PETALING JAYA: One way of preventing elected representatives from defecting to another party is to hold recall elections under the proposed anti-hopping law, says former deputy Dewan Rakyat speaker Azalina Othman Said.

In a frequently asked questions (FAQ) sheet on the proposed law, she said recall elections would allow the people to revoke their mandate given to an elected representative if he or she decides to switch parties.

The Pengerang MP explained that polling would be held in the affected area for the people to choose a new representative.

To a question about elections with a mandate for parties, Azalina described it as a mechanism for the people to vote based on political parties, not individuals.

“The party will win the seat based on the overall percentage of votes obtained. This requires amendments to the electoral system,” she said.
