentum of its landslide victories in the Melaka election in November and the Johor polls by pushing for an early general election, PH will not be rolling over in submission any time soon.

“In facing the challenges posed by the 15th general election (GE15), we must show BN that we will not cave in, because we believe that justice and success belong to those who fight for the truth and betterment of the people.”

MoU is ‘finished’ if anti-hopping law not tabled as promised, says Guan Eng
Posted by: superadmin - 03-20-2022, 01:06 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

SHAH ALAM: The memorandum of understanding (MoU) that Pakatan Harapan (PH) signed with the federal government last September will be “finished and ended” if the anti-hopping law is not tabled as promised, says DAP’s outgoing secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.

PH had insisted that the government enact an anti-hopping law by this month to stop defections that Lim said had “contaminated the entire democratic process”.

However, law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said on Friday that the Cabinet had decided that the bill on the proposed law required “further deliberation” with stakeholders from Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional to ensure it could get sufficient support in the Dewan Rakyat.

After 56 years, Kit Siang quits politics
Posted by: superadmin - 03-20-2022, 01:00 PM - Forum: Politics - Replies (2)

SHAH ALAM: DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang announced that he was quitting politics for good at the party’s national congress held here today.

Lim, 81, said he is withdrawing from the race for a seat in the central executive committee (CEC) at today’s election.

Lim had been in the CEC since 1966 when he began as a national organising secretary, and subsequently went on to hold the powerful secretary-general’s post for 30 years from 1969.

“I announce my retirement from politics and I also withdraw from contesting (for a place) in the CEC,” he said. “I will also not compete in any general or state elections in the future.”
