PETALING JAYA: The signing of Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s “Malay Proclamation” by various opposition party leaders is more likely an attempt to rally those who are against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim ahead of the state elections, say analysts.

Awang Azman Pawi of Universiti Malaya said bringing together all the “anti-Anwar” groups would strengthen the opposition’s influence among the Malay voters.

“With this Malay Proclamation, the opposition can cultivate the Malay sentiments, especially among their staunch supporters in Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah,” he told FMT.

Wrong for PN leaders to sign Dr M’s ‘Malay Proclamation’, says Gerakan No 2

PETALING JAYA: A Gerakan leader has spoken out against several of his Perikatan Nasional colleagues for supporting the “Malay Proclamation” initiated by Dr Mahathir Mohamad, describing it as “inappropriate”.

Gerakan deputy president Oh Tong Keong said the Bersatu and PAS leaders should be working to help address economic issues instead of lending support to a race-based movement.

When Hadi met Mahathir

For how long will racist politicians continue to tout the line that Malays must unite, save their community, and prevent non-Malays from deciding their fate?

On May 2, PAS president Hadi Awang and a group of other Malay politicians, including party secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan and vice-president Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, paid a visit to former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to sign his “Malay Proclamation”.

Writer has a strong warning for Hadi Awang in his alliance with Tun M

WRITER and thinker who goes by the username @syafiqalib on his Twitter account warned PAS leader Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang about his ‘Malay Unity’ alliance with former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad saying it is Hadi’s supporters who will be hurt in the end.

“On average, many people are aware of Dr Mahathir’s advantages and cunning tricks during his time in the political world. A lot of rhetoric from sincerity. A world of lies,” he wrote.

He added that the news of Hadi giving support to Dr Mahathir in the ‘Malay Proclamation’ is going “to hurt the hearts of those who give faith and support to Hadi.”

He also accused Hadi of being inconstant in his struggle with PAS, saying Hadi’s fatwa (edicts) and principles seem to always change. It is all according to Hadi’s political interests, said Syafiq.

When two dividers get together to urge unity
[Image: 4403bfa9-dr-m-mahathir-hadi-awang-twitter-123.jpg]

From Terence Netto

Last week, two perennial sources of division in Malaysian society got together to sign a proclamation that urged Malays to unite in order to save race and country.

We know that politics does throw up strange bedfellows but the notion of Dr Mahathir Mohamad teaming up with PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang to counsel Malay unity places a severe strain on credulity.

Their track records in the country’s post-May 13 history are an inventory of division, a blight that has followed them throughout their careers.

PETALING JAYA: Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his “Malay Proclamation” should not be taken lightly, say two analysts, although Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has dismissed Mahathir as a political liability.

Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said the government should not write Mahathir off. “Any strategy based on the Malay struggle, especially in the coming state elections, will be effective,” he told FMT.
