Wrong to think battle for votes in Melaka won’t affect Putrajaya, says Ramasamy
Posted by: superadmin - 10-26-2021, 10:57 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: A DAP leader has disagreed with an analyst that the electoral feud between Umno and Bersatu at the Melaka state election next month would not affect the federal government.

Reacting to the opinion of Oh Ei Sun, of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs, that the memorandum of understanding between the prime minister and Pakatan Harapan (PH) will protect the federal government from the electoral feud, Penang deputy chief minister P Ramasamy said the MoU was not meant to strengthen the government.

Ramasamy described the assumption that the contest in the state might not affect relations at the federal level as “naive” and “simplistic”.

“The ties between Bersatu and Umno have been considerably strained over the last few months. The Melaka state election might just be the barometer the parties need in preparation for the general election next year,” he said in a Facebook post.

Oh had said it would be “business as usual” in Putrajaya even if Bersatu and Umno were to go their own way and clash in the state election.

Better a clean multiracial govt than a corrupt Malay-Muslim one, says Idris
Posted by: superadmin - 10-26-2021, 10:37 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

MELAKA: Former Melaka chief minister Idris Haron says the state would be better off under a multiracial and clean administration rather than a Malay-Muslim state government that was corrupt and incompetent.

In an interview with FMT, the former Sungai Udang assemblyman noted that the previous Barisan Nasional-led government had been touted as the first Malay-Muslim state government in Melaka.

“Yes, they’re Malay and Muslim, but what choice do we have?” he said.

“On the one hand, a government that claims to be Malay-Muslim but is rotten, corrupted, incompetent, (subject to external) interventions, which discriminates, among other traits.

“On the other hand, a government of various backgrounds which possesses racial unity, that is more Islamic and capable of ensuring the welfare of the people of Melaka.”

Israeli helicopters said to strike Hezbollah-linked targets in southern Syria
Posted by: superadmin - 10-25-2021, 03:51 PM - Forum: Stop the Wars and Terrorism - No Replies

Israeli helicopters hit three targets in Syria near the border in the early hours of Monday, Syrian media reported.

According to the reports, the missiles struck targets connected to the Hezbollah terror group on the outskirts of the town of al-Baath as well as other locations in southern Syria.

The three sites were all reportedly connected to Hezbollah’s so-called Golan File, its efforts to establish a front along the Golan border from which it can carry out attacks against Israel.

GT Voice: Chipmakers risk violating Chinese laws over US’ hegemonic data request
Posted by: superadmin - 10-25-2021, 03:24 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

The US government appears to be close to gaining access to sensitive data held by major global chip suppliers including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC). The move has not only gone beyond normal market regulation, but may also plunge the semiconductor industry into a new round of geopolitical backbiting amid ongoing China-US tensions.

TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker, said on Friday that it would hand over data requested by the US by November 8, according to local Taiwan media reports.

The chipmaker's statement came just one day after a US official hinted at compulsory measures aimed at obtaining sensitive information from uncooperative companies. "Whether or not we have to use compulsory measures depends on how many companies engage and the quality of the data shared," a spokesperson for the US Commerce Department was quoted as saying according to Reuters.

Latest COVID-19 resurgence triggered by new imported Delta variant source
Posted by: superadmin - 10-25-2021, 03:17 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: 7f9a12bc-e3b6-4f6b-8fba-01ddce850fb0.jpeg]

The latest COVID-19 resurgence, which has spread into 11 Chinese provinces in just one week, was triggered by a new imported source identified as being of the Delta variant, according to officials from China's top health authority. Some Chinese epidemiologists see the current sporadic outbreaks hit the largest scale since the epidemic flare-up in Nanjing in late July that was the worst since the 2020 outbreak in Wuhan, Hubei Province.

However, if anti-epidemic measures are effectively implemented and loopholes are fixed, the latest outbreaks can be brought under control within one month, a veteran expert said.

Of the 133 infections reported over the past week, 106 cases were found to be related to tourist activities involving a total of 13 tour groups or self-driving tours, Wu Liangyou, deputy director of the National Health Commission (NHC) disease control bureau, told a briefing on Sunday.

China is pushing to develop its own chips — but the can’t do without foreign tech

China is pushing to develop its own chips — but the country can’t do without foreign tech
  • Chinese technology giants from Alibaba to Baidu have been designing their own chips, a move seen as progress towards China’s goal to boost its domestic capabilities in a critical technology.
  • In reality, China is still a long way off even if it’s one step closer to self-sufficiency, says one expert, adding that the country is still heavily dependent on foreign technology and lagging in the so-called leading edge part of the chip market.
  • China’s reliance on foreign companies in the semiconductor supply chain could make domestic firms vulnerable to any geopolitical tensions as has been the case with both Huawei and SMIC.

GUANGZHOU, China — China’s technology giants have been pushing to develop their own semiconductors or chips, a move seen as progress toward China’s goal to become self-reliant in the critical technology.

