Najib sues Thomas, govt over ‘malicious prosecution’
Posted by: superadmin - 10-26-2021, 06:14 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR: Najib Razak has filed a lawsuit against former attorney-general Tommy Thomas and the government for alleged misfeasance in public office by pressing 1MDB related charges against him.

The former prime minister claimed that the charges filed against him during Thomas’ tenure were “part of a long-planned, premeditated exercise”.

“This was also in line with the then (Pakatan Harapan) government’s plan.

“As an AG, he (Thomas) carried out his duties, at least in relation to the plaintiff (Najib), as if he was a ‘PH agent’,” Najib said in his statement of claim sighted by FMT. The suit was filed earlier this week.

Signs of first planet found outside our galaxy
Posted by: superadmin - 10-26-2021, 01:49 PM - Forum: Astronomy - No Replies

Astronomers have found hints of what could be the first planet ever to be discovered outside our galaxy.

Nearly 5,000 "exoplanets" - worlds orbiting stars beyond our Sun - have been found so far, but all of these have been located within the Milky Way galaxy.

The possible planet signal discovered by Nasa's Chandra X-Ray Telescope is in the Messier 51 galaxy.

This is located some 28 million light-years away from the Milky Way.

This new result is based on transits, where the passage of a planet in front of a star blocks some of the star's light and yields a characteristic dip in brightness that can be detected by telescopes.

This general technique has already been used to find thousands of exoplanets.

China needs more coal but it’s not likely to turn to Australia for supply

China needs more coal to avert a power crisis — but it’s not likely to turn to Australia for supply
  • China is facing its worst power crisis in years due to a coal shortage.
  • Australia has the coal Beijing needs, but the world’s second-largest economy is unlikely to reverse an unofficial ban on Australian coal imports anytime soon, analysts told CNBC.
  • China stopped buying coal from Australia late last year, after Canberra backed a call for an international inquiry on how Beijing handled the Covid-19 outbreak.

China is facing its worst power crisis in years due to a coal shortage. While Australia has the coal Beijing needs, the world’s second-largest economy is unlikely to reverse an unofficial ban on Australian coal imports anytime soon, analysts told CNBC.

That’s despite recent media reports suggesting that China is releasing small quantities of Australian coal that was stuck at Chinese ports for months due to the ban.

“Reports that small quantities of Australian coal were allowed to clear customs in China have increased speculation that Chinese authorities will look to relax the import ban on Australian coal,” Vivek Dhar, mining and energy commodities analyst at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, told CNBC.

“We don’t think Chinese authorities will relax China’s ban on Australian coal this winter,” he said.

Late last year, China stopped buying Australian coal. That happened as trade tensions between the two countries soared after Canberra backed a call for an international inquiry into Beijing’s handling of the Covid-19 outbreak.

Before that, Australia was a major coal supplier to China — in 2019, some 38% of Chinese thermal coal imports came from Australia.

Tesla hits $1 trillion market cap for the first time

Tesla hits $1 trillion market cap for the first time after Hertz says it will buy 100,000 electric vehicles
  • Tesla hit a $1 trillion market cap for the first time after Hertz said Monday it would buy 100,000 electric vehicles.
  • News of the deal brought Tesla’s stock to a new record high just one trading day after the shares topped $900.
  • The deal comes more than a year after Hertz filed for bankruptcy protection during the height of the coronavirus pandemic, as demand for travel and rental vehicles dropped.

Tesla hit a $1 trillion market cap on Monday following news that Hertz is ordering 100,000 vehicles to build out its electric vehicle rental fleet by the end of 2022.

The company joins trillion-dollar market cap companies like Apple, Amazon and Microsoft.

News of the deal brought Tesla’s stock to more than $1,045 a share midday, a new record high one trading day after the shares broke $900. The stock closed up 12.66% at about $1,024 a share.

Strong EU sales and bullish analyst calls further boosted Tesla’s stock price. Morgan Stanley’s Adam Jonas raised his price target on Tesla to $1,200 a share from $900 on Sunday.
Jato Dynamics said Monday that Tesla’s Model 3 electric sedan became the first fully electric vehicle to top new car sales overall in Europe in September.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk celebrated the milestone on Twitter a minute before market close.

Noeleen Heyzer, wife of late Fan Yew Teng, is new UN envoy for Myanmar
Posted by: superadmin - 10-26-2021, 11:29 AM - Forum: Inspiring Stories - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – Noeleen Heyzer, widow of prominent Malaysian rights activist Fan Yew Teng, has been appointed as UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres’ special envoy on Myanmar. She succeeds Christine Schraner Burgener of Switzerland.

Considered to be one of the highest-ranking Singaporeans in the United Nations, Heyzer has undertaken extensive missions to conflict-affected countries around the world, engaging women and a wide range of stakeholders, including civil society, youth and faith-based organisations.

She was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005 for her work to improve the lives of women, and promoting peace and justice.

Her latest appointment as envoy was announced by Guterres yesterday.

