Anwar advised to ignore Dr M’s lack of confidence in leadership

PETALING JAYA: Politicians and an analyst have advised Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to disregard former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s statement that he lacks confidence in Anwar’s leadership capabilities.

Former Umno Supreme Council member Nazri Aziz said Mahathir’s opinion “counts for nothing”, based on his performance in the last general election.

“Not only did he lose when he stood in Langkawi but he also lost his deposit alongside other members of the party (Pejuang) he led,” said Nazri.

He said this meant Mahathir no longer “commanded” the rakyat’s respect, so Anwar should be given a chance to lead the country.

“Anwar is now free to do what is good for the country, and we should allow him to do that,” he said.

The much-needed self-reflection by Tun M before criticising Anwar

TUN Dr Mahathir Mohamad is free to form his opinion on whether he is confident or not in Prime Minister (PM) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

But before commenting on the topic of confidence, it would be best for the two-time PM to assess and contemplate the people’s loss of confidence in him, his party and his coalition.

Anwar-led the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition to emerge as the biggest coalition in Parliament with 82 seats while the Dr Mahathir-led Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) coalition received zero.

Anwar officially won the Tambun parliamentary seat with a majority of 5,328 votes although the constituency is not his stronghold, while Dr Mahathir not only failed to defend his Langkawi parliamentary seat but even lost his deposit.

In a huge contrast, Anwar became Malaysia’s 10th PM upon receiving a mandate from his voter base, confidence from other coalitions, and endorsed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Malay Rulers. On the contrary, Dr Mahathir and his party became totally irrelevant in Malaysia’s current politics.

Give Anwar space, chance to lead Malaysia: Adly Zahari

ALOR GAJAH – Melaka Pakatan Harapan chairman Adly Zahari said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should be given the space and chance to prove his capability in steering the nation.

The deputy defence minister said he is confident that Anwar would be able to lead the country despite the global economic uncertainty next year based on the ability and experience of the 10th prime minister.

Calling Dr M’s bluff on Anwar’s leadership

Dr Mahathir Mohamad says he has no confidence in Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership, citing the latter’s approach to economic management at the time of the Asian Financial Crisis (AFC) in 1997/98.

Mahathir went on to state that we are in an “economic crisis” now and doubts the current leadership’s ability to come up with good strategies.

This is a doltish observation in the face of expected 2022 gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 8-9% (9.3% actual GDP growth, Q3 2022).

Irrelevant Dr Mahathir should just let go his bitterness towards nemesis Anwar

IT doesn’t matter anymore whether former twice premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has confidence in the leadership of current Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Whether Dr Mahathir lacks confidence in Anwar or he simply thinks that the latter should not be the PM is unclear.

Having deliberately spoiled the chances of Anwar becoming the PM twice in the political history of the country, Dr Mahathir lacks the legitimacy or credibility to comment on Anwar.

The issue of Anwar being unfit as the finance minister under the leadership of Dr Mahathir is questionable.

Forget about Dr M, focus on reforms, Kit Siang tells Anwar

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim should ignore the criticism hurled at him by Dr Mahathir Mohamad and focus on carrying out as many institutional reforms as possible, says DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang.

Lim said Anwar should be aware that there are political forces which are “conspiring to end his premiership” at the earliest opportunity.

“Anwar should ignore Mahathir and learn the most important lesson of the 22-month Pakatan Harapan government – carry out as many institutional reforms in the early months of the new government as possible as he may not have five years,” he said in a statement today.

“He should carry out the promise he made after he was appointed prime minister that he would not compromise on good governance, the anti-corruption drive, judicial independence and the welfare of ordinary Malaysians.

“Mahathir missed the historic opportunity to make Malaysia great again, and this is the mistake which Anwar should not repeat.”
