An FXS VoIP Gateway is a device that connects traditional analog telephones, fax machines, or PBX systems to a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) network. It provides analog ports to interface with these legacy devices, allowing them to send and receive voice signals over an IP network instead of traditional phone lines.
The FXS gateway acts as the source of dial tone, ringing voltage, and call signaling, enabling analog devices to function as though they are connected to a regular phone line, even though the call is actually being transmitted over the internet.
How it works:
- The analog device (e.g., phone or fax machine) is connected to the FXS port on the gateway.
- When a call is made, the gateway converts the analog voice signal into digital packets using a codec.
- These digital packets are transmitted over the IP network to the destination (which could be another VoIP device or a VoIP service provider).
- On incoming calls, the process is reversed—digital packets are converted back to analog signals and sent to the analog device.
FXS VoIP gateways are commonly used in businesses that want to keep using their existing analog equipment while transitioning to VoIP for cost savings and enhanced functionality.
