KUALA LUMPUR – Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has hinted that his coalition Perikatan Nasional (PN) will remain as the opposition and is not likely to be part of the unity government led by Pakatan Harapan (PH).

This is after he affirmed that PN will play a check and balance role in Parliament in its bid to voice the people’s concerns, in line with the principle of parliamentary democracy.

“Moving forward, PN will continue its struggle for the sake of the people’s welfare and the country’s wellbeing,” he said in brief statement today.

Muhyiddin also congratulated PH chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim over his appointment by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong as Malaysia’s 10th prime minister.

His remarks on playing a check and balance role, however, appear out of sync with PN component PAS, which said earlier today that the party will discuss Anwar’s offer to join his unity government with other PN coalition members.

Perikatan confirmed opposition but open to other forms of cooperation: Muhyiddin
[Image: 06112022_-_Muhyiddin_Yassin_-_Manifesto_...IS_-08.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has put to rest any confusion over Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) direction after the 15th general election, confirming today that the coalition will remain as the opposition.

He said this in his second statement for the day, after his earlier one merely said PN would play the role of check and balance on the Pakatan Harapan (PH)-led government of several coalitions.

“PN thanks Anwar for the offer to join the unity government led by him. However, we have taken the stand not to enter the PH-led government,” the PN chairman said.

“PN will play the role of a credible opposition, to carry the voice of the rakyat in Parliament as well as ensuring a government of integrity that is free of corruption.”

Muhyiddin, who is also Bersatu president, said PN decided to remain the opposition in the spirit of fostering democracy.

PETALING JAYA: Bersatu information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan said PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan may have “missed the memo” on Perikatan Nasional’s decision not to join Anwar Ibrahim’s unity government.

The Tasek Gelugor MP told FMT that last night, all PN MPs attended a briefing with coalition chairman Muhyiddin Yassin, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and Gerakan president Dominic Lau over the decision to remain as opposition.
