Earliest date for GE15: Nov 5 or 12?

KUALA LUMPUR – The Election Commission (EC) will tomorrow announce the polling day for the 15th general election (GE15), already widely believed to be by the middle of November before the monsoon season kicks in, but pundits are attempting to narrow down the date even more.

November 12, a Saturday, is reasonable, according to political analyst Mohd Azizuddin Mohd Sani from Universiti Utara Malaysia.

A little over three weeks from the EC’s announcement tomorrow, November 12 gives enough time for candidate nominations and at minimum a two-week campaign period, he told Getaran, The Vibes’ sister portal.

DAP to drop Charles Santiago?

PETALING JAYA: DAP may drop three-term Klang MP Charles Santiago from its lineup for the 15th general election (GE15), says a party source.

“Santiago will not be contesting any seats for DAP,” said the source who declined to be named.

The source also said V Ganabatirau, the Selangor exco for social welfare and employee empowerment, is likely to replace Santiago.

“Initially it was supposed to be Seri Kembangan assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah but the response from the public was not good so there has been a change,” the source told FMT.

In the 2018 general election, Santiago retained the Klang seat with a 78,773-vote majority against Barisan Nasional and PAS candidates.

When contacted, Ganabatirau said he had heard that he would be asked to contest a parliamentary seat but he did not know where he would be asked to stand.

“I am not sure whether it will be Klang or some other seat in Selangor but if it is Klang, I will contest,” he said.

Amanah, PH want Dzulkefly to defend Kuala Selangor seat
[Image: Dzulkefly-Ahmad-fmt-010622-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Amanah and Pakatan Harapan want Dzulkefly Ahmad to defend his Kuala Selangor parliamentary seat in the 15th general election (GE15), says Amanah deputy president Salahuddin Ayub.

Salahuddin said while Dzulkefly had previously announced that he wished to make way for a younger candidate in GE15, those plans may have to be put on hold as Umno looked poised to name caretaker finance minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz as Barisan Nasional’s candidate for the seat.

Santiago’s suit academic with polls set for Nov 19, court told
[Image: 05-CHARLES-ANTHONY-SANTIAGO.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR: A lawyer for the Election Commission (EC) has told the High Court that former Klang MP Charles Santiago’s lawsuit to halt the general election can no longer be heard with the nation set to go to the polls next month.

“This suit is now (rendered) academic,” lawyer Zulkefli Ahmad Makinudin said today after bringing to the court’s attention that the EC has scheduled the 15th general election for Nov 19.

[Image: Khalid-Samad-Johari-Ghani-Wan-Fayhsal.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Titiwangsa is shaping up to be one of the parliamentary seats to watch in the 15th general election (GE15), with three big names from Barisan Nasional, Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional expected to clash at the polls.

Former federal territories minister Khalid Samad told FMT that he was “most probably” going to contest in Titiwangsa in GE15 instead of Shah Alam, a seat he had held for three terms.

14-day campaign period for GE15 too short, says Bersih
[Image: FMT-BN-PAS-CERAMAH-CROWD-120419-71.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Electoral reform group Bersih has expressed disappointment in the Election Commission (EC) for fixing only 14 days, and not 21 days, as the campaign period for the 15th general election (GE15).

It said the additional seven days would have given the contesting parties an opportunity to meet the people on the ground, especially with six million more voters now compared to the last general election (GE14).

Voting for GE15 on Nov 19, nominations on Nov 5: Election Commission
[Image: 25092020-SBH-spr_prepare_-_sairien_2.jpg]

PUTRAJAYA – Malaysia’s 15th general election (GE15) and state elections for Perlis, Pahang and Perak will be held on November 19, a Saturday, the Election Commission (EC) said today.

Nomination day is fixed for November 5, EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh told a press conference after a special meeting of the elections governing body.

This means the campaign period will last 14 days.

Early voting will be held on November 15.

The Bugaya state seat in Sabah, which fell vacant in November 2020, will also hold its by-election concurrently on November 19, Ghani added.

The three states holding elections concurrently with parliamentary polls are Barisan Nasional-governed states – Pahang with 42 seats, Perlis with 15, and Perak with 59.

Should Lim Guan Eng contest in GE15 amid his ongoing court case?
[Image: e5ac1445-4a46-4b07-8ea0-6021c8932089.jpg]

ALLOW me to be frank that this public opinion is consistent to the current sentiment that until one’s court cases are disposed of, he or she should refrain from standing in any election.

In the case of UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, he was recently acquitted of 40 charges of receiving bribes from a company to extend its foreign visa system (VLN). The Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) has since appealed against his case.

However, he still has another case involving the Yayasan Akal Budi which is on-going. If found guilty before the nomination date, he would be disqualified.

If he is guilty as charged after the nomination date, his candidacy would still be valid and he can stand for the forthcoming 15th General Election (GE15).

If he wins but found guilty, he will still not lose his status as MP unless he has exhausted his appeal process with the Federal Court rule that he is guilty.

PH needs coherent economic views to win in GE15, says Chin Tong
[Image: Undi-PRN-Johor-81.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan (PH) must come up with coherent economic views for the 15th general election (GE15) if it hopes to retake Putrajaya and lead the nation well, said DAP strategist Liew Chin Tong.

Liew said the key to wooing fence-sitters, especially youngsters, was to prove that Malaysia would be better off in the years to come under a new government.
