The Good, the Bad, The Ugly – Ep 17: Tawfik Ismail takes on giants, looks to reset M’sia’s moral compass
TAWFIK Ismail made headlines this week when he announced his intention to contest in any constituency that Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi runs in during the 15th general election. Is this a sign of overconfidence or a (political) suicidal urge?
Speaking to The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, the Gerak Independent (GI) candidate said he decided to go into the Malay heartland to contest what he feels is “the king of all problems that face us today”.
Tawfik spoke about the philosophy behind GI and the need for an independent voice in Malaysian politics to further a more open democracy, which is not apparent when you have party politics.
“GI is a group of individuals who feel that party politics are archaic and also negative when it comes to fostering democracy in this country,” he said.

Bid to stop GE15 no challenge against Agong: Santiago
KUALA LUMPUR – Incumbent Klang MP Charles Santiago said his originating summons to stop the 15th general election (GE15) is not against the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong, but against caretaker prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s request to dissolve Parliament.
“We are challenging the advice given to his majesty by Ismail Sabri, which is void under the circumstances.
“(His) request for the dissolution (was) done without cabinet support,” Santiago said in a statement today.
He was responding to the filing of an application yesterday by the caretaker prime minister, government, and Election Commission to strike out his originating summons.

BN must win big to end feeling of ‘instability’, says Ismail
BERA: Barisan Nasional (BN) must win big in the 15th general election (GE15) to be the dominant party in Putrajaya, says caretaker Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
He said this was necessary so that important decisions can be implemented easily.
According to Ismail, a BN victory, coupled with the cooperation of its allies in Sabah and Sarawak, would end the feeling of “instability” and the need to rely on other parties.
“Now, although I am the prime minister, BN only has 42 seats in the government, not many.

KUALA LUMPUR – At 85, Umno veteran Tan Sri Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah is prepared to defend the Gua Musang parliamentary seat if the party chooses him as the candidate for the 15th general election.
He said voters in the seat which he has defended for 12 terms do not want him to step aside.

BN clouded by graft and greed, says Hadi on PAS siding with PN
KUALA LUMPUR – Islamist party PAS is slamming the brakes on its cooperation with Barisan Nasional (BN), claiming that there is now “cloudiness” in the coalition due to unresolved bribery cases and greed for power among its leaders.
According to an article published by PAS mouthpiece Harakah Daily, PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang reasoned that while some bribe receivers are victims of slander, some perpetrators of corruption still remain in the coalition.
“Bribe recipients are still in BN, and then they are careless about implementing (Islamic beliefs),” he said.
“They are Muslims who have ruled for over fifty years but they are neglectful in practising Islam,” he was quoted as saying during a lecture in Terengganu today.

Zahid will be prime minister if BN wins: Anwar
KUALA LUMPUR – Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will be prime minister if Barisan Nasional (BN) wins the 15th general election, said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Speaking at a ceramah in Tapah, Perak last night, the opposition leader did not back up his claim, but said it was evident that BN wanted an early election this year so that it could regain power.
“If BN wins, Zahid will be PM. If Perikatan (Nasional) wins, it will be (Tan Sri) Muyiddin (Yassin),” he said.
“If Pakatan Harapan (PH) wins, it will be me-lah,” the PH chairman and PKR president added, drawing laughter and cheers from the crowd.
Umno had previously named its vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who is currently caretaker prime minister, as its prime minister candidate.

In defence of Pakatan’s “principled decision” against holding polls concurrently
THE Pakatan Harapan presidential council might not have made the optimal decision in going for separate state elections for the three states under its control, namely; Penang, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan.
Anyway, it was the best decision under the present political circumstances that all three states opt for separate elections.
Penang made a powerful case as to why it preferred concurrent elections, both parliamentary and state.
The matter was debated at three levels before its escalation to Pakatan’s presidential council.
A day or two was taken to deliberate the matter, taking into account the views of the three component parties in Penang, the DAP central executive committee and members of the Pakatan presidential council.
The decision was finally made today: that the three Pakatan states would not dissolve their respective state assemblies but go for separate state elections next year.
