Seeking Advice on Hiring a CPG Lawyer for Consumer Goods Business - jopit - 10-23-2025

Hello everyone,

I’m in the process of launching a consumer packaged goods (CPG) business and want to ensure all legal aspects are properly addressed from the start. I’ve heard that hiring a CPG lawyer can be crucial, especially for product labeling, regulatory compliance, and contracts with manufacturers or distributors.

I’m curious about how to find an experienced CPG lawyer, what typical fees look like, and what questions I should ask during an initial consultation. Any personal experiences, recommendations, or insights would be incredibly helpful!

Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

Congrats on your CPG venture! Hiring a CPG lawyer is definitely smart. To find one, look for attorneys specializing in consumer products, food, or beverage law. Referrals from industry groups, LinkedIn, or other entrepreneurs can help. A CPG lawyer can guide you on fees, which often range from $250 to $600 hourly, though some offer flat rates for tasks like contract review or label compliance.

In your first consultation, ask about their experience with regulatory compliance, labeling requirements, working with manufacturers and distributors, IP and trademark issues, and billing structure. A good lawyer can help you avoid costly mistakes and set your business up for long-term success.
