Amended Road Transport Bill with harsher penalties will be law by next week, says minister
JOHOR BARU, Oct 16 — The Road Transport Act (Amendment) Bill 2020 pertaining to intoxicated and dangerous driving has been given the royal assent and will be made law by next week, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said today.
He said the royal assent was obtained yesterday, adding that the Transport Ministry will gazette the Bill next week, which means the revised penalties can then be enforced.
The Ayer Hitam MP noted public unhappiness with the outcome of a recent court case involving a driver who was sentenced to only six years imprisonment and fined RM8,000 by the Magistrate’s Court for a fatal road crash that claimed the lives of a naval officer in Johor Baru recently.
“I wish to stress that both sections concern different situations in which the offences under Section 45 do not involve death or injury.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 — Opponents could test Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s support in Parliament next month even if their motions of no-confidence are blocked, according to a constitutional expert
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia research fellow for law and constitution Dr Muhammad Fathi Yusof told Sinar Harian this was because the federal Budget for 2021 was due to be tabled in the November-December meeting.
“If the Budget is not passed, it proves that Muhyiddin has lost the support of the majority,” he was quoted as saying.
By parliamentary convention, the failure to secure lawmakers’ approval for the national budget is considered a successful vote of no-confidence against the party in power, which is currently Perikatan Nasional (PN).

Unthinkable, but can DAP and Umno work together? |

PW Cheng: Let’s be honest. In this country, the Malays need the non-Malays and vice versa. There’s no secret about it.
If Umno and DAP can come to a middle-ground, I think that can set the momentum for the country to move forward. The rakyat on the ground can adapt as well.
It’s only the politicians who want to divide us. I would rather see them fighting behind closed doors rather than openly, which would frighten away investors. There must come a time when sanity rules.
If only we can discover something like the time of Tunku Abdul Rahman, we will be on the right track. Let’s live in harmony to build a better Malaysia.

PETALING JAYA: MBO Cinemas, the third largest cinema chain operator in the country, is facing liquidation due to cash flow problems stemming from the movement control order (MCO) that has been in place since March due to the Covid-19 pandemic, The Edge reported.
The MCO, enforced on March 18, followed by variations of movement restrictions nationwide will remain until the end of the year with most states in the recovery MCO (RMCO) mode. Several states have now reinstated the conditional MCO (CMCO) following a surge in Covid-19 cases.

PETALING JAYA: Grassroots leaders of PPBM are worried that the coalition government led by their party may collapse.
They feel the PPBM leadership should give in to some of Umno’s demands, including the deputy prime minister’s post, to preserve the government.
This comes as Umno considers retracting support for Perikatan Nasional if its demands are not met.
Three grassroots leaders FMT spoke to said after the falling-out with Umno in Sabah, PPBM leaders needed to give in to Umno to save the coalition.

Lead poisoning is particularly pervasive in poorer countries, affecting one in three children worldwide. The powerful neurotoxin has been linked to lower IQs and increased crime rates.
Lead poisoning is one of the most easily preventable environmental health hazards, yet it remains a major threat to the well-being of babies and children around the world.
As little as five micrograms of lead per decilitre of blood can have a profound impact on children. Those under the age of six are particularly susceptible. About 800 million children have high levels of lead in their blood, according to a study released in July by Unicef and Pure Earth.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 15 — Umno’s announced review of its support for Perikatan Nasional (PN) required the party’s ministers to declare if they still supported the coalition, Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said.
The Johor Umno deputy chairman and former deputy home minister said it was not tenable for the party’s leaders to still be part of a government that the party did not fully support.
On Tuesday, Umno secretary-general Datuk Ahmad Maslan announced that the party would reconsider its continued support to Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s PN coalition.
