Do away with ‘Bumiputera’ and ‘non-Bumiputera’, says academic - superadmin - 11-18-2020
PETALING JAYA: An academic says the terms Bumiputera and non-Bumiputera should be done away with because they resemble a “us versus them” mentality.
Speaking at a webinar organised by the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS) today, Rabi’ah Aminudin of the International Islamic University Malaysia said it was time to discuss the idea of a “Malaysian identity” instead.
She said although the Rukun Negara existed as a basis of national unity, it was hardly embodied in the way Malaysians identified themselves as members of a single community.
“It’s not about having to remove some of our ethnic identity, but how we can build another identity for all Malaysians to adapt to, without feeling threatened that their own ethnic identity is being compromised.
