KOTA KINABALU: Lahad Datu MP Mohamaddin Ketapi has dismissed the need for an anti-hopping bill, saying every person has the right to freedom of speech and freedom of choice as in developed countries.

Mohamaddin was formerly with Warisanand later moved to Bersatu. He said elected representatives switched to other parties to grow and to solve problems faced by the people.

“We migrate from one party to another for the sake of the people and the country but now we are stopped with the anti-hopping bill,” he said.

The federal government has proposed to enact a law that would prevent MPs and state assembly members from switching parties after they are elected. The law is being drafted by a special bipartisan committee.

Mohammadin said he was ready to contest in the coming general election, which he said could be held at any time. It was up to the prime minister to decide when to call for elections, he said.
