KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 6 — The Health Ministry’s blanket ban on events related to the Melaka state election was against the law and the government should have instead allowed any activities where physical distancing is possible, a lawyer has insisted.
Lawyer New Sin Yew, who is also co-chair of the Bar Council’s Human Rights Committee, argued that the total ban on any election gatherings during the campaign period would be contrary to the legal rights given to Malaysians under the Federal Constitution and the Election Offences Act.
New noted that the Melaka state election on November 20 is the first since the Sabah state election last year, which he said triggered waves of Covid-19 infections nationwide, with the Melaka election campaign period to be from November 8 until November 19.
Ahead of the Melaka state election, the Health Ministry (MoH) on October 24 announced that “any activity, gathering or social events related to the election is not allowed, including the organising of election machinery launches” from October 25 to November 27, with the aim of reducing the spread of Covid-19 infections and to avoid drastic rise in cases. The extended prohibition period covers both before, during and after the campaign for the Melaka state polls.

Malays aren’t poor, they just elect poor quality leaders, says Zaid

PETALING JAYA: A former minister says Malays as a whole are no longer poverty-stricken though the community is “poor” in the sense it lacks good leaders and institutions.
In a Facebook post, former de facto law minister Zaid Ibrahim questioned the expectations of those calling for new Bumiputera affirmative action policies.
“What sort of special upliftment do they expect the Malays to get year in year out? A race-based budget is just not done anywhere else in the world – and yet the Malays are still poor?
“The truth is Malays are not poor anymore. There are some who are but there are other poor people in the country too. Why not talk about them?”
Zaid said many Malays were doing very well and this could be seen from the multitudes of billboards promoting products of Malay-owned businesses and direct-selling companies, by the large number of Malays who play golf at country clubs, and by the ability of many Malays to buy branded items at premium outlets.
But, he said, the community had poor quality leaders who made bad decisions for selfish reasons.

KUALA TERENGGANU: PAS today declared it would stand by its Perikatan Nasional (PN) allies Bersatu and Gerakan, and urged all its supporters in Melaka to vote for PN in the upcoming state polls.
PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said this after he was asked about Barisan Nasional’s (BN) decision to field candidates in all 28 state seats.
“That question is an assumption (that BN will field candidates in all 28 seats). We will see who will be named during nomination day.
“But our stand is firm. PN will contest and it is up to Umno if it wants to cooperate with PN or go its own way.

It took 1,458 flights and 1,117 buses and trains for Drew Binsky to reach his goal of traveling to every country in the world.
And he did it in less than a decade.
CNBC spoke with Binsky nine hours after he touched down in his last country — Saudi Arabia — about how he financed his 10-year travel spree.
Visiting every country in the world
According to your tally, you’ve been to 197 countries. How do you define “country?”
You’re hitting me with a hard one right away. It’s very political. The U.N. has 193 recognized sovereign states. I add four to that — Kosovo, Palestine, Taiwan and Vatican. Some of these are observer states of the U.N., and they are also the four most recognized of all the unrecognized “countries.” I think I’m like the 250th person to visit every country.
Is there a name for this group?
The “every country” club. It’s a small community, and I’m friends with maybe 20 of them. There’s a lot of drama. It’s like: “You actually haven’t been to North Korea because you only went to the border of South Korea.” I don’t get involved in all that.

The US Congress has passed a landmark $1tn (£741bn) infrastructure spending package, delivering a major domestic win to President Joe Biden.
Negotiations over the sweeping public works bill - which passed the House of Representatives with 228-206 vote - created a bitter split among Democrats.
Meanwhile the House is moving forward with a more ambitious social spending bill favoured by liberal lawmakers.
The infrastructure package now heads to Mr Biden's desk to be signed into law.
Billed as a "once-in-a-generation" spending measure, the infrastructure legislation proposes $550bn in direct federal expenditure to upgrade highways, roads and bridges, as well as to modernise city transit systems and passenger rail networks.
The agreement also sets aside funding for clean energy, clean drinking water and high speed internet.

Melaka polls: controversies and implications – Khalid Samad

THE Melaka election that was forced upon us has had its fair share of controversies. First it was Pejuang that decided, as a matter of principle, to not participate in the elections. Then it was about the logo that was to be used – either PKR or Pakatan Harapan (PH).
When that was resolved, the issue of the candidacy of two ex-Umno assemblymen who renounced their support for the Umno chief minister became another issue of dispute.
DAP objected strongly to them being fielded as independents under the PH logo. When Amanah and PKR agreed to allow them to use the PH logo, DAP made its objection public.
DAP’s argument was then further enforced by various individuals who also denounced the decision, citing it as a deviation from PH principles.

KUALA TERENGGANU: PAS today said it cannot afford to be just a “passenger” in the country’s politics and will now prime itself to be the kingmaker in the next general election (GE15).
Party president Abdul Hadi Awang said, however, that it would continue to be a part of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition with Bersatu.
“We should not be confined to being a passenger in the country’s political journey.
“PAS must work towards being the decision-maker in the 15th general election, based on the contested seats, not the number of seats won.

At least 20% of Sinovac recipients reject Pfizer booster shots

KUALA LUMPUR – A worrying number of Sinovac vaccine recipients are purportedly refusing to be administered with Pfizer booster shots, threatening to derail the government’s effort to contain the spread of the Covid-19 virus.
General practitioner Dr Boo Cheng Hau, whose clinic in Skudai, Johor, is among the selected private health facilities serving as vaccination centres for the government’s National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme, noted that at least 20% of his patients have rejected their booster shots.
It is even more concerning seeing that these individuals are considered to be in the high-risk categories, the group that is currently being prioritised by Putrajaya.
This puts them at a higher potential risk of being infected with the virus, particularly with vaccines that have shown a waning efficacy over time.
Boo, who is also Johor DAP committee member, said his clinic has begun offering the Pfizer Comirnaty booster shots since last week.
