Don’t preach about Keluarga Malaysia only when in govt, says Khalid |

KUALA LUMPUR: The “Keluarga Malaysia” concept – espoused by the current administration – is good, but should not just be practised when one is in government, Khalid Samad (PH-Shah Alam) said today.
“But when one becomes the opposition, you fan racial sentiments instead,” the Amanah vice-president said in hitting out at the parties in the current administration during the debate on Budget 2022.
He also expressed regret that the death of fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim had been politicised, with the PH government being accused of failing to protect the Malays and defending the non-Malays.
The coalition, he added, had also been accused of being controlled by non-Malays and non-Muslims.
The then opposition, he said, was prepared to manipulate a tragedy for their political interests only because “the victim was Malay”.

China has massively upgraded its military in recent years, and its capability and intentions are increasingly concerning to the United States as tensions rise over the South China Sea, Taiwan and military supremacy in the Indo-Pacific.

Maxar identified the location as Ruoqiang, a Taklamakan Desert county in the northwestern Xinjiang region.

China’s property market debt could weigh on the country for years, economist George Magnus warns - Hong Kong-listed shares of Chinese real estate developer Kaisa Group Holdings were halted on Friday after news that it had missed a payment on a wealth management product.
- A research paper by renowned Harvard Professor of Public Policy and Economics Kenneth Rogoff and IMF Economist Yuanchen Yang estimated that the real estate sector accounts for around 29% of China’s GDP.
- “If 29% of GDP just marks time, let alone declines, for the next 10 years ... you will know all about it,” George Magnus, economist and research associate at the China Centre at Oxford University, said.
The debt problems facing China’s property sector are likely to cause a period of stagnation which affects both the domestic and global economy, according to George Magnus, economist and research associate at the China Centre at Oxford University.
Hong Kong-listed shares of Chinese real estate developer Kaisa Group Holdings were halted on Friday after news that it had missed a payment on a wealth management product. This came on the back of the protracted saga involving debt-ridden developer China Evergrande Group.
Of the challenges facing the world’s second-largest economy in the coming years, Magnus argued that debt — relating to the property sector in particular — could be the most problematic.

See the big picture, DAP tells supporters over nomination of ex-Umno men |

PETALING JAYA: While DAP disagrees with the nomination of two former Umno men by Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the Melaka polls, the party still recognises the need to “see the big picture” to help reclaim the state it won in 2018.
In a press conference at the Melaka DAP headquarters today, organising secretary Loke Siew Fook said that the party had expressed its opposition to accepting former chief minister Idris Haron and former Pantai Kundor assemblyman Nor Azman Hassan into PH, but had been voted down by its Pakatan Harapan (PH) allies, PKR and Amanah.
“We have not changed our position, we still don’t agree with the two nominations,” he told the media.
“Some of our supporters have stated their unhappiness, but we have to explain to them that while DAP’s position has been made clear, we cannot just base our voting considerations on these two (nominations).
“What is at stake is that if they (DAP supporters) don’t come out to vote, or they do not vote for PH, it will cause PH not to have the opportunity to regain our mandate in Melaka.

Singapore will breach international law if mentally disabled Malaysian’s execution proceeds: rights group
KUALA LUMPUR – Singapore will be disregarding international law if it proceeds with executing the mentally disabled Malaysian Nagaenthran Dhamalingam who is convicted of drug trafficking, a rights group said.
The Anti-Death Penalty Asia Network (Adpan) said this was because international law expressly forbids the execution of any individual with mental or intellectual disabilities.
In a statement, Adpan executive coordinator Dobby Chew pointed to Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s remark in May, in which he pledged the protection of vulnerable groups as a key priority for the government.
“Nagaenthran’s execution will be in flagrant disregard of international law,” Chew said.
“Singapore’s obligation under the Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities suggests that the prime minister’s commitment to the vulnerable community does not extend to all.”
The statement came after Adpan submitted a memorandum to the Singapore Embassy in Kuala Lumpur calling for Nagaenthran’s scheduled execution to be halted and commuted.

Aid resumption to Afghanistan unlikely: World Bank |

WASHINGTON – World Bank president David Malpass indicated yesterday that the institution is unlikely to resume direct aid to Afghanistan, after suspending financing at the end of August when the Taliban seized power.
“I would not envision us operating inside given the full breakdown” of the economy, he said in a conversation at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies.
“One of the challenges is the payment system,” he said, noting that “there’s not the ability to have money actually flow, given what the current government is doing.”
The Washington-based development lender paused aid in August amid concerns about the security situation and women’s rights following the Taliban’s swift takeover of the country, saying it is “closely monitoring and assessing the situation”.

KOTA KINABALU – If coffee was your cultural drink, would you not be offended if someone compared it to urine?
This was the question posed by Sabah-based think tank Wisdom Foundation chairman Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau when he was asked about the negative remarks recently made during the climax of the “Timah” controversy.
During a webinar hosted by Wisdom titled “Alcohol and Borneo Sensitivity” last Saturday, Tangau, as one of the panellists, said alcoholic beverages are part of the culture and custom in Sabah and Sarawak.
“In Sabah, it has become a tradition, a custom for a group of people – villagers, family or friends – to eat and drink together after an activity such as a gotong-royong. This does not mean that we in Borneo are alcoholics.
“We also have alcoholic drinks, like lihing, montoku, bahar, tuak, langkau, that are part of our indigenous cultural heritage.

PETALING JAYA: A seafood restaurant in Langkawi has been slapped with a notice from the authorities over a customer’s complaint of being charged RM1,196.80 for a dish of ‘siakap’ (sea bass).
The action comes after a customer’s online rant about the bill, allegedly an eye-watering RM1,759.50, for a meal for seven people. The bill was said to have included RM1,196.80 for the fish weighing 7.48kg.
The customer said he was shocked when he saw the bill. However, the restaurant owner said she informed the customer about the price of RM16 per 100gm for the fish.
Harian Metro reported today that the domestic trade and consumer affairs ministry has issued a notice to the restaurant under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act. The restaurant has five days to respond.

Book review: Nazir Razak’s candid look at dad, career and country – P. Gunasegaram |

WRITING a book linking the work of your father to your own values and career and what you think the future path your country should take is a rather tall order, especially when your father is one of the nation’s founding fathers, its first deputy prime minister and its second prime minister. And when you were a mere nine years old when your dad died.
Well, that’s exactly what Datuk Seri Nazir Razak, a well-known corporate icon in Malaysia and the youngest son of Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, has succeeded in doing with his book, What’s In a Name, which is available for sale at bookshops today at RM89.95.
It’s a bold, brave and, most of all, admirable effort considering the pitfalls and potholes such a path would come with, and the amount of disagreement and controversy that such an undertaking would generate even in the best of times due to its complexity.
