PETALING JAYA: Najib Razak has urged the government to protect Sapura Energy Bhd from bankruptcy by providing loans or instructing Petronas or Khazanah Nasional to take over ownership from Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB).
The former prime minister was critical of PNB for failing to take action during the tenure of the previous Perikatan Nasional administration on Sapura’s problems and for stopping cash flow assistance.

Rafizi not seeing bigger picture on Sapura, says Najib
PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Najib Razak says PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli is not seeing the bigger picture in stating that money used to bail out ailing oil and gas company Sapura Energy Bhd could be put to better use to serve the rakyat.
In a retort to the Pekan MP, Rafizi had said bailing out Sapura would only benefit a handful of elites, and that it was unfair to spend billions on the firm at a time when businesses and employees across the country were facing tough times.

‘Anytime’: Anwar accepts Najib’s challenge to debate
KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysians could soon witness a mouth-watering debate featuring two of the country’s most popular politicians – Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Datuk Seri Najib Razak – if things go as planned.
In a Facebook post, Anwar, who is parliamentary opposition leader and PKR president, said he accepts the challenge from Najib, the Umno MP for Pekan, to a debate involving the financially-troubled Sapura Energy Bhd.
“My stand is clear and unwavering for over 10 years, where I have thrown similar challenges at him (Najib) but (they) were not responded to,” Anwar said.
“He is now choosing to challenge me in the month of Ramadan after failing to respond to a rebuttal by my (party) colleague Rafizi Ramli on Sapura’s ‘bailout’ crisis at a time when the welfare of the poor and small businesses is not protected.
“I am ready to face and debate Najib anytime, for the sake of the country and the people,” he added in a statement.

I disagreed with Dr M’s Sapura bailout during PH rule, Rafizi tells Najib[/align
PETALING JAYA: PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli says he had disagreed with the Pakatan Harapan government’s decision to bail out Sapura Energy Bhd through the injection of funds from Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) in 2019.
The former Pandan MP said he had no influence or position in the PH government but had spoken out against several decisions made by then prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
“I had disagreed with the decision by the Dr Mahathir Mohamad-led PH government to inject PNB funds to save Sapura,” he said in a statement today.
Rafizi maintained that he was always against the bailout of private companies using public funds, but accused former prime minister Najib Razak of being inconsistent in his stand.
“While he criticised PH’s bailout of Sapura in 2019, now he thinks he’s smart and caring by calling for the same thing,” he said.
