PETALING JAYA: A restaurant association has questioned the wisdom of requiring eateries to close by 8pm under the current movement control order.

Malaysian Indian Restaurant Owners Association president J Suresh said the restriction served only to inconvenience restaurant operators, food delivery services and customers.

“It is difficult for the operators as they will have to take their last orders by 7pm before rushing to close their restaurants,” he told FMT. “The rush hour orders will make it impossible for us to close by 8pm.”

Suresh said the restrictions would also endanger the lives of food delivery riders because they would have to rush to fulfil their final orders.

He urged the government to extend operating hours for the take-out option to 10pm, saying this might prevent a rush.

“I suggest the government look into this matter seriously and allow restaurants to operate until at least 10pm.”

A Grab spokesman said the number of e-hailing riders available for deliveries was sufficient.

“Apart from the e-hailing riders, we also have GrabCar drivers delivering food orders,” she told FMT.
