Decide on Melaka quickly, Azmin tells Umno
Posted by: superadmin - 10-24-2021, 05:37 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

ALOR GAJAH: With certain Umno leaders making contradictory statements on the party’s cooperation with Perikatan Nasional (PN) in the Melaka polls, Azmin Ali has asked the party to decide quickly so that they can proceed with their election planning.

Azmin claimed that he had received information that certain Umno leaders and grassroots members were keen to cooperate with PN in the Melaka state election scheduled for Nov 20, adding that the coalition had not shut its doors to negotiating with the party.

“But this is an internal problem of Umno in which we should not interfere. The party needs to make a final decision on whether it wants to cooperate or not.

“Let the people judge which party is rejecting unity and which one is for establishing cooperation for the sake of stability in the state and country,” Bernama reported the PN election director as saying after attending a meeting with the Masjid Tanah PN polls team here.

On Oct 22, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had said the party was sticking to its decision not to cooperate with Bersatu in any election.

Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan, however, said it is still not too late for the party to establish cooperation with any party for the election, adding that the Supreme Council will make a final decision at its meeting on Thursday.

MP SPEAKS | How was RM100m in Mitra allocation spent?
Posted by: superadmin - 10-24-2021, 12:56 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

By Kasthuri Patto

MP SPEAKS | With only five days to go before Budget 2022, the national unity minister must make all Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra) applications, approvals and fund transfers involving the RM100 million government allocation for it a public document.

This is for transparency, accountability and checks and balances for all Malaysians including MPs in Parliament.

As Malaysians wait in anticipation for the budget announcement on Oct 29 by the finance minister, there is a growing concern if all of the 2021 allocations totalling RM322.5 billion had been spent wisely and did it indeed reach all target groups it was aiming for, or for reasons not made known, not used and returned to the government.

Truth Social could provide Trump with infusion of cash -- but critics are concerned

Truth Social could provide Trump with infusion of cash -- but critics are concerned about its content
[Image: donald-trump_hpMain_20211020-202320_16x9_992.jpg]

Truth Social, the social media app announced Wednesday by former President Donald Trump, could provide the former president with a substantial infusion of cash -- but critics also warn that it could create a new platform for the spread of misinformation.

The app will be the first product of Trump's new company, Trump Media and Technology Group, which is merging with the Nasdaq-listed Digital World Acquisition Group to form a publicly traded company, the former president announced.

The announcement comes at a time of turmoil for Trump's family business, with multiple branches of the Trump Organization currently under criminal investigation, sources previously told ABC News. On Wednesday, it was reported that the Westchester, New York, district attorney's office has had an ongoing criminal investigation into the Trump Organization's Westchester golf course; in July, the Manhattan DA charged the Trump Organization and its longtime CFO, Allen Weisselberg, with tax fraud; and New York Attorney General Letitia James has been conducting a parallel probe into Trump's business dealings.

Trump has denied all wrongdoing in the investigations, calling James' investigation and the investigation into his Westchester golf course a "witch hunt."

Revival of TSGP: do Sabah’s east coast districts need it?
Posted by: superadmin - 10-24-2021, 11:01 AM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

SANDAKAN – As the government revives the Trans-Sabah Gas Pipeline (TSGP) project, which aims to distribute gas from the Kimanis district in the state’s west coast to the east coast districts of Sandakan and Tawau, a more important question is being raised – do the east coast districts need it?

The RM4 billion pipeline was slated to supply gas to Sandakan and Tawau, which would then be generated into electricity supply to districts in the area.

Currently, the electricity supply in Sabah’s east coast districts is generated from major power generators in the west coast.

About 10 years ago, people in Sandakan would not be too upset whenever there is a power cut as it happened so often – about once every two weeks. At that time, they had practically adapted to the situation.

For instance, in January 2014, when there was a problem with power generators in Sabah, the whole state was without power for a whole day.

The media reported the challenges faced by the people on that day, but there was an obvious difference between the people in Kota Kinabalu and those in Sandakan.

Report: PAS deputy president moots six-14-eight formula to win Melaka with Umno and Bersatu
[Image: Mohd_Amar_Nik_Abdullah_23032021.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 24 — PAS deputy president Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah has proposed a formula for his party, Umno and ally Bersatu that he says will provide the best outcome in next month’s Melaka election and avoid a conflict of interest.

He said Umno should contest in 14 seats and let PAS run in six seats and Bersatu take the remaining eight out of the 28-seats in the state legislative assembly, Mingguan Malaysia reported today.

The Kelantan lawmaker claimed this formula will help the three parties avoid fighting against each other for the same seats and allow them the best possible way to victory in the upcoming Melak state polls.

Top oil exporter Saudi Arabia targets zero carbon emissions by 2060
Posted by: superadmin - 10-24-2021, 09:33 AM - Forum: Environment Protection News - No Replies

RIYADH – Top crude exporter Saudi Arabia will aim to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2060, its de facto ruler said yesterday, days before the COP26 global climate summit.

The kingdom, one of the world’s biggest polluters, said it would also join a global effort to cut methane emissions by 30% by 2030.