Her late husband Fan had in his lifetime served as acting secretary-general of DAP, and also been MP twice – for Kampar and Menglembu. He had also served as Petaling Jaya assemblyman.

Fan, who passed away in 2010, had written several books on human rights and politics in Malaysia, and had also for some time been an editor for DAP journal The Rocket.

China’s inclusion in CPTPP may give Asean shot in arm
Posted by: superadmin - 10-26-2021, 11:25 AM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – When Beijing filed its formal application to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) recently, the world reverberated by the move that could reshape regional trade.

Malaysia and Singapore, as members of the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), announced that they are “looking forward to welcoming” the interest.

The world has been speculating on how such an inclusion would bring mutual benefits to the regional bloc – Nikkei Asia reported that negotiations with China could start in 2022 at the earliest.

Pundits, however, have different perspectives that, among others, envisage Asean to gain a lot more from the concurrent inclusion of China in CPTPP as well as in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).

During the 38th and 39th Asean Summits and related summits scheduled from October 26 to 28, 2021, the issue of China’s inclusion is expected to be the subject of frequent discussion.

Former Deputy Secretary-General for the Asean Economic Community (AEC) Dr Aladdin D. Rillo said the new bid is definitely positive and impacts favourably on Asean.

Both CPTPP and RCEP are two important trade agreements that will widen trade liberalisation through their significant provisions on market access and promotion of private investment due to regulatory reforms, he said.

Union rejects Amanah call for restrictions on Muslims in alcohol sale
Posted by: superadmin - 10-26-2021, 11:12 AM - Forum: Stop Racism and Religious Bigotry - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: A proposal for a “liquor policy” to restrict the involvement of Muslims in the manufacturing or sale of alcoholic drinks has been rejected by the union representing hotel, bar and restaurant workers.

The union’s secretary-general, Rosli Affandi, said the majority of the people in the food industry were Malays, and the introduction of a new “liquor policy” would affect their livelihoods.

“I totally disagree with any such policy. Businesses will be affected as Muslims will not be able to work at places serving alcohol. At present, they are just doing their jobs and not consuming any alcohol.

“Also, with the current Covid-19 situation, a lot of people from the B40 low-income group are already struggling to find a decent living. On top of that, every industry is struggling to build up their finances. This policy is definitely not a good idea for the economy or workers,” he told FMT.

Melaka polls will lead to new Covid-19 surge, says think tank
Posted by: superadmin - 10-26-2021, 11:04 AM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: fmt-rantau-rakyat-ceramah-ph-12419-1234567.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: There will be a surge in new Covid-19 positive cases because of the Melaka state election, says the head of a health think tank.

Azrul Mohd Khalib, chief executive of Galen Centre for Health and Social Policy, said it was most likely that there would be “breakthrough cases” in which the majority would be those already vaccinated.

“This will definitely happen. What we are concerned about are the number of people needing hospitalisation due to severe illness, and dying as a result,” he told FMT in response to a government ban on political and social gatherings for the election campaign.

Azrul said election rallies and gatherings would still go ahead despite warnings, and SOPs would be “selectively observed or ignored altogether” as politicians would want to be seen shaking hands, speaking without masks, and glad-handing supporters.

Wrong to think battle for votes in Melaka won’t affect Putrajaya, says Ramasamy
Posted by: superadmin - 10-26-2021, 10:57 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: A DAP leader has disagreed with an analyst that the electoral feud between Umno and Bersatu at the Melaka state election next month would not affect the federal government.

Reacting to the opinion of Oh Ei Sun, of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs, that the memorandum of understanding between the prime minister and Pakatan Harapan (PH) will protect the federal government from the electoral feud, Penang deputy chief minister P Ramasamy said the MoU was not meant to strengthen the government.

Ramasamy described the assumption that the contest in the state might not affect relations at the federal level as “naive” and “simplistic”.

“The ties between Bersatu and Umno have been considerably strained over the last few months. The Melaka state election might just be the barometer the parties need in preparation for the general election next year,” he said in a Facebook post.

Oh had said it would be “business as usual” in Putrajaya even if Bersatu and Umno were to go their own way and clash in the state election.

Better a clean multiracial govt than a corrupt Malay-Muslim one, says Idris
Posted by: superadmin - 10-26-2021, 10:37 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

MELAKA: Former Melaka chief minister Idris Haron says the state would be better off under a multiracial and clean administration rather than a Malay-Muslim state government that was corrupt and incompetent.

In an interview with FMT, the former Sungai Udang assemblyman noted that the previous Barisan Nasional-led government had been touted as the first Malay-Muslim state government in Melaka.

“Yes, they’re Malay and Muslim, but what choice do we have?” he said.

“On the one hand, a government that claims to be Malay-Muslim but is rotten, corrupted, incompetent, (subject to external) interventions, which discriminates, among other traits.

“On the other hand, a government of various backgrounds which possesses racial unity, that is more Islamic and capable of ensuring the welfare of the people of Melaka.”
