Voters tired of instability, economy the priority

KUALA LUMPUR: Livestock and animal feed trader Zamri Haron lost RM400,000 during the floods last December that damaged his equipment and spoiled his stocks.

He received no government aid, and was forced to borrow money from friends and family to pay his workers and run the business.

As he prepares to cast his ballot in the general election tomorrow, Zamri said he will be choosing a candidate who can help deal with financial losses and a slowing economy.

“As traders ourselves, we don’t see the government helping or providing (aid). What we expect from the candidate who will lead this area is to be honest and help people,” he said.

GE15: rain or shine, hard-hit citizens raring to cast ballots for next govt

KUALA LUMPUR – With voting day for the long-awaited 15th general election (GE15) just tomorrow, voters here are waiting with bated breaths to cast their ballots for a new government.

It appears that as polling stations are readied for operations, citizens are more perked up than ever, with many taking the opportunity to attend campaign events in person instead of tuning in online.

This was evidenced by the huge crowd numbering around 2,000 at a Pakatan Harapan (PH) rally here last night, with several attendees approached by The Vibes sharing their anxieties and cautious optimism for the nation’s future.

For housewife Nina, 27, polling day will be her chance to play her part in ensuring that her 10-month-old daughter flourishes in a stable and harmonious nation as she grows older.

Pundits’ take on hot seats

PETALING JAYA: While 222 seats are up for grabs in tomorrow’s elections, some will be of greater interest than others.

In Pagoh, former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin must win if he wants to return to power, while Anwar Ibrahim’s elusive dream to become prime minister hangs in the balance in Tambun.

There are other hot seats as well – from Arau to Titiwangsa to Penampang.

FMT takes a look at 10 of these seats as analysts Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara, Oh Ei Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs, and Universiti Malaya’s Awang Azman Pawi weigh in on the likely winners.

GE15: PKR to file election petition against Muhyiddin for inciting racial hatred

KUALA LUMPUR – PKR plans to file an election petition against Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin if he wins the Pagoh parliamentary seat tomorrow, following a remark by the Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman that has been accused of inciting racial and religious tensions.

This could be the first time a petition on such grounds is filed, according to PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli, who made clear the party’s intention of taking the matter to court.

He was referring to a viral video clip of Muhyiddin urging the rakyat not to vote for Pakatan Harapan (PH) and suggesting that Christians are working in concert with a group of Jews to promote and Christianise Malaysia.

In a press conference today, Rafizi said the statement is in violation of Section 4A of the Election Offences Act 1954, which prohibits, among others, the promotion of feelings of ill-will, discontent or hostility between persons of other races.

“It’s PH, PN race with wafer-thin majority & high chances of hung parliament”

EARLIER during the fourth day of campaigning on Nov 8, I had predicted that the 15th General Election (GE15) will turn out to be the toughest to predict on which coalition will form the government.

Fast forward to now as we enter the last lap of the election, it still remains tough to predict although some patterns have emerged based on many surveys.

Barisan Nasional (BN) helmed by UMNO which was the favourite to win at the start of campaigning is now trailing behind Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH).

The battle between PN and PH is now a neck-to-neck one as we enter the last day of campaigning with the likelihood that either one will emerge as the winner with some 112 or 113 seats when combined with the seats of the winning coalitions in Sabah and Sarawak.

PH leading, BN trailing, PN far behind, says think tank



PETALING JAYA: None of three major coalitions will be able to secure a simple majority in the 15th general election, a think tank said, although Pakatan Harapan is poised to win 86 seats.

The other two coalitions, Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional will likely win 51 and 25 seats respectively, Ilham Centre said.

Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s Gabungan Tanah Air and Parti Bangsa Malaysia will only manage one seat each.

Ilham Centre said their prediction is based on an 80% voter turnout.

GE15: surveys no crystal balls, polls remain an open race – The Vibes

KUALA LUMPUR – If the various polls and surveys are to be taken at face value, the outcome of tomorrow’s general election seems to be a race that is wide open.

If the Economist UK is to be believed, Barisan Nasional (BN) will win. The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) however said it will not win a two-thirds majority, and hence will need to look across the divide to form alliances to establish a federal government.

It also said the estimated 6.23 million new voters are not anticipated to make the necessary difference expected of the shift in voting patterns between the 18- and 24-year-olds.

The Malaysian Institute of National Development, meanwhile, polled 1,000 voters in 166 parliamentary constituencies in Peninsular Malaysia, and predicted that BN will get 75 seats, Pakatan Harapan (PH) 54 seats, and Perikatan Nasional (PN) 36 seats.

Time’s running out as Anwar fights for top job

KUALA LUMPUR: Anwar Ibrahim, Malaysia’s perennial opposition leader, has often been on the cusp of power, but age is catching up with him and this general election (GE15) could be his last chance to win the top job.

The 75-year-old, whose political career spans four decades and includes two prison stints, is optimistic his Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition can finally win enough seats to form a government and replace the graft-tainted ruling party.

“Things are looking good and we are cautiously confident,” he told reporters after casting his vote today.

So long the runner-up of Malaysian politics, the PKR president could be running out of time to achieve his long-held but elusive ambition of leading the Southeast Asian nation.

You’ll never repent so we’re not convinced of your apology, Muhyiddin told

WE condemn the racist and fanatic slur by former prime minister (PM) Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in the Tik Tok video clip which has gone viral. Among others, he stated that “it’s very dangerous to support political parties such as Pakatan Harapan (PH)” given that he has watched a video depicting that “the Jews were talking about Malaysia and praying for the government to fall into the opposition’s hands”.

He also went on claiming that “there are Malays attending churches in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya on Sundays and it seems they have converted to Christian”, thus “their intention is to take over Malaysia and colonise the nation”.

We in GHRF are not surprised with Muhyiddin’s statement or any other race-based political parties since racism and fanatic remarks have become a norm by politicians from PAS and GTA (Gerakan Tanah Air) component parties to gain the support of the Malay Muslim community.

GE15: Syed Hamid Albar predicts BN to fall hard

KUALA LUMPUR – Former cabinet minister and five-term Umno MP Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar has predicted that Barisan Nasional (BN) may taste a heavy defeat in the 15th general election.

He opined that the BN component parties’ failure to reform and adjust to the current political climate would lead to its fall tomorrow.

“Umno refuses to reinvent its image and they are still in dreamland. And that includes the MCA and MIC style of politics that is very old,” Syed Hamid told The Vibes.

He said that based on his observation and intelligence gathering on the ground, BN was working on limited funding and applying the same modus operandi of communication to voters that was unattractive to voters.