The UN says more than 130 countries have set or are considering a target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050, an objective it says is “imperative” to safeguard a liveable climate.

“I announce today Saudi Arabia’s target to reach net zero emissions by 2060,” Crown Prince Mohammed Salman told the Saudi Green Initiative forum.

“I am pleased to launch initiatives in the energy sector that will reduce carbon emissions by 278 million tonnes annually by 2030, thus voluntarily more than doubling the target announced,” Prince Mohammed said.

“We also announce the kingdom’s accession to the Global Methane Pledge.”

A statement said Saudi Arabia would “contribute to cutting global methane emissions by 30% by 2030, as part of its commitment to deliver a cleaner, greener future”.

The 2060 target would “enable us to have a smooth and viable transition, without risking economic or social impacts”, Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz Salman said.

COP26 President Alok Sharma welcomed the announcement.

“I hope this landmark announcement... will galvanise ambition from others ahead of #COP26,” Sharma tweeted, adding he was looking forward to seeing more details on the Saudi plan.

Lim Kit Siang, a bright man who dropped out to marry his sweetheart at 19
Posted by: superadmin - 10-24-2021, 09:16 AM - Forum: Politics - Replies (1)

PETALING JAYA: Well known as a fearless opposition leader for decades, Lim Kit Siang started early in going against the grain.

At 17, he scored 5As in his Cambridge School Certificate of Education examination (or Senior Cambridge as it was otherwise known). He was among a handful in the country to have achieved this.

He went on to pass the Form Six entrance examination, a prerequisite then to enter pre-university class, with flying colours. He was then admitted to the prestigious English College in Johor Bahru.

At 19, he was a top student with the world at his feet. Or so it seemed. Two months into his Form Six, Lim abruptly stopped school to marry his sweetheart – a shy classmate who he befriended at his night tuition class.

His parents were aghast and made their anger plain, but Lim stuck to his guns, ignoring his family’s pleas not to quit school and “throw away” a bright future.

PAS, Bersatu wanted more than 4 seats in Melaka, says Nazri
Posted by: superadmin - 10-24-2021, 09:10 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: dewan-undangan-negeri-melaka-dun-melaka-...0621-3.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Bersatu and PAS should have been thankful that Umno was willing to allow them to contest in four state seats in the coming Melaka state election, according to former Umno Supreme Council member Nazri Aziz.

He said he was informed that, in preliminary discussions between Umno, PAS and Bersatu, the two Perikatan Nasional (PN) component parties had disagreed with his party’s proposal that they contest four state seats.

Nazri, a former Barisan Nasional (BN) secretary-general, said Bersatu and PAS cannot blame Umno if his party decides to go solo, adding that the offer extended to them was “fair” and “considerate”.

“I was made to understand that Umno was willing to hand over two seats to Bersatu and two more to PAS, but Bersatu turned it down because they wanted more.

“Since both parties are weak in Melaka, with Bersatu having nearly no grassroots in the state, they should have been grateful that Umno was still willing to give them four seats to avoid any three-cornered fights.

5 questions about the Sinovac Covid-19 vaccine answered
Posted by: superadmin - 10-23-2021, 08:09 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: yq-sinovac-23102021_0.jpg?itok=8SJyL8sf&...1634982174]

SINGAPORE - The Sinovac Covid-19 vaccine will be included in the national vaccination programme to cater to individuals aged 18 years and above who are unable or unwilling to take the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna mRNA vaccines.

The Ministry of Health said that three doses of the Sinovac vaccine will be required for a person to be considered fully vaccinated.

The second dose should be taken 28 days after the first dose, while the third dose should be taken 90 days after the second dose.

The Health Sciences Authority's (HSA) said it conducted a careful and thorough review taking into account the public health needs in Singapore of having non-mRNA vaccines as an option for individuals who are medically unsuitable to receive mRNA vaccines.

Here are some frequently asked questions on the Sinovac vaccine.

Q: What is the efficacy of Sinovac?
A: Vaccine efficacy is the degree to which a vaccine prevents a disease under controlled conditions in a clinical trial.

A study conducted in Brazil demonstrated vaccine efficacy of 51 per cent against non-Delta variants, which meets the threshold of 50 per cent set by the World Health Organisation (WHO) for Emergency Use Listing. This means that there is a 51 per cent reduction of symptomatic Covid-19 disease in a vaccinated group of people as compared with a similarly sized group of unvaccinated people.

The HSA's clinical review was based primarily on this data.

The authority also reviewed data from pre-clinical studies, clinical trials in human volunteers, manufacturing and quality controls, as well as supplemental data from a real-world effectiveness study in Chile.

The study in Chile involved more than 10 million participants aged 16 years and above.

As at May this year, Sinovac demonstrated vaccine effectiveness of 66 per cent against the Alpha and Gamma variants, according to the study.

The study also showed that Sinovac offered more than 86 per cent protection against other Covid-19 disease outcomes such as hospitalisation, admission to the intensive care unit and death.

There is a lack of data on the vaccine's protection against the Delta variant, as well as its effectiveness in immunocompromised patients and persons with co-morbidities such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancers.
