PAS won’t let other agendas sidetrack unity efforts, says Hadi

PETALING JAYA: PAS President Abdul Hadi Awang says that efforts to unite the ummah will continue, despite a snap general election being called.

“Ummah unity efforts will not be stifled by any agenda that does not put the interests of the people and country first,” he said in a statement after the dissolution of Parliament was announced today, which triggered a general election.

Parliament dissolution before Budget 2023 passing holds voters hostage: PKR lawmaker

GEORGE TOWN – Caretaker prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has now taken Malaysians “hostage” by dissolving Parliament before Budget 2023 is passed, said Bayan Baru incumbent Sim Tze Tzin.

The PKR politician said that by rushing the 15th general election (GE15) close to the end of this year instead of passing the federal budget that was tabled last Friday, the country faces the risk of a government shutdown if funds are not approved for spending next year.

“Ismail Sabri should have taken the honourable approach to first pass the budget, then hold polls.

“Now, the people are made hostages in the future fight for the country because of a rushed process to hold an election,” said Sim.

Bersih slams holding GE15 before Budget 2023 is passed

KUALA LUMPUR – Dissolving Parliament before Budget 2023 is passed may create a crisis if a new budget by a new government is voted down, the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih) said.


It condemned the move to dissolve Parliament and hold the 15th general election (GE15) soon, expressing concern about the budget’s re-tabling and whether it will be passed, thus causing further political instability.

“Bersih is concerned that regardless of whichever parties come to power, they would need to table its budget again, be it the same or a different one.

“This may become a crisis point, resulting in the collapse of the new government if its budget is voted down by its coalition partners,” Bersih’s steering committee said in a statement today.

With elections looming, Hadi presents two faces to voters

A statement by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang last week appears to have gone unnoticed, if only by the media who did not pick it up despite Hadi’s conciliatory tone, unlike his usual brashness that is unsettling to non-Muslims.

Writing in his column in the party organ HarakahDaily, he said PAS accepts the concept of moderation where there won’t be any force used against any religious practices as long as no one acts extremely against other religions.

He went on to say that since this concept is guaranteed in the Federal Constitution, PAS will oppose any quarters who try to defy this.

Hadi, whose pronouncements are regarded almost like Gospel truth for a section of PAS supporters, said racial fanaticism is “haram” (forbidden) although it is natural for human beings to love one’s own religion, family and racial identity.

Anwar pledges PH fight back: we don’t give up – ever

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan chairman Anwar Ibrahim insists the coalition is ready for the 15th general election (GE15), where it hopes to regain the mandate handed to them by Malaysians in the last election.

2 state assemblies to dissolve, Penang still in talks

PETALING JAYA: Moves to dissolve the state assemblies of Perlis and Perak are reported to be under way, while political discussions are being held in Penang about whether to have simultaneous state and federal elections.

The menteris besar of Perlis (Azlan Man) and Perak (Saarani Mohamad) are reported to be seeking royal consent from their state rulers for the dissolution of their state legislatures.

Pakatan, Muda to enter electoral pact: source

KUALA LUMPUR – The Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition will enter into an electoral pact with Muda in the upcoming 15th general election (GE15), said a source within the coalition.

Describing an electoral pact as “more practical and realistic”, the source revealed that the decision was made due to the proximity and urgency of GE15.

It was also revealed that the decision was made at a PH presidential council meeting last week.

The source who spoke on the condition of anonymity went on to explain that despite this development, Muda’s entry into the coalition had not been ruled out completely.

“What matters now is our shared goals in uniting to face Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional,” the source said.

Bring it on: Many netizens determined to vote, come rain or shine

KUALA LUMPUR – The dissolution of Parliament, nine months ahead of its full term, has triggered much outcry from many netizens, who took to Twitter to vent their frustrations with the early polls.

Announced by caretaker prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob earlier today, the dissolution comes amid much protest from ostensibly concerned citizens who have urged the government to prioritise flood preparation measures over the holding of the 15th general election (GE15).

However, the apparent dismissal of their worries has not deterred some voters, with Twitter user @ChrystianVII declaring that he is willing to wade through floodwaters to exercise his right to vote.

BN’s gamble: greater chance of win now with floods than next year, observers say

KUALA LUMPUR – Barisan Nasional (BN) would have calculated the impact of potential floods on its performance in the 15th general election (GE15) and likely found that it could face defeat if polls are held next year, political observers said.

They view the hurried dissolution of Parliament yesterday as a sign of concern that prolonging the current term could have negative political ramifications on BN, such as the emergence of other issues that would hurt the coalition’s chances at victory.

Speaking to The Vibes, Universiti Malaya’s Awang Azman Awang Pawi said that in deciding on a date, Umno and BN would have considered multiple factors key to determining the outcome of the election.

For one, postponing the polls to next year allows political rivals more time to make electoral preparations.
