PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal today affirmed the conviction and sentence imposed by the High Court last year on Najib Razak in relation to RM42 million belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd, dealing a major setback to his efforts to make a comeback to mainstream politics.
In a unanimous decision, a three-member bench chaired by Abdul Karim Abdul Jalil said trial judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali did not misdirect himself for an appellate intervention.
Karim, who sat with Has Zanah Mehat and Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera, also dismissed the former prime minister’s appeal against his sentence.
Nazlan had sentenced the Pekan MP to 12 years’ jail and fined him RM210 million after finding him guilty on seven counts of corruption in July last year.
Najib, 68, is the first former prime minister in the country to be charged in court and sentenced to jail.
