Tajuddin’s appointment as envoy an affront to democracy

Switzerland is among European countries which bar sitting MPs of foreign countries being sent there as ambassadors. Nazri Aziz was rejected by Switzerland for this reason.

I cannot recall any sitting MP in Malaysia ever being appointed as an ambassador or high commissioner. Some politicians were “rewarded” after being dropped as election candidates, including those who could not perform as legislators. These were political appointments made to appease them in return for their support.

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has created another first by appointing Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman as Malaysia’s ambassador to Indonesia, in a move seen as akin to securing political support within Umno.

Scrap Tajuddin’s appointment as envoy, MP urges PM

PETALING JAYA: A DAP MP has urged Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to scrap controversial MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman’s appointment as Malaysia’s ambassador to Indonesia, saying he lacks the necessary diplomatic skills needed for the job.

Bukit Bendera MP Wong Hon Wai said Tajuddin had proven he was unfit for the role of ambassador following a press conference he held yesterday as well as his conduct in Parliament previously.

“The role of public officials should be based on eligibility, experience and suitability of character, instead of political considerations,” he said.

Wong said the prime minister should not use his position to please those who supported him and yet were unsuitable for the role.

‘Uncivilised’ Tajuddin doesn’t deserve envoy’s post, say Umno Youth leaders

PETALING JAYA: Several Umno Youth leaders have joined in calls for controversial MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman’s appointment as Malaysia’s ambassador to Indonesia to be withdrawn.

Umno Youth exco member Muqharabbin Mokhtarrudin said he respected the Pasir Salak MP as a veteran in the party but maintained that Tajuddin’s recent actions showed he did not deserve the envoy’s post.

IN his latest attempt to defend the government’s mind-boggling appointment of Pasir Salak MP Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman as our Malaysian ambassador in Indonesia, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob is trying his best to defuse such a boiling issue.

Now he is unnecessarily dragging the royal institution into the fiasco.

In responding to a clarion call by many civil society groups – including a few former senior ambassadors – the prime minister contended that any attempt to withdraw the appointment of Tajuddin may be tantamount to questioning the Agong’s discretionary power.

With the greatest respect, his reasons are at best flawed and at worst too pathetic.

Tajuddin dropped as envoy to Indonesia

PETALING JAYA: Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman will not be Malaysia’s ambassador to Indonesia after Putrajaya decided to drop his appointment.

A source told FMT that Tajuddin’s name is not on the latest list of those who are to receive their letters of appointment from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong tomorrow.
