KOTA KINABALU: Upko is the latest political party to reject Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s proposal for a national operations council similar to the Majlis Gerakan Negara (Mageran) to temporarily take over the reins of the country.

Upko president Wilfred Madius Tangau said the matter was among nine issues he raised at a virtual audience today with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah.

Madius said he was prepared to explain the party’s decision to its Warisan Plus allies.

“Our explanation is simple – we are not convinced Mageran can bring political stability because it does not involve the people, does not involve Parliament.”

Madius said if Mageran is formed, it would rely only on its members who would need to ensure it makes no mistakes.

Should mistakes be made, Madius said the people would be angry and this could lead to an uprising not only against Mageran but possibly the royal institution.
