KUALA LUMPUR – Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman announced that the party has decided to end its support for the federal unity government and has opted to be a “third force” opposition in Malaysia.

He said the party has made the move as a protest against the ruling to give a discharge not amounting to an acquittal to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi from graft-related charges.

“Muda has decided to become the third force opposition as a sign of protest because the government today dropped 47 cases of corruption,” he said in a posting on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“This is the beginning of normalising corruption. We cannot and will not tolerate this unprincipled move.

Quit your Muar seat for by-election, Syed Saddiq told

PETALING JAYA: Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has been challenged to vacate his parliamentary seat and force a by-election, following Muda’s decision to end support for the unity government.

The decision left the government without a two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat, just a day after Pakatan Harapan had restored the supermajority by winning the Pulai parliamentary seat in a by-election.

RSN Rayer of DAP who is MP for Jelutong, said the loss of the two-thirds majority due to Muda’s exit would hurt efforts to carry out legal and political reforms that require constitutional amendments.

“Muda’s new alignment a positive move for unity govt,” says Kian Ming

MUDA president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman’s decision to not align with the unity government nor with the Perikatan Nasional (PN) opposition bloc should be seen in a positive light from the perspective of the unity government, said a former minister.

Former Bangi MP Professor Dr Ong Kian Ming said this is because with the loss of the two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat following the Muar MP’s exit, the unity government will no longer be “held hostage” by one or two individuals for the passage of any constitutional amendments.

Ong cited the proposed amendments to Part II of the Federal Constitution regarding citizenship matters or changing the number of parliamentary seats arising from a delimitation exercise as examples.

“I am referring not just to Syed Saddiq but also to the two MPs from MCA, to the one MP from MIC, and to the MPs from smaller parties in Sabah and Sarawak who may want to extract certain concessions from the Prime Minister in exchange for supporting these constitutional amendments,” he said in a statement today (Sept 11).

“Whack Syed Saddiq, he is now with the devil’s advocate!”

Letter to editor

THE hot topic now on social media is a video clip demonising MUDA president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman seen being introduced to several politicians from PAS.

Many netizens are easily hoodwinked by such portrayal of the MUDA head honcho being now friendly to PAS leaders. It is not surprising that many have felt that they have been cheated all these years since his debut as a Bersatu candidate in the 13th General Election (GE13) in 2018.

The difference is that being members of the press, we have direct access to seek his response to the video: “In MPs Lounge (in parliament), I meet government and opposition MPs every day since 2018.”

Syed Saddiq, speaking truth to power or just an ingrate?

The Muda president and its sole representative in parliament has declared that from now on, he will be sitting in the opposition bloc. And on his first day itself, he pulled no punches, and called the unity government “hypocritical” for rejecting the emergency motion filed to debate the conditional discharge that Ahmad Zahid Hamidi received in his corruption case.

Since his declaration of “independence,” Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has variously been described as a “spoilt brat,” an ingrate, or worse, a secret agent of Dr Mahathir Mohamad and/or PN.