In reality, China is still a long way off even if it’s one step closer to self-sufficiency, according to one expert, adding that the country is still heavily dependent on foreign technology and lagging in the so-called leading edge part of the chip market.

Semiconductors are key components in everything from smartphones to modern refrigerators to cars. They’ve also become a key focus of the broader technology battle between the U.S. and China.

The world’s second-largest economy has for years invested heavily into boosting its domestic chip industry, but it has struggled to catch up with rivals in the U.S. and other parts of Asia. Increasingly, semiconductors are seen as key to national security for many countries and a sign of technological prowess.

There’s been a slew of announcements from major Chinese technology companies this year regarding chips made in China.

In August, Baidu launched Kunlun 2, its second-generation artificial intelligence chip. This week, Alibaba released a chip designed for servers and cloud computing. Smartphone maker Oppo is also developing its own high-end processors for its handsets, the Nikkei reported on Wednesday.

3 doses of Sinovac is better than mixing with Pfizer: Turkish minister
Posted by: superadmin - 10-25-2021, 02:36 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: https%253A%252F%252Fs3-ap-northeast-1.am...ce=nar-cms]

ISTANBUL -- A Turkish study of more than 30 million vaccinated citizens indicated that the highest level of protection was seen in people who received three doses of inactive vaccines, rather than in those who received two doses of inactive vaccines and one booster shot of an mRNA vaccine, the country's Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said on Wednesday.

While the minister avoided specifying brand names, he was referring to the vaccines now available in Turkey: the Chinese inactive vaccine CoronaVac by Sinovac Biotech and the mRNA offering developed by Pfizer and BioNTech.

While many Turks have preferred receiving a Pfizer booster shot, believing it is more effective than the Chinese vaccine, the research shows that using the same vaccine type works better. Health authorities in Turkey and other countries had been recommending that people inoculated with two doses of inactive vaccines receive an mRNA jab as a third dose to boost protection.

"Having three doses in designated groups is very important," Koca said. "People around the world will learn this data for the first time, and countries' vaccination policies will perhaps change."

He added that the researchers who carried out the study on Wednesday applied to a scientific journal to publish the full results.

Turkey has obtained tens of millions of doses of Sinovac since the beginning of the year and has administered it widely, starting with older adults. The Pfizer shots started to arrive in March, with the country accelerating procurement from June. Many in Turkey have sought out the Pfizer dose as the booster shot.

Turkey has also received a small quantity of Russian Sputnik V.

Umno veterans group expects PAS to discard Bersatu if PN suffers defeat in Melaka

Report: Umno veterans group expects PAS to discard Bersatu if Perikatan suffers decisive defeat in Melaka polls
[Image: 20190412AZ11.JPG]

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 25 — PAS is expected to discard Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) if the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition suffers a decisive defeat in next month’s Melaka state election, Veteran Umno Malaysia said.

Sinar Harian reported the group’s secretary, Datuk Mustapha Yaakub saying that PAS should not remain in both PN and Muafakat Nasional (MN) on the grounds of acting as peacemaker between Umno and Bersatu as it will only benefit Bersatu alone.

“PAS claims to want to be a peacemaker between Umno-Bersatu, yet the fact remains that it is the party’s strategy to prove its loyalty to the ‘big brother’ in PN that is Bersatu.

Manchester United 0-5 Liverpool: 'This was a terrible mismatch!

Manchester United 0-5 Liverpool: 'This was a terrible mismatch and Solskjaer has to take blame?'

The mood of this remarkable day was captured to perfection by the sight of Sir Alex Ferguson puffing out his cheeks with a face like thunder, while Sir Kenny Dalglish sat a few seats away sporting a smile that looked like it might have to be surgically removed.

Two knights, two old adversaries, two legendary figures at Manchester United and Liverpool epitomising the contrasting emotions of the two clubs and their different directions of travel.

The meeting between Manchester United and Liverpool, and this was the 208th, carries consequences.

As the shockwaves of this match reverberated around Old Trafford, the question is whether this result will carry more than most.

There was a sense of reckoning about this 5-0 Liverpool victory. It was on such a scale and such an embarrassment that it means Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's sympathisers will have an even tougher job claiming the Norwegian manager is up to the task of making Manchester United a serious force once again.

Horror as lawyer’s RM1 mil in life savings transferred without consent

KUALA LUMPUR – A lawyer here received a rude shock after losing RM1 million in life savings stashed in a renowned international bank, raising fears over the security of large funds handled by priority banking services for high-net-worth individuals.

In an alarming revelation, S. Rajan (not his real name) alleged that RM1 million from his fixed deposit accounts were transferred to an unknown individual’s account without his knowledge or consent.

According to a police report sighted by The Vibes, the lawyer, in his 30s, said he visited the bank in Bangsar with his mother on April 7 this year to open the fixed deposit accounts.

The accounts were meant to remain open until the same date next year to allow interest on the funds to mature.

The report said the funds were entrusted to a relationship manager from the branch who would handle all banking matters related to him and his mother.
