PETALING JAYA: Former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin has joined calls for the posts of Umno president and deputy president to be contested in the upcoming party elections.
Taking to Instagram today, Khairy hit out at a group of Umno leaders claiming to represent 140 divisions, who called for the top two posts not to be contested.
“Stop this madness. I think the president (Ahmad Zahid Hamidi) is a fighter who does not fear taking on challengers (for the Umno presidency).
“Make room for contests. Don’t kill off democracy in Umno,” he said.

Umno wing chiefs urge delegates to keep Zahid, Tok Mat in top two posts
KUALA LUMPUR – Umno wing leaders appear to be setting the tone for delegates at the party’s ongoing annual general assembly on calls that the party’s top two posts not be contested.
Wing leaders are backing party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and his deputy Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan to be unchallenged in party elections that must be held before May 19.
Umno Youth chief Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said a party’s president is an organisation’s “centre of gravity,” and bringing about their downfall would have detrimental outcomes for the party.
“The strategy of hurling personal attacks at a leader while attempting to assassinate his character and ruin his credibility is the most effective weapon to kill any party.
“The proof is how during the recent general election, Umno’s top two leaders were painted in a bad light, thanks to political accusations, to the point where Umno was brought down,” he said, referring to the party’s dismal performance in the 15th general election (GE15) last November.

Umno will barely be alive if it keeps Zahid, says Kadir Jasin
PETALING JAYA: A veteran newsman has urged Umno delegates to push for a change in its leadership, saying the party will barely be alive if it keeps Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and other “toxic leaders” at the helm.
In a Facebook post, A Kadir Jasin said keeping these leaders might not see Umno “dying” as a whole, but may leave it in the state of being barely alive.
He said Umno’s heavy loss in the 14th general election was caused by voters’ rejection of the Malay-Muslim party rather than actual attraction to Pakatan Harapan (PH).

Zahid brings baggage, not unity
From Ibrahim M Ahmad
Umno insiders did not take too kindly to comments made by deputy president Mohamad Hasan and others in the party hinting at a concerted effort to block challengers for the party’s top post.
“If possible, at this stage where we are still recovering from our losses (at GE15), the president’s post should be uncontested,” Mohamad, popularly known as Tok Mat, told reporters after his speech on the opening day of the party’s general assembly on Wednesday night.
The president’s loyalists, including supreme council member Puad Zakarshi, Wanita chief Noraini Ahmad, Puteri leader Zahida Zarik Khan and division leaders, have been chiming in agreement.
