Umno MPs who defy party wishes risk suspension, sacking

PETALING JAYA: Umno MPs who go against the party by backing the Perikatan Nasional government risk having disciplinary action taken against them, a party leader warned.

The leader, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said Article 20.8 of Umno’s constitution lists what is required of each member, while Article 20.9 stipulates the actions that can be taken against members who breach the party’s constitution and code of conduct.

Article 20.8, the leader said, states that members must toe the party line and adhere to its decisions. “The constitution is also clear on adherence to the code of conduct and realising the party’s policies.”

The warning comes in the wake of two Umno MPs – Idris Jusoh and Ismail Abd Muttalib – declaring that they would continue to back Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s leadership.
